For Second Hand Owners - Your stance in changing the doll's name

Dec 21, 2016

    1. None of the owners of my second hand dolls disclosed their original names, even when I asked, so I'd say make him or her your own. I mean, most of the time their wigs, eyes, and even faceups get changed out, so I don't see the harm in rebranding a second hand doll to suit your likes c:

    2. I have never once thought about asking a previous owner if I can change a name! Once I sell a doll I cut ties so I would be super surprised if anyone ever came to me asking if they could change the name! The answer would be, "of course!"

    3. I kept my first second hand dolls name since it really did suit her, but for the second one she never had a name so I'm giving her a nam

I do this because I'm a very sentimental person and I'm friends with the seller of my first second hand doll

    4. It's never crossed my mind to even ask what the doll's name was during their time with the seller. Maybe the seller didn't name the doll because they didn't like the sculpt upon receiving. Maybe they're selling because they didn't like the character they initially created and couldn't come up with a reason to keep it.

Unless it is stated in the listing or correspondence, then the doll becomes yours to do with what you want when you purchase it.

    5. I never even considered asking the previous name. To me, the doll is now a completely different entity, so I just rename. I have even changed names multiple times with some of my own dolls to find the right one.

    6. As most here mentioned, if you buy the doll, it's yours.
All my dolls were second hand, and I haven't heard any of their names. (well aside from sculpt names)
I might have kept names if I heard them and liked them, as then it's like they already have a given name and it belongs to them. But that never happened to me, so I wouldn't be able to tell. I would definitely change it if I hate it though..
My three full dolls are currently named Airi, Ruuki and Mikan, and I have a floating head with a body on its way. He doesn't have a name yet.. It's hard xD

    7. Not only is the doll yours to do with as you please once you buy it, I wouldn't buy from someone who asked that I not change the doll's name. To me, the ideal transaction is quick and polite, and over as soon as all packages have arrived. I don't want further contact with the person I buy from (unless they were someone I knew before or we find out we have something else in common, obviously!) and I wouldn't want them checking up on what I'm doing with the things I bought.

    8. Considering I'm the one buying the doll, for my own character, because I want to-- I will absolutely change the name, and I will absolutely not ask about it. I feel like when buying a doll secondhand, the previous owner gives up everything along with teh doll.

In retrospect, When I sell a secondhand doll, I don't always like sharing the info around the character I once had because it's mine, and I don't want anyone to use it. I regrettably told someone the name of a YOSD I was selling, and she decided to keep it. I'm glad they liked the name, but it was mine... :\

    9. I never even knew the orig name of the doll I got 2nd hand so I had no problem re-naming her. Its similar to getting a new pet, or rescuing one from the shelter... if the previous name fits then keep it, but if not then change it.

    10. Name changes for anything are no big deal to me. I did dog rescue, and a number of times we changed the dog's name (Shelby, sooooo many shelties named Shelby came through), but if we liked the name we'd stick with it. I can't see having any trouble changing an inanimate object's name when doing so to a dog didn't bother me

I might keep a name the previous owner used if I liked it, I might not. After coming up with names for over sixty dogs in ten years kind of burned me out on needing to name things though.

    11. I'll change the name. Infact I have. There's this kind of understanding. Like when I got my doll Noah her original name was actually Phoebe which I thought was cute. But I didn't keep the name because I liked the name Noah for her better. It suits what I had in mind for the doll's character - an artsy girl who likes dressing girly. That's my girl and that's how she's been since I got her.

I don't even know what my other dolls names use to be. I found old pictures of them including the head my hybrid doll used to have but once their in my hands their name gets changed.

I would honestly be super uncomfortable if someone asked me to keep their old character alive after I bought the doll. It's my doll now, sorry.

    12. All my 2 dolls were bought from other people. Thankfully they didn't ask me to keep their names.
But if any seller were to ask me to keep the name or prohibit me from selling it, I'll reject the transaction flat out. too much drama, too little time in life and I get to keep my money for something else worthy

    13. I think it would put me off buying a second hand doll if the current owner asked me to keep the name. I figure that if someone wants their doll's name/character/appearance etc. to remain intact then they should be keeping the doll themselves; I don't think it's realistic/fair to place restrictions on an item someone will be paying for.

    14. If I had purchased the doll in the final image and, in my opinion, the name given by the previous owner, matched this way could leave. If it's a doll for putting my character, give it a name that will come up.

    15. It's an inanimate object, ultimately. I don't see why it matters. I don't think the previous owner gets any say once its in your possession. They can ask if you will, but considering that person will probably never see that doll again... I don't know why they'd care in the first place.

I think it matters more for living things. For example, my husband got a pet cockatiel from a breeder when it was old enough to be away from its parents. He was told it was male. We found out several years later, when she laid eggs one time, that she was in fact female. The problem with this is she was given the name of a male anime character. Since she learned and reacts to her name, it felt wrong to change it. So we haven't.

    16. If I paid for the doll, it is mine to do with as I wish. I might be irritated if a previous seller thought they could control anything about a doll I now own, and a name is such a personal thing... just no.

    17. I'd just rename the doll... once the owner makes the decision to sell, they probably don't care if you change the name. I'd make an exception if I bought a doll from a friend and the doll was more collateral for a loan they needed than properly selling it, though. I think I'd also want to keep the name of any dolls that were being sold after someone died... if they kept that doll to the end and loved it, I wouldn't want to change the name!

    18. Not sure that's such a great idea w/dogs or cats - they CAN recognize their names - but DOLLS???? Nope.

    19. I wouldnt ask as I would assume that as you have sold it to me then you agree that it is mine to do with and call what ever I like. If I was asked to keep the name the same I would politely decline. You do not continue to have control over a doll after selling it.

    20. My feeling this is that once I sell a doll, it's no longer mine and the new owner can do whatever they want with it, including changing its name. In fact, I think I'd prefer if the new owner changed the doll's name, as the names I give my dolls are actually names of my original characters and the character does, in fact, continue even if I don't have a doll to represent them. As for secondhand dolls I've bought, I didn't even know the names their previous owners had given them most of the time. I give them the names I choose for them.
