From your point of view, is any BJD worth thousands of dollars?

Jul 5, 2009

    1. -Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
Yes! A doll can be worth any amount.
-If you have ever bought a limited doll from a second hand market for a minimum of a few thousand dollars, what are the pros and cons of this? And do you worry that it may lose value due to popularity (or lack of) or from typical wear over time? What makes that doll worth it to you?
If I ever spent that much I would definitely make sure I kept it in well shape. No I wouldn't worry about it losing popularity as I probably wouldn't resell it.
-To those who would pay this amount but haven't/can't: What makes a doll worth this amount to you?
To me, if the mold is unique, with special items, maybe a faceup/body blush...maybe then it could be worth a few thousand. Maybe if it's the doll of my dreams it can be worth that amount.

    2. Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
For me, it's never, because, who profits from that kind of sales? It's not the companies, who would be recycling the money into the business to maybe produce better goods for us, the consumers. The money would be going to the person who was fortunate enough to have gotten the doll at a time when it was available for a much lower price from the company.

But is it normal for the prices of second-hand limiteds to soar? Absolutely. Because the supply is fixed or low and demand is generally higher, prices would definitely rise. But I'm the type of consumer who camps at the lower end of the demand curve. 8D

Aaaand, I guess I can say all this because I still don't have a 'dream doll'. It might be different for other collectors. :)

To those who would not pay this amount, even if you did have the money: Let's just pretend that your dream dolly is a limited going for a few thousand, why wouldn't you be willing to pay this amount?
Other than the economic reason mentioned above, I suppose the more fundamental reason is because I believe in fate. If the doll was meant to be mine, I would get it in the end. My previous few dolls have all come to me like that, and my upcoming dolls too have a fatalistic element to them, so, I do strongly believe, if they're meant to be mine, they would be, and there's no point forcing things if they're not.

    3. I'd willing to spend any amount of money for something I really want, like a book I bought last week for $350 .

It is limited and I bought the very last copy! the book can be purchased in its normal edition for like $10 on Amazon (which I already have) but the special lettered edition contains a short story of 10 pages not sold anywhere!! that short story is only found in that edition and I was dying to read it!!! So I sold a lot of things (a BJD included) to be able to buy it and I did. I read the story already and it was more than worth it!

My answer: I believe that anything and everything that makes me happy can be worth a thousand dollars and more. That's how I feel and have nothing more to say.

    4. I think what's interesting about this thread is the viewpoint of the people participating. I don't really have a specific answer to any of the questions posed, but I will say this.

I didn't read every post in this thread, but I got the impression from the few that I read that everyone thought 4000 was alot. I believe that the majority of the members here must be people of relative average incomes. and I'll agree, that at this point in time and my foreseeable future, I would not pay that price for a doll, because that same price could grant me so many other useful things. But my day job is an accountant, I look at big numbers all day, and 4000 is pocket change to some people.

    5. I wouldn't spend on a doll more than half of my monthly income (which doesn't amount to thousands, believe me). I can save up (since I really don't want to spend that much from a single salary) but I still would feel very awkvard about using up too much. Well, my feelings might change, but a resin doll isn't worth that much to me. A doll that costs that much might be oh-that'd-be-nice-to-have-item for me but I can pass on it.

    6. is any BJD worth thousands of dollars

      Absolutely no. and never.

However i still buy them against my better judgement on the marketplace a lot higher than its original price because my dolls are a hobby based on emotional impulses and hardly logical at all.

    7. I would never pay over $1,000 for a doll.

(people you make attack me for what I am going to say)
I think Volks rips people off. I meen a doll model with only one wig, one pair of eye and under were for like what? $700? Thats just lame.
I have got a doll from Volks and the said "$20" on shiping for a 30 cm size doll wig..... I was un happy.

    8. My mother almost had a heart attack when I told her I spent over $250 on my girl... I can't imagine exactly what she'd do if I spent over a grand, but I know it wouldn't be pretty DX

One of my dream dolls is around $400 from the company, and I'm more than willing willing to start saving up for him. I might even come across a used doll of the mold if I'm lucky. But if he was suddenly discontinued and his price shot up another $500, I'd sadly have to wave goodbye.

So for me, I'd never spend that much, especially if it's a limited being resold to turn a profit.

    9. I can understand why some dolls are the price/value they are but I am not sure I could ever justify buying any of them myself. This is mainly because of my income and also I would feel rather guilty spending that much on a doll. If I do however end up winning the lottery I may well change my mind!

    10. Worth and value is determined by the market, by what people are willing to pay - and obviously, some dolls are set as worth thousands (such as Bermanns, that can go over $6000).

I have paid over $1000, even over $2000, because of the rarity of the doll, and how much I wanted and adored them.

Worth is determined by the buyer, and if it's your money, and you can afford it - then by all means, if it makes you happy, you have every right to spend it, whatever the amount, if you think it's justified.

    11. In a word, no. Not for me, anyway. This is a hobby, and hobbies in my book have to come second to things like eating and paying the rent. Most hobbies become deep, black holes into which you regularly insert most of your disposable income. The question becomes, how much of my income is disposable?? Not that much, for sure. Yes, I know, I can't take it with me, but there's only so much to take.

    12. A doll is not worth that much money. Hardly anything is these days.

    13. I see SOOM's limited's, if you get the whole set, is over $1000, And on Ebay, I see VOLKS Limited Haruhi for sale over $9000 *literally* I personally don't think I would get even my perfect dream doll at that high a price, but however, getting simple things like a wig, or a pair of eyes, or more accessories for your dolls ends up costing that high. Esp. if you have many dolls.

    14. -Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
I wouldn't think so.I can see why some dolls would be more expensive than others (Fullsets and the like) but, personally I wouldn't be willing to spend that much.
Though If I had $1000+ to spend on a doll, I'd only concider buying a "very" expensive doll if I really liked it~

    15. Let's be honest here; how many of you who say "I couldn't pay thousands for one doll" have a larger collection? If you, say have 5 or more dolls and love them, how is that different from a person getting the one doll they love and enjoying it just as much as your 5 dolls? So, if you can afford it and really love it, then buy it :)

    16. Well thats up to each person to decide. If they can afford thousands GREAT! but that is not for me, i can see $1000 doing much more for my home economy. Plus it is all decided by market circumstances, rarity, and effort put on the doll, especially if it is a limited edition piece.

    17. -Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?

No.But that's also because I don't think any collectors item should be priced that much. I think it's more of taking advantage.

-To those who would not pay this amount, even if you did have the money: Let's just pretend that your dream dolly is a limited going for a few thousand, why wouldn't you be willing to pay this amount?

Don't think it's worth it. Actually, the higher the price, the less likely I would buy it. True, it's beautiful but that's not reason enough. Even if it's the perfect mold for my character, still wouldn't take it.

    18. -Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
I don't think any doll is worth several thousands, but then again I don't think a coin, stamp or baseball card should be worth the insane amount of money that some go for. Looking at it in another perspective, it wouldn't be much of a hobby if the limited didn't exist.

-If you have ever bought a limited doll from a second hand market for a minimum of a few thousand dollars, what are the pros and cons of this? And do you worry that it may lose value due to popularity (or lack of) or from typical wear over time? What makes that doll worth it to you?
I only purchase dolls to be my already existing characters. I have no plans to actually buy to sell it later. The molds increase in price because of the demand for it and the hype behind it.

-To those who would pay this amount but haven't/can't: What makes a doll worth this amount to you?
Perhaps the beauty of the mold. Aesthetics are a powerful thing.

-To those who would not pay this amount, even if you did have the money: Let's just pretend that your dream dolly is a limited going for a few thousand, why wouldn't you be willing to pay this amount?
Because a person should not have to sell an arm and a leg just to get a dream doll, but this is where patience is the key.

    19. "Worth" is ALWAYS in the eye of the buyer, particularly when it comes to luxury items, which BJDs certainly are! People will pay thousands of dollars for a rare stamp or a baseball card or just about anything they really wish to own. Is a little piece of paper (stamp or card or artwork) worth it??? Maybe, or maybe not. There is a market value to these things, but they change. And the buyer may feel it's worth it to pay MORE than the market value, if they MUST have it. And heck, if they can afford it and if they want it, why not?

-Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
If I wanted a doll badly enough and had the money, sure.

-If you have ever bought a limited doll from a second hand market for a minimum of a few thousand dollars, what are the pros and cons of this? And do you worry that it may lose value due to popularity (or lack of) or from typical wear over time? What makes that doll worth it to you?
No. The most I've paid was around one thousand for a Volks One-Off, first-hand. Market value doesn't matter since I don't plan on re-selling... although I could have sold for more at some point--don't know about now, with the economy being what it is, though. But anyway, as I said, I don't plan on selling. It's worth it because I had the money and I wanted it--period.

-To those who would pay this amount but haven't/can't: What makes a doll worth this amount to you?
See above. It's worth it if you want the doll and have the money to pay the price.

-To those who would not pay this amount, even if you did have the money: Let's just pretend that your dream dolly is a limited going for a few thousand, why wouldn't you be willing to pay this amount?
I can't say I wouldn't ever, but I will say it's unlikely that I'll pay so much for a doll. For one thing, I have my dream dolls already, and luckily, they didn't cost several thousand. Also, I'd have to REALLY want that doll for several thousand, and so far, I haven't wanted a doll THAT badly! But I figure that if I've already paid a thousand for a doll, it's not a huge step to think of several thousand... But most dolls seem to be available for under a thousand, with a few going over, and only a really rare few going for more than that. I also usually try to get the dolls when they are available, so I don't have to pay a premium for a rare doll! Most of mine are limiteds... I just get them at retail, which isn't too awfully high... at least in comparison to some secondary-market prices.

    20. -Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
I'm after Dollshe Bermann and Husky, so - yes, sometimes doll is worth quite a big amount of money. I personally am ready to pay 3000, but never 8000. Too much for me.

-If you have ever bought a limited doll from a second hand market for a minimum of a few thousand dollars, what are the pros and cons of this? And do you worry that it may lose value due to popularity (or lack of) or from typical wear over time? What makes that doll worth it to you?
It is the doll you were longing, isn't it? (What a pity you couldn't buy it several years before, a lot cheaper and NEW.) That is a huge Pro, I suppose. Besides, it is a rare and expensive doll, that becomes more rare and more expensive.
The biggest Contro for me is that it's not new and it is used if not *modded* beyond repair.
Also, it the general problem with extremely pricey things - you are afraid to play with them freely.

Price-changing doesn't bother me, because I'm not going to sell my dolls.

-To those who would pay this amount but haven't/can't: What makes a doll worth this amount to you?
The doll itself. I don't have many doll-dreams, I just plan to collect several old Dollshes, two or three... But if Dollshe start making new Huskies and Bermanns selling them, say, 500 dollars a head, I'll be absolutely happy.))) I collect dolls, not limited edition or high prices.

-To those who would not pay this amount, even if you did have the money: Let's just pretend that your dream dolly is a limited going for a few thousand, why wouldn't you be willing to pay this amount?
4000 and more. I wouldn't say never ever, but not now. Just too much money for me, I would have to save sum like this for years...))) And I have lots of more important demands.
But I still think that some doll can be WORTH such a price!
