    1. People do it when they want to change the gender of a doll - male head on female body, or female head on male body - or know what head they want but haven't settled on a body that matches their vision yet. Sometimes, the head is only available for a limited time, or in limited quantities, and so they jump on it, but don't have the money to get a body until later. If someone wants to put a head from one company onto a body from another, they almost always - not exclusively, but usually - get the head first. Some people buy their dolls in small purchases - the head, then eyes, then a wig, lastly a body - because they don't have the money to do it all at once, but they don't want to wait long enough to save up a big chunk of cash. Some people get a head because they love it, without any idea of who or what they want it to be, then spend months trying to figure out a name and gender and mold for the body.

There are many, many reasons. The list just goes on.

Personally, I've got two 'heads' at the moment, though one hasn't arrived yet. One was only available as an Artist head, and I was planning to sculpt a custom body for her myself. The other...he cost me just over $600, so there's going to be a bit of a wait on his body while my finances recover. **sheepish**

    2. because breakaway was my first love, but sold out (before count v was released, dammit) so i got my beloved el. and then, when i saw a breakaway head floating around the marketplace, i knew i HAD to get it, or regret it. so i did. next step now, is to give him a face, and save up for a body.

    3. There are few heads laying around my house right now. A couple of them were purchased to be practice face-up heads. The practice heads will share bodies with my other dolls if they ever need to be seen complete. One of the floating heads is Idris' extra dreaming head that's kept so he can have an alternate facial expression, Lex's head is solo right now since Grey stole his body. I hope to find him an SD16 body some day. All of the extra heads live in "Satan's Easter Basket"(a traditonal Easter basket full of shredded grass, plastic eggs and doll heads.)

I purchased both Nathan's and Max's heads before I had bodies for them becasue they were limited releases. In Idris' case, I bought his SD13 Volks body first and bought the El Special months later and gave the CP body to a different floating head. *_* I had to wait to buy Idris' head because El was out of stock for awhile.

The extra practice heads may develop their own story, but I don't intend them to. For now, I play with them, try on different eyes and wigs to see what suits them, etc. I plan on giving them face-ups as soon as my UV Cut Mr. Superclear gets here.:sigh

I like having them, they have so much potential laying around unfinished, like little blank canvases. I've come up with many more interesting ideas peering at them in their little nest than if they'd shown up ready-made and/or complete.

    4. I bought Kai as just a head back in Febuary. He was a snag because i thought i could easily buy him a body and be done with that all XD;; i always wanted a Syo and didn't have enough money laying around to buy one new off the Volks site and didn't trust eBay or others to buy him... was on eBay with a friend or something (i don't remember why i was on there...) and randomly looked up "Syo" and found one pureskin, body-less, makeup-less Syo head for sale and after a long, dramatic wait, i won him. I did not expect him to come home so soon at all. :D

i did give him a face-up, but he didn't wear a wig until he had his first body (the Luts Cloth Male Body) because no wig would stay on him XD

    5. I've always had a head around (two at one point). I bought the heads first, because I already had dolls in the mail and couldn't afford bodies, but didn't want to pass up the chance to snatch my Els off Ebay. I did get one body a few months later and I switch the heads every now and then, though the body, as far as everyone is concerned, is the property of Julius. As for why I still have one floating head and have bought a whole new doll... Sulla would say it's because I'm neglectful. XD Even as a head, he's still got a ton of personality!

    6. Right now, I only have one 'floating head'. I bought the head first because I wanted to do some modifying (opening eyes, sanding, ect) on it. It'll probably be a while until I can actually buy him a body.

    7. I just fell in love with Rasendou's.. figured I would never get one.. the words rare as hens teeth come to mind (and I won't shop on YJ), and then one day, lo and behold.. a rasendou head in the market place - I had my wallet out faster than I could hit the enter key!

Yeah, he's waiting for a body, but I haven't decided what to put him on yet, and I haven't finished fixing the mods that had been started... so it's of secondary importance, but he WILL have a body this year.

My VDES head was purchased as an alternate personality for my DES, so that worked well, saved me money, as they never interacted :> I miss them both.

      Seek peace

    8. My floating head was purchased on a complete whim; the character(Kalinx) that he's turned out to be must have grabbed hold of me for a bit and payed for it because he's a sculpt I never considered for Linx's character. ^^;; I love him to pieces, even though he's just a head, and lucky for him he's got a body on the way as we speak.

I'd buy another disembodied head in a snap too. I love to look at my shelves and see the blank slate for a new doll sitting there waiting for me <-- I'm guilty of both the extra lined notebooks and extra canvases too, so an 'extra' doll head is nothing new to my family. *_*

    9. I'm not really allowed to have floating heads because they bother my roommate. She doesn't even really like it when we take our dolls apart for some reason. I tend to agree with her though on having random people in just head form. It would be...odd.

    10. I have mine because, uh... you can't get a Ciel with a body? I couldn't have afforded a body, anyway, and I thought the head was just a perfect fit for a character I've had in my head a long time (when I first started looking at bjd's and I planned on getting DOD's Too and Bee-A, this character was going to be Bee-A... I still plan on creating the character that would have been Too, also. BUT I DIGRESS.)

I think I would buy lots of dolls as heads first, then bodies if it didn't tend to be a little bit more expensive that way. It just cuts down on the amount of money I have to have ALLATONCE, which is helpful because once I start saving up lots of money my parents take it all for groceries.

I would also buy a head on its own if I didn't like the body it would normally come with or whatever.

I have resolved not to get any heads until Georgette has her body, but it's very tempting... getting a head just feels like getting a brand new doll AND IT'S SO CHEAP, but a body is an expense for a character I already have sitting around, albeit in SEVEREDHEAD format. Of course, if the perfect head came along in the marketplace, or in a limited run... all my promises would go out the window, I'm sure x_x

    11. I had a floating head for a very lengthy time...over a year. I snapped him up because Isao is one of my dream dolls. He had a personality and story well before he was purchased. ^^; I figured--it's a limited head mold, but bodies are easy enough to get a hold of.

I went ahead and got three other dolls while he was still a head on a glue bottle, but after my last full purchase, I made myself get him a body. It might not even be his permanent body, but it's better than a bottle.

But I was asked after I got his body if I'd ever get just a head ever again, and I had to honestly say "Yes, if it was one of a certain few, or if it was one I was wanting for another doll. Even if it wasn't a limited." XD

    12. I'd only buy a floating head if I knew I could find a body for it very easily XD Which generally means only if a company that produces the proper resin match has bodies for sale as option parts. I'd buy a floating Luts head without hesitation, but... I'd be wary of buying a Volks head because I wouldn't know when and where I could buy a body for it, and how much it would cost.

      I can understand buying just the head first, because it's cheaper, and if it's a limited or something, it's more important to snap up the head first than the body. But I probably wouldn't collect more than one or two heads because then I'd have to save for too many bodies, and might miss out on the chance to get another full doll I really like ^^;

The exception to my rule is Scarface/captain Cecil heads XD It's rare to find the head without the body, but if I ever did and had the resources, I'd buy it in a heartbeat no matter how many other heads I had laying around.

Boe just looked so much happier to have a body :'D And even just popping Roo's head off for a moment makes me sad.

    13. well for me it was a really good price and easy she can fit on almost any SD body...so I figured that it would be ok. Besides I'm getting a new body for my SD girl sooo my floating F-08 head can have her old body.

    14. I don't mind having floating heads, or even headless bodies XD So far, I purchased my U-Me head since I'd never seen one before and I was in love (he was my first doll) Well, he got sent off for a face-up in November, and I ended up buying myself a body for him in December for my birthday. Next, I got a BW Breakaway head, again he was limited and I could get him a body later. He doesn't fit on the body I bought, so I have a head that's in the UK, a floating vampire head, and a body that has a chopstick through his neck XD
I plan to get another head soon as well, simply to do her correctly and get her modded up and gorgeous. I prefer having heads first, because if I end up not liking them, it's easier to sell them seperatly.

    15. Luca is about to become a floating head - I knew from the start that she would be for a while, because she needs a small-bust body...

As for personality - well, I know that whenever I take someone's head off for a faceup, they 'go to sleep', so I while I might know more or less who they were...think I'd have a hard time actually interracting/getting to know a floating head. A lot of that's actually because for me, movement/posing is really imoportant in a character's personality.

    16. I get them, because I like them and feel that I wont be able to easily get that head again. Then they sit around until I get them painted or I customize them. But first I need to get a personality for them. Some share a body. SOme I cant find a good body match for . But usually they are sold just as heads. Like my re-che and ciel. Finding everything for them is one of the things I like most about BJDs- finding perfect eyes, bodies, clothes, etc. I like hunting for stuff.

    17. I'm going to be ending up with a floating head, because I need to get the body from a different company. I'm getting a Luts cloth body to use in the meantime, because I don't like having them as just heads--their personalities/spirits/whatever it is that makes them them stay in their heads, and it's weird to have them without bodies.

I'll get plenty of use out of the cloth body, though, since I'm planning on two more hybrid dolls and it takes longer to save for their bodies.

    18. laz is a floating head. I haven't even gotten a quarter of the money for him, but I love having him around, even if, in his quiet way, he gets irritated with me. it provides extra motivation too! He has his personality which has changed minorly since I recieved him. I give him faceups, since I wear his off after a month or so because i handle him too much. I managed to restrain myself for a little while. He came with his eyes, and I haven't gotten a wig, but my mom crochetd him a hat for me. i think i'm going to make him a clothe body if i on't get a job.^^

    19. I have one floating head, Renji. That's mainly because I want to give him a taller and more muscular body than the Luts one he came with.. Waiting to save up the money, and for Latidoll to release the Red bodies.. hehe!

I also co-own a Juri head with a friend, and will be saving up the money to get her a body.. Sometime in the future.. sigh.

    20. I have a floating Vampire Yder head, it has no name and no personality, I keep tossing up making it into a girlie for Dark Bunny's Caleb to have a squeeze, but really I still have it is cos I have the whole Elf Yder and I go through spells of thinking Devin needs a different bod, so I wonder if I want to sell off the whole LTD and replace him with a modded doll, or what.

I also have a Dollmore Ray head on the way, I love the Dollmore head sculpt, and the body is gorgeous except I hate the breasts, so I am gonna put her on a whiteskin CP mature bod. Mind you that is if she ever gets here, right nnow I am hating Canada Post. She has a personality....Brenda Spellbinder nee Richards...yeah, Corpse's wife is gonna show up (any day now I hope)
