1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Forever faceups?

Nov 5, 2023

    1. All my dolls but one have the faceups I got with them or did myself. So that includes company faceups and artists faceups and faceups dome by myself.

I do have one I need to redo because the MSC became a bit cloudy...on a Light Brown resin.

    2. I haven't ever changed a face-up for any of my dolls (if we don't take into account the one that I did myself as a study and wiped it off to redo later) but most of them are relatively recent acquisitions so it's of no surprise. My first doll, however, is from 2011-2012, and his company face-up has lasted until these days. It is a bit flaky but not too noticeable. At some point I may want to change it but I don't know yet what to paint instead. I get attached to the certain facial features and cannot really imagine my dolls having other face-ups (and what doesn't help here is that often the face-up is what has drawn me to this specific pre-owned doll in the first place). Also, I haven't ever commissioned face-up and my own skills are at a very low level.

      I really like this explanation!
It's a bit similar to my decision for my character to have a scar now after the doll fell onto her face and got a scratch. Somehow the same doll got her face-up damaged again in some time while out of all my other dolls only the anthro animals got scratches. Must be a character trait.
When that doll first had a scratch, it was suggested that I had her repainted but I absolutely love her face-up and that's why I decided it's better to have "a scar". Later I learned that the face-up artist left the hobby (I was lucky to get one more doll painted by them) and know I treasure this face-up even more, although scarred.

    3. I paint all of my dolls myself, and I used to repaint them every few years, which was easy to do when I had a smaller collection. But with the number of dolls I have now, it just doesn't happen anymore. Some of my dolls have 10 year old faceups! Luckily I'm still happy with the work that I did 10 years ago. But my skills have improved so it would be nice to repaint them just for fun, but they don't need it IMO. So yeah, it's not my intention to have long-lasting faceups, it just kind of happened and I'm okay with it. :XD:

    4. I make the faceups myself, but with the oldest dolls I have trouble changing their faces, because then they won't have the same expression. I can't replicate the same face in a more professional way, which is exactly what I want.

    5. Just wanted to share a Luts face-up from 2008.

    6. I don't change them up much, if they came with a company face-up I might modify it a little, but then I just leave it.
I redid a couple of my earlier face-ups, they needed it, but mostly I just leave them alone.

    7. I paint all my dolls, and despite them having set looks, because I'm always improving I change them fairly often. There's one that I haven't changed since his first faceup (I think) and needs to be refreshed, while there's another boy I just redid the faceup of after six years whose new faceup I feel never needs to be changed again. So it really depends on how proud of the faceups I am.

    8. I am definitely in the 'forever faceup' boat with my dolls that have company face-ups (Supia Doll + Withdoll do particularly good face-ups and I can't imagine my dolls without them, it's part of their characters now). However on dolls I've painted myself, I repaint them constantly, but that's because I'm still learning and am never satisfied with my work lol.

    9. It's very hard for me to wipe a faceup I didn't do. I've only been able to pull off that feat once. My version of his faceup doesn't look as clean, but it definitely made him feel more mine. Now that I've made all his clothes too, he REALLY feels like he's mine.

I won't wipe my default DoD or Ladious faceups unless they become severely damaged. The rest are potentially up for redoing at some point. I have little issue with wiping my own work and will readily redo anyone I want that has a faceup by me.

    10. I've started to learn how to faceups because a lot of my dolls are secondhand and have faded, chipped faceups or the sealant has yellowed.
It'll probably take a long time before I'll be pleased with my own work, but I'm enjoying the process.
The only faceups I would probably keep as long as possible would be my Volks one-off.
There are some I'd like to redo when I have the skills.

    11. No forever faceup here!
I redo my dolls faceups from time to time (but not very often. Around every 5-10 years lol) because they fade, or because their resin change over time, in case of hybrids.
Especially my kumadori-like faceup, because they are very red, and red pigments fade quickly over time.

    12. Once my boys get a face-up, it stays and will not change as the face-up is strongly tied to their character. I have some dolls that still have their default face-ups and they're from companies that have long since closed. Both my Unidoll boys have the default face-ups and they're pristine. Some of my guys have face-ups from unknown artists (bought 2nd hand) or the artists who painted them for me are no longer taking commissions so I'd never have those wiped.

I should have Moswen's face-up and body blushing (custom by Angel Toast, 2008) re-done but not because I don't like it but because he's my favourite doll, heavily played with and there's a fair bit of rubbing/chipping to his face-up and body blushing despite how careful I've been. I've contacted AT and she said she'd be happy to re-paint him the same as she did 15 years ago (or as close as she could copy her work from that long ago). But because he is my favourite and there will be some slight differences with the re-paint even though it's the same artist re-doing him, I'm still hesitant to send him off.
