1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

First doll w/ or w/o a face-up?

Feb 11, 2011

    1. I would personally go with faceup at least until you can figure out how to do faceups or afford a faceup :) that's been my experience anyway

    2. My first doll came to me blank :) Few reasons why... I was a student so technically... poor lol So it was a matter of it was cheaper ^^ Secondly, I am a creative person... I can draw and paint ok, so I was thinking 'how hard can it be?' Thirdly, the reason I'm so smitten by BJDs is that they are imensly customisable, I wanted my first doll to be special and as close to my own as possible :) And finally, the default faceup wasn't what I was after, not even close.
Do I regret haveing a blank doll first..? No I dont :) Especially now that I don't think I could do a faceup well anymore, as my hands dont listen to me since I got diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I have done Aeryn's faceup about 5 times. I am happy with it now :) And wouldn't change it <3
I dont think its nessesary a must for a newbie to get thier first doll with a company faceup, they could easy try themselves or pay someone else to do it. Or if they have a friend that does faceups like I do, they can ask thier friend ^^I dont think anyone should be restricted to the company faceup for thier first doll if they dont want it, however, I think not getting a faceup because you cant afford it is silly... you saved for the doll presumedly, wont take much longer to save for the faceup too surly..? :)

    3. I bought my first doll with faceup - I have since bought a couple with no faceup and done it myself, but very dissatisfied with looking at my efforts compared to the factory faceups on my other dolls, I no longer buy blank dolls - only with faceup, as I know I won't be happy with them otherwise. If I wanted to LEARN to do faceups the last thing I'd do is buy an expensive doll to practise on - especially if it was limited or discontinued sculpt - I would get a practice head or 3 and practice on those before doing a doll I really valued. Even Monster High dolls make better practise heads than nothing - the techniques and materials are the same as on a resin doll (well according to youtube vids I've seen by nicolledreams)

I agree with Mushroom that it's not a good economy to save $40 or so on a faceup if you LIKE the company faceup - it's worth the extra in my opinion!

    4. I got my first without face-up, but he is so cute to me. At that time I didn't know how to order face-up of do face-up.
So my first doll was with me very long time without face-up. :)

    5. My first BJD had a faceup.
I find it difficult to bond with a doll without a faceup. And I was really eager to get into the hobby so not being able to bond would have greatly frustrated me.

    6. Bluefairy dolls: with face-up
      other: without face-up
depends on what characteristic you want them to be

    7. I got my one without a faceup becouse the default one just didn't match the character I planned. Now he (my doll) is still without a faceup, so... maybe it was not a really good idea, but I still don't refret at all as planning to go to the faceup-master as soon as possible

    8. First doll came with a face-up, as will the next two. However, I do have a blank doll on order and will try doing the face-up myself.

    9. My first two came with company faceups, and I actually don't think I could have done a better job. I think I'm ready to try now though, and since I'm kind of attached to my two girls' current faces, my next (if I get the one I'm thinking of getting) may come blank.

Given my own experience, I think getting a faceup on a first doll is best if you're unsure at all. Otherwise, by all means, go for it blank. :>

    10. I got my first doll with the face-up since I really liked the default company one. I'm pretty artistic and I feel like I can do it with little practice, but I would rather do it on a practice head then my actual doll to start off with. I wanted to enjoy my doll from the moment I open her instead of staring at a blank face, knowing I would have to do it.
But as for others they can do what they like. I think it is wonderful if people want to do their own face-up on their first doll. I admire that.
But I completely understand getting the company face up too.

    11. I liked the company face-up so I ordered it for my first doll and I felt like I wanted him to be 'complete' when I opened him up, especially since I'm not good at face-ups and have never done one before. It also would have been a pain to have to send off his head for a face-up if I didn't get the company one which would mean more time away from him. In the future, I think I will probably commission someone for a face-up or even try myself but not for my first.

    12. I got my first doll with a face-up, a bit like why I also ordered her with the default outfit and wig, I wanted her to have at least something and look pretty while I sorted her actual look out. Though I still haven't got round to that, so if I brought her blank she probably would still be bare-faced :sweat Plus Bluefairy face-ups are really cute.

    13. I got my first doll with a face-up. Honestly, I was too scared to send him in. Our second doll Jun is coming with a face up and body blushing from Luts. I guess, since we like them, there's no point in paying someone else to do them just yet? I have an event head without a face up and I think that's going to be the first one I get done by someone else. c :

    14. I personally think if you confident Enough to do a face up then you should(first doll or not),i see nothing wrong with getting a doll with a face up as long as you are happy with it!

    15. I ordered my dolls with face-ups because I've never done a face-up before and I really wanted to make sure I bond with them when they arrive.
However, I do plan to learn to do face-ups on my own. I'm getting an event head, but I'm not sure if it would be ok to use it for practice. I don't want to risk some kind of newbie damage to it.

    16. I prefer buying a doll with face up.

    17. If it's a first doll then it definitely has to have his own face-up for me xD
Mainly because in addition to the already long waiting time, you'll have to wait for the faceup artist to finish too ?
And lots of newbies like me don't know much about the face-up artists around as well, so stock face-up it is ! xD
I tend to choose a custom for my second ones though :3

    18. I ordered my first Doll with face up for the reason I don't know about face up, maybe I am bad in doing it myself so I will maybe buy one day a extra head and try on it to make face ups. but my first doll will keep the face up for a while maybe even forever ;)

    19. I got my first doll without it. One part because I wasn't thrilled about the company face up, and another because I just adored the idea of trying out face ups for myself. I am really glad I did though, because it's not my favorite part of the hobby! :)

    20. I got her with one. It let me get a handle on things before I sent her off for a real one a few months later. It was a cheap one as far as company face-ups go though so I didn't feel like I was blowing money.
