First face ups...what did your first face up look like?

Jun 24, 2015

    1. my doll is currently wearing my first face up. I don't think it's completely awful but i certainly don't like it at all.... I just waiting to get some remover before I can try and redo it.

I'll post a better image showing the eyebrows later.

    2. My first faceups were awful XD I thought since I could draw and paint it would be easy but nope! All that meant was that I was skilled enough at art to see the glaring suckiness of my attempts.

    3. My first faceup was awful and smudgy. I wiped it after a week I was so embarrassed. I redid it and it's still not that great, he's got this permanently surprised look on his face. I have to redo it soon so I can take him to meetups and stuff.

    4. My first face-up was ok, not great but it's all part of the fun, well for me anyway :) I have persisted though and I am definitely seeing an improvement :D

    5. My first face up was a disaster! :...( I still remembered how my Migidoll's vampire Miho looked like back then. I totally ruined his handsome face. That's why I always order default face up from company or send them to a face up artist.

    6. I thought my first faceup went rather well considering it was my first... I'd looked at videos and read up on the what's, why's, and how's here on DoA. My first doll has a tiny little head, so I had a lot of trouble getting the eyelashes in there, they ended up very squished and ...wiry... :XD:

It's all about practise, and I guess some people are just more talented with faceups than others, but nothing you can't learn through hard work, you know? I'm lazy, I haven't done nearly enough faceups yet....

Here it is, the first :wiggle oh..and let's just say that my photography skills could use a brush up as well....

    7. My first faceup was very very very bad. An awful disaster in green
Second and third weren't exactely better, but well... I tried and tried again and now my faceup are very acceptable! :dance

    8. My first faceup turned out pretty decent, but that's because my first doll had a highly detailed, super- realistic sculpt (Elfdoll Rita). The details of her actual face did a lot of the work for me. I learned upon continuing to do more faceups on different types of dolls that it's not nearly as easy to paint a sculpt that has less detail and relies more on your painting to flesh it out. The more realistic ones are definitely easier!

    9. Jono was my second doll ever and the first one I ever faceuped. He's covered in scars from his lower face down to his chest.

    10. Wow. He's so lifelike and amazing looking!

My first face up wasn't great, and I don't think my second was much better. (There was some improvement though.)
I have pictures of both face-ups on my tumblr. http://ijtet822.tumblr.com/

    11. He is gorgeous right now! Can I ask his sculpt?

    12. I'm still partway through my first faceup, you can see it here: http://nyxypixie.tumblr.com/image/123731987912
I'm fairly pleased with it so far but I can tell my eyelashes aren't quite symmetrical and halfway through the pastels it looked awful with all the bright colours! I've painted cloth doll faces many, many times but am unused to the hard surface, dimensions and pastels.

    13. Ugh. Super thick eyebrows that were way off symmetrically and the blushing was so horribly done, it looked like I had rolled the doll head in dirt. I never thought it was "okay" back then either--I knew it was BAD. Yeah...definitely learned a lot on what NOT to do on a faceup. I've improved somewhat but I don't think this is something I can ever get the hang of. It's bad enough having shakey hands and attempting to paint fine straight lines. :(

    14. I think this is awesome! It's so interesting and creative! :)

    15. Mine was bad... However, I'm extremely thankful for the wonderful people I met at a convention about a month after I got my first. Everyone was very encouraging and nice and made me confident enough to continue. Practice makes perfect. ^^ I wiped him a lot in the first months he was home.

    16. Hmm let's see. Mine was not too long ago actually.

    17. My first faceup was just awful. So bad that I almost gave up doing faceups. I went overboard with the purple eyeshadow and the bottom eyelashes were messy and long. Her eyebrows were so far up her forehead that she had a constant look of shock on her face lol. Thankfully, I kept practicing and my girls look decent now.

    18. I don't think my first faceup was as bad as it could have been. With that said, it... Wasn't really that good, either. I was really impatient and instead of layering it properly, I tried to get everything done in three or four layers! As a result, nothing really went on as well as it should have. Everybody has to start somewhere though..?:sweat

    19. Very pink, if I recall correctly. Poor guy looked under the weather thanks to my heavy-handed blushing. I managed to avoid total goop-brows, but it wasn't amazing or anything. Also I used Testors to seal so it made him banana-y in short order :P Lessons were learned, that's for sure.
