Floating heads - How do you treat it when it's JUST a head?

I am a newbie, hadn't even heard of BJD's till two and a half months ago. Ordered Mei, to sew for more than anything I only have two little sons, and no daughter to sew for :P And also because she looks so sweet and I think she'll be so beautiful....

And then I stumbled across Dikadolls' Zura. This is rather embarrassing , but I had enjoyed the artist Gackt's work for years and now here he was, for me in any case, the aura of him, dollified.
Very bizarre to see him thus, suddenly. I tried to forget him but could not. That head started to haunt me like Gackt used to ...
And I caved. And bought the head. Because I could not spare the money nor justify the whole doll. At least not at this time. The guilt was manageable this way, buying "just" the head.

But now I started saving for his body.
I am crazy. And embarrassed. but also very excited :

 

My first doll was a head.... I thought getting a practice head would help me practise stuff I had never done before and get ready for a full one, but in the end he his now beside me on his lovely body xD

I didnt think I would like having heads rolling around... but it is such an easier way to get a doll without paying it all! XD

Now I have one sleeping head that I do not know what I will do with.... And a Crobidoll Thor head that is waiting for everyone to arrive home so I can start saving for her body xD

I will also get another head, the Soon Ai's OE head that I also do not know what I will do with xD

And while my sister would have loved getting a full doll.... I got her a head to start so she is also trying to get a body xD

Go Floating heads! But I wish they all had bodies though... I just dont want to keep them like that or sell them xP

Yes, I admit several - B&G Aurora, DIM Achernar, LTF Piki, LTF El, AoD Wan-Wan, Obitsu Gretel and MNF Ruth

What's their story... how did you come to acquire them?
B&G Aurora - On split with a friend, I dislike the B&G female body a lot.
DIM Achernar - Offered for sale on its own, I decided to get it, do not like the DIM body either.
LTF Piki - I want a dreaming Piki, so just grabbed the faceplate to get a body later
LTF El - Impulse buy at a doll meet ^^;
AoD Wan-Wan - Free event head when I purchased my Ai-Ai, was on a Soom body for a while but will be going to go onto a proper AoD body.
Obitsu Gretel - Impulse buy from a group order, shares with my Haruka for now ^^;
MNF Ruth - Had a body for a year and a half, got sick of the absolutely ghastly posing abilities of the MNF bodies, sold it.

Sure the aren't 'real'...but do you ever feel bad that they aren't 'complete' anyway?
I'm not a fan of having floating heads, I wish they were complete indeed. I'm trying to locate bodies for them all, easier said than done when you don't like the original bodies and the replacements you know best of (MNF A-line and RS 60cm) are eye-burningly ugly to look at.

Do you plan to get them their own body one of these days?
I've just finished paying for a body for one of my floating heads, so I am slowly getting there. Of course I would love to get them their bodies

Oh, and I forgot to point out earlier - I have a floating body too, reserved for a different head that has yet to arrive. Its just as creepy

 

hmmm, i only have one! an Old F-08 that is currently out for faceup. She was available only as a head and for a VERY good price so i snatched her up ... i don't have plans to get her a body since i really have ZERO room for another SD doll, i'm not sure where i'm going to keep her head when she isn't stealing someone's body either. I'm generally not a fan of spare heads since i feel so sorry for them just laying around ... I was thinking of making a cloth body for her maybe once she arrives back home actually.

 

I've got two boys who are floating heads at the moment, and I intend to buy them bodies as soon as I can. I don't like to have heads that are permanently bodiless because that annoys me, but often I'll see just a head for sale and need to get it, and the body will come later. My current floating heads can easily share bodies with my other boys though, so it's not that hard to switch them out if I want to play with them. ^^

However, my very first floating head, several years ago, was a K-doll Kian. He would sometimes borrow bodies, and when I finally got him a body that matched his resin (the old normal skin K-dolls matched Volks oldskin) I didn't much like the body. :\ I ended up selling it, and then a little later sold him, because I couldn't find a permanent body for him that I liked.

 

Just to throw it out there, does anybody have any headless bodies? I'm planning on buying the body of the doll I want off the marketplace now and then getting the head later. Is that even weirder than floating heads?? D:

 

I have several floating heads. I have them because: 1) they were about to be discontinued and I really wanted a complete doll, but couldn't afford a complete one at the time, 2) I got a head I wanted at a very good price, 3) I absolutely disliked their original body and sold it, but hope to find one I like better. Some of these I've had for a while, but they are not forgotten. As finances allow, I am slowly buying them bodies and bringing them to "life".

Yes I have 3: a Fairyland faceplate Multihead Ante, a MNF Shiwoo Scarface head and a Peakswoods Lady Bee head

I don’t feel bad as I they were not planned purchases but only free gift.
They just sit, well wrapped, in a box at the moment.
Do you plan to get them their own body one of these days?
I plan to get a Pupuki body for the faceplate Multihead and then offer it to my eldest daughter who loves those tiny dolls. It will probably be my next purchase.
I also plan to get a MNF Active line body for my Lady Bee floating head (I already have a Lady Bee elf doll).
Nothing planned for the Shiwoo Scarface head. I will probably sell it.

 

I currently have two. One is a minimee head, and I knew that it would be awhile before I could get him a body, but I didn't want to miss up the chance to get his head. The other I got as a hybrid (a Ninodoll Bada on an SD girl body)--I loved both the head and body, but I ended up wanting to use the head for one of my pre-existing characters who is male. However, I really wanted to move my SD13 Megu head onto a Volks body, so she ended up getting the body. Her old obitsu body went to Lorry's sister Deirdre who is a B&G Sandra head. The Bada head is waiting for a boy body.

I've had other floating heads in the past that have since been completed--one is a minimee, some were heads off the marketplace with really nice faceups, and then a couple were Ninodoll heads (Ninodoll doesn't make bodies). When it comes to finding bodies I often stalk the marketplace, because if you're patient you can get some really good deals on nice bodies. When money is a little short, heads are often much easier to afford than bodies, so heads end up coming home first and then have to wait while I pull the money together for bodies. I did have a Luts cloth body to use as a temp body, but I loaned it to a friend, however, it was more annoying than anything else.

 

I have yet to own a floating head since money is extremely tight and I can barely afford one doll of my own. :P But someday if I ever own a floating head, I would try my best to love him/her as I could... and work extremely hard towards getting them a body!!!

I have...a few. xD Twenty right now, actually, counting the one I am planning on selling...and one more on the way. Most of the ones I have can borrow bodies, but a couple really look bad on the bodies I have. ^^;;;
It was mostly event heads that did me in...and limiteds where I couldn't afford the whole doll at that time so just got the head...and a few second-hand heads from the MP that I couldn't get anywhere else...but really the fact that I have so many for so long rests on the fact that I am trying to make pre-existing characters with most of them, and am very picky about bodies as well as heads--if the 'default' body doesn't suit the character, I will just get the head and search elsewhere for a body...hence the large population of floating Leeke boys in the house. ^^;;;

 

I've got one floating head and I'll probably end up with more in the future... He'll definitely get a body, probably as soon as I discover a decent resin match.

 

Hmm... I have three floating heads. DOD dream head which came with another doll. A Dollshe Rosen who's body I've ordered, And soom Chrom. Chrom I saw on the marketplace, He will be getting a body as soon as I can.
I feel bad for the Rosen head, he has wig eyes and faceup but no body... there is no body for him to share either. I haven't had time to give my Chrom a face-up, wigs, and eyes so he is kinda 'less alive' so it doesn't bug me as much. My DOD head is just a practice head, I really have no plans for him.

My roommate was out of town and it was my first week alone in the apartment -.- I spent a lot of time on DoA and I was lonely. I saw him on the marketplace for pretty cheap and snapped him up as a practice head to cheer me up. Now the problem is I want to more of them!

I do feel bad about Absynthe, but it's not something I can readily fix now. He's such a mr grumpy head though.

Do you plan to get them their own body one of these days?
Hopefully sometime this year. The body I want for him isn't overly expensive, so it shouldn't be hard to get, and I beleive the white skin will be equally as paper white.

 

I have had two heads, and have one on the way.
It seems to be a cycle with me. Buy a full doll, buy a head.
Buy the head a body, then buy another one.
I wanted it to end, but I don't think it ever will.

My first head was an AoD Mo that I found on the marketplace really cheap. It was after I got my first boy and thought it would be nice to have a practice head, since I had ordered my boy with a custom face up and had no one else to practice on really. I just called him MO and let my boy D have his way with him (sitting on him, kicking him around, etcetc), until he started to feel less like a lifeless head and we started to bond. I didn't think it would happen, since the mold is not the most attractive at all, but it did and he got his body over the summer. My first SD.

Second head was not long after MO got his body. I had been wanting a MNF Shiwoo for one of my characters for a while, and was hunting the marketplace. I found plenty of Shiwoos, but no bodies that I liked. So I found a head with pierced ears, since I didn't want to do it myself anyway, and bought it. I ordered his body in a split, which took a few months. Unlike MO, this guy was meant to be a character so I knew what body he was getting and that I was going to get it for a while. The way I got him was just unexpected, haha.

Next doll was a full doll, and I was supposed to take a break until I ordered my tiny in June. But I caved and bought myself a K-Doll Kasis head. Since K-Doll only sells heads, I have no choice but to let him hang around for a while. I definitely plan on getting him a body some day, though it might take a while to find the perfect one and save. I do plan on selling him if I can't though, which would make me sad, but would be for the best. I don't want to have a head floating around forever :<

 

I've recently succumbed to the Chrom charms... now his head proudly floats about the apartment, freaking out the guests. I have a concept for him but it is very involved, so realistically, it might take a while. Still, I can't get enough of his pouty mug.

 

Now, I'll readily admit that I haven't had the best of luck with floating heads. I really got into the minimees for a few months there, looking for realistic heads to turn into my characters, and I bought several of them. But by the time they arrived, I'd discovered that I don't like overly realistic sculpts at all and actually prefer sculpts that are a little more anime instead. So every floating head I'd purchased wound up going straight to the marketplace, and I vowed no more floating heads...EVER! Well, wouldn't you know it, about 6 months later I came across a clockwork modded AoD Rao head in the marketplace. My jaw hit the floor and I fired off an offer to buy so fast, smoke was rising from my keyboard! I couldn't help it, it was mad love at first sight and I couldn't have cared less that she was only a floating head. But I worked very hard at finding her a body right away because I was still haunted by my past floating head failures. Her body arrived just two days after her head and now she's just waiting her turn for me to put her all together, make her clothes and design her very own display space. But I'll tell you what...when I opened that box and saw her head, it was an instant bond right on the spot! I adore her!!!

 

I have a floating Dream of Doll Tender Elf Sha head. I got him as an early valentine's present from my honey for face up practice, but I'm really falling in love with the sculpt and starting to look for bodies already.....

he's my first head so it may just be the "ahhh I need a whole doll already" syndrome....but I plan on getting another dod boy eventually so if I get the body now I'll only have to find another head when the time comes.
