1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

First doll w/ or w/o a face-up?

Feb 11, 2011

    1. I will get my first doll without a faceup and send her off to an Artist in a few weeks or so after receiving. I wouldn't even dare to try it myself, since I'm very perfectionistic. =S

    2. Getting mine with a faceup because I love the default faceup she has, and...there's no way I feel brave enough to attempt my own. I'm not confident mailing anything out from here either, especially with how much it costs and the fact that I'm not 100% how to send stuff tracked/insured X_X.

    3. I buy them WITH the company faceup, because I know I can always hire someone to remove it and paint a new face. All my dolls but one have factory face ups and I'm happy with them, but I am anxious to get new faces!

    4. I'm getting my first doll with a faceup.

I really wish I could have gotten on here a sooner so i could get into the market place and get my roommate at 2nd hand head she could practice on. my roommate is an artist and I really think she could do well with faceups. She just needs the right tools and practice.

I have no artistic talent so even if I didn't get my doll with a faceup, I will always get someone to do it for me.

    5. I bought my first doll with a faceup.

It is only something like 6 yrs into the hobby that I am realizing that I want to do my own faceups because faceups often are why I don't bond with dolls.

    6. I got my first doll without a face-up upon request (as there was a promotion at the time) and order an extra head with the same face for practice. I read hundreds and hundred different blogs and watched tons of videos and launched myself into doing face-ups. And while I still have oodles and oodles left to learn and am often quite envious of the beautiful professional face-ups, I'm pretty happy with the results and can rest knowing my dolls are completely unique ^^

    7. I got my first little lady with her face-up, and even then I had her modified to have elf ears and a tattoo on her cheek.
But I think I'd have to be a tad more confident in my art skills to do my own. It would certainly save on cost though!

    8. I ordered my first doll, a Dika Ling yue, with the official face up, but after two-three monthes, I started to be a bit tired of it, as it looked a bit too neutral, so I remove it and I made a wreckles style face up.
But I watched a lot of tutorials before starting, I was very stressed ...

    9. My first one is going to be without make up because I've seen a very good artist whose make ups are really beautiful, and fit perfectly with the style I want for my girl.

    10. I got my first doll without a face up. I had already tried my hand at giving face-ups to Offtopic dolls, so I knew I could do it, although my first attempt turned out horribly. I wiped the face and tried again and I'm very happy with how it turned out, and I certainly agree it helps with doll bonding. After my horrid first attempt I was considering ordering a different head sculpt for my doll, but now I have fallen in love with the sculpt.

My partner order her doll with a face-up with the intention of me wiping all but the eyebrows because I'm not very good at eyebrows. It worked out great and I'm definitely going to consider modifying factory face-ups in the future.

    11. I got my first doll with the company face up. My parter can do faceups but I liked the way the company's looked.

    12. My first doll was with a firm make-up. And some more following. But now I do a make-up by myself.

    13. I got my first doll with a faceup but no body blushing; I really wish I had opted for body blushing, but I was told it wasn't necessary.... Anyway, my boy is coming completely blank because I'm having him customized. :)

    14. I got my first doll blank and I intend to continue buying them like that ;).

When it comes to being new to the BJD hobby I feel that's up to each BJD owner to chose. If you are determined to do it on your own, then I feel it's not a problem even for the first doll, but if you prefer to let someone else do it for you then that's great too :).

    15. The first one I ordered, was without faceup. The second One I purchased from a shop where it was in stock had a default faceup. So I received my first doll with faceup. If I have the choice I would always buy without.

    16. My first BJD came with a default face-up, because that seemed to be the most convenient option. I wasn't a fan of it, so I wiped it up and painted a new one myself. I got tired of that look quickly, so it didn't stay for long... I decided to paint a new one, and it looked more natural, so I left it for some time.
...Until I got tired of it again, and commissioned a face-up.
And then I got tired of it, too. :|But it stayed, anyway.

I don't think people who are new to BJDs should necessarily pay for a face-up. It will all depend on the person, their abilities, what are their plans for the doll, etc. ...

    17. The first doll I ordered did not have a face-up, but the first doll that arrived to me did. Her face-up is beautiful and even though I didn't commission it she still feels like my doll. I think it just depends on what the person feels comfortable with. Now, I prefer commissioning someone who has more talent than myself, but I hope to improve my skills and do my own face-ups down the road.

    18. My first doll came with a default makeup~ (which I cannot choose I want it or not.) But soon I change it to what she is like now, making her looks much cuter!

    19. I got my first head with a face-up because he was my dream doll and I really liked the face-up he had. If his face-up had been of "meh" quality, I would have bought him blank and commissioned a face-up.

    20. I bought my first doll with face-up. I need to see face with face-up so I can imagine various different possibility to face. My dolls face up came with doll so I didn´t need to put more money to doll. Face up was ok, so win win ^^
