French Resin or Urethane?

Jan 1, 2010

    1. This. I appeciate it for what is was and not for what it becomes, sadly. I have grown away from it though, and much prefer the opaque look.

      I also agree that some companies have a urethane option that is really uncomparable to the quality of their french resin, however a sacrifice is made either way in my case, and I prefer the lesser quality resin over the yellowing. It makes me sad to see my dolls turn yellow so easily and quickly, and because I love to have them out and play with them it's generally going to happen as soon as it can XD;

I do not buy from some companies because they use french resin. Call me fussy because I am XD

    2. For me, what matters is the doll itself, not what he/she is made of.

I own a French resin doll--Angell-Studio ftw, haha--and even though I didn't know French resin would yellow faster than urethane at the time I got him anyway because he fitted the character I've had just perfectly, I knew no other sculpt would be able to hold a candle to Antonine, the doll that became my Dante. Anyhow his resin is A-S's butter skin, so it's already yellow-ish itself, although the yellow doesn't photograph unless I put him next to, say, a DOD doll. Even then he looks perfectly natural, and even if he doesn't, I don't care about the difference so what right has anyone else to (about my doll, of course)?

Even if he gets banana yellow in the future and will look severely out of place next to my future crew, I'd still love him anyway, because the yellowing would show how long he's been with me and he's my first doll so he's special.

    3. I have a french resin doll, angell studio as well, and i find the resin absolutely gorgeous. Now when I look at some urethane dolls I find them too opaque, not that the french resin I have is incredibly tranlucent or anything but it looks more natural. I think I am willing to buy more french resin dolls because I find them prettier.

Though, I do worry about yellowing ALOT and absolutely refuse to take him into sunshine or even out of his box that often, yellowing to an extent I can handle but honestly I don't think I will love him as much banana coloured.

    4. French resin may be pretty but I'm so easily paranoid so I can never be able to buy one I mean I barely let my girl out of her box because I'm so paranoid (she is normal skin from dollmore) so if I must/are able to then I choose urethane over french resin

    5. are all dollmore french resin?

    6. Urethane. Ive had french resin dolls before and they yellow quite easily.

    7. I'm quite paranoid myself, but... I couldn't keep my boy in the box all the time. I'm keeping him out of direct sunlight, but he always sits on my desk or on his shelf. I love him too much, I have to see him all the time. Though I fully understand, why people hide their dolls too.
On the other hand, yellowing is something you simply can't avoid, like it was said before. People grow old, dolls are yellowing and nothing can change that, but it doesn't mean we should love them less.

    8. Would never buy French resin, even though I pined after a Zaoll Luv for so long. When she came out in urethane I was over the moon. I want to be able to enjoy my dolls and not worry about the resin.

    9. I love the french resin and look for dolls that are made out of it. The resins now have UV stabilizer and so far I've not noted yellowing. I don't keep them in boxes, but they live in my work/sewing room so there are always quilts or fabric around - so if I'm not in the room I throw something over the top to block the light.

    10. I didn't think so S:

    11. Nope! ;D But Zaolls are offered in both types of resin. ^^ I do not know if the others are too, but I think they are all in urethane (there is a good possibility I could be wrong though).

    12. How yellow do they get? This is really a hard one as the French resin has a lovely luminosity to is more akin to living breathing skin. Do they keep turning darker and darker yellow? Does the rose color also yellow? Are you better off buying the yellow-tones to start with? Is there any way to fo full body "blushing" to disguise the yellow as time goes on? I would love to have a French resin Narae but not if she is going to "turn" before I even get to know her. Is it really a quick transition? Would you buy a used French resin sculpt?

    13. I got my second doll (AS Leira) when not knowing that she's french resin, i later on discovered that she is and have heard that there tend to be more problems with french resin dolls =(
Does AS only do french resin? if i'm right they also do solid skin other than translucent, but not on MSDs =/
is that also french resin? or different? can french resin look solid at all, if possible?

    14. It's funny-- I have 8 tan dolls, for whom I am all-too-happy to make extra efforts in order to avoid discoloration. Three of these are Realskin dolls, who're made of a urethane & French resin mixture. But I'm not scared of them turning green, and I'd buy 'em again. And I even have whiteskin dolls who have yellowed slightly over the years, whose coloration doesn't bother me all that much.

But I've never bought a pure-French-resin doll, and I don't think I ever will... All of my friends who own them have seen the same thing... it yellows so quickly, and so deeply into the resin itself, below-surface. If left to its own devices, it can turn a fairly intense uncooked-pasta yellow. (Which, admittedly, would be quite eyepoppingly fetching if you have a character who's jaundiced).

I don't know what I'd do if I fell in love with a sculpt that was ONLY offered in French-resin, honestly. Knowing me, I would probably cave in and buy him anyway, because The Perfect Sculpt reaches my heart on a level where mere discolorations can't reach. <3 But that hasn't happened to me yet! So I just admire other people's beautiful Narins & Manos from afar.

    15. I have a circa 2005 Souldoll Paris in French resin who is as yellow as JennyNemesis describes in her post above. This was my first doll and I did some fairly foolish newbie stuff with him which surely hastened his color change. He is astonishingly yellow; this is not the Volks oldskin ivory. I'd be interested to hear from any other owners (if any exist) of similar-era French resin Souldolls; perhaps more careful handling gave a better result for these guys...? I'm getting the idea to sand the heck out of the head and hands and see what happens...

    16. ... Veering only slightly OT... From a few years ago, I remember Smidge's trick of using Arm and Hammer's Baking Soda & Peroxide Toothpaste to de-yellow her Narin. There used to be a photo tutorial on here, I don't know if it's still here. She said the gentle bleachness & gentle abrasive helped measurably. But aww, that might've been for gradual/first-time yellowing.... I dunno if that'd make a dent in that bright pasta-color. (Having seen the poor pretty Paris Jaune de 2005, I always wish I could donate him a new liver).

    17. i have read that french resin is polyurethane resin with transparent pigmints added to it.

    18. French resin isnt the only resin to go yellow....

I have a doll I junk-cast in "Craft-Cast" which is a stock-standard polyurethane resin... I kept the parts out of sentimentality and he looked like a Banana after two years sitting on an indoor shelf. All resins will yellow and the horrid "green" Iplehouse dolls were a result of the pigment used... like resin brands all pigments are subject to different reactions dependant on their make up...

    19. Island Doll is now using an environmentally friendly resin - though they have refused to send me a TDS (Technical Data Sheet) so I can see if there are any allergens my body wont like so I cant vouch for it myself but its what they are advertising LOL

    20. Only French resin! And better yellowed!))I have in French and in Urethan - but do prefer if all dolls were in French resin..And older dolls have as beauitiful beige tone as urethan never will have!I like transparancy and human warmth coming ferom french Resin dolls most of all)))And my 3 year dolls even were not covered with MSC - maybe this help to get this evenly beige colour?I have Limhwa and Supia in French))
