From your point of view, is any BJD worth thousands of dollars?

Jul 5, 2009

    1. Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
Well. It would have to be really special. And I mean really special, but I don't see why not.

What makes a doll worth this amount to you?

As I say, it would have to be special, but if I really wanted it, and had the money, I suppose I would, I wouldn't really be able to say exactly what it was that made it special unless I was in that situation. But I don't tend to judge on price, if I fall in love with something and its financially viable, I'll buy it, I won't disregard it simply because its expensive. But I'd have to be 100% sure about it.

    2. i love these dolls, but i am not willing to pay more than $300 at this time since i would rather eat and put gas in my car. i dont think i would ever pay $1000 for a doll. sure they're cool and all, but they just aren't worth that much to me.

    3. I'm about to purchase a doll for $900 and I'm really nervous about it. I've never spent that much on anything before, and everyone tells me that she's not worth it, but when you see a doll and fall absolutely in love with him or her, it all seems worth it. I can't wait to get my new girl.

    4. Lolol! I'm sure I spent thousands (even on my standards!) already so I'm long past worrying about any of that. ;)

If I want it that badly and I have the spare money at hand, I'll get it. If not, then it's too bad. I'm not going to have an epileptic seizure if I can't have a doll. xD

    5. When I first got into the hobby I though it was crazy to spend anything over $500 for a doll, and that was really pushing it for me. My last doll I bought was $850 dollars, and I'm paying on off now that's $1,200 dollars (Volks Ruby..damn limited in tan ;-;.)

Now I would never spend $3,000 dollars for a doll because that's a little extreme for me. There was a Bermann that went for $5,000 or $6,000 dollars.

    6. I was told 400$ for a dolls (shipping + wigs and a shirt included) was being ripped off for a lousy doll. Which got me thinking. Yes some of the prices for these dolls are crazy. Some are worth that price and others are not. There is companies that have reasonable prices, and there is others that aren't. I think I will never ever pay more then 800$ for a doll. If I wanted Shinku doll, I would have find a nice reasonable sculpt that suites her, and create my own then paying 3k for her, or any ltd cosplay type doll. But hey, if you have that kind of money, then go for it. I find it steep for a doll.

    7. Over a thousand is a little much for me. Under a thousand I'm okay with, but go above that and I really just balk at the price for a few moments. I suppose if it was my dream doll I might get it, though. I'd really, really have to like the doll, however. If it was someone selling the doll second-hand, they would have had to have kept the doll in really good condition.

    8. Yes, it is a collectors hobby after all. However, that does not mean I could ever justify that much money on a doll myself. Atleast not right now with my low paying job and student debt. If I ever won the lottery maybe I'd spoil myself and get a volks doll since I've grown fond of them - but in the meantime I have to be realistic. Unless I spend 2 or more years saving up in a responsible manner - I wont be spending 1k or more on a doll.

    9. -Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
I can see why others would pay this much, but I would not. To me, it's not worth it.

-To those who would not pay this amount, even if you did have the money: Let's just pretend that your dream dolly is a limited going for a few thousand, why wouldn't you be willing to pay this amount?
Only if I somehow became quite rich. XD; Otherwise, no. My dream doll is amazing, but I can admire her without having her. I don't think I would be able to play with her if I paid that much. It is stressful to own expensive things.

(edit: er, I think I worded my answer a little weird because I read the question wrong. XD;; Oops.)

    10. I feel about this almost exactly the same as you. My most expensive doll is a Soom Cuprit and I only got her because she was the doll that got me really excited about BJDs...the first sculpt I fell in love with and sparked so much more interest in this hobby than I initially had. I would never spend that much on a doll again. I absolutely adore Soom Amber for example, and she just popped up on the marketplace for $1200 for the fullset (!!) which I consider that an excellent deal. In the end I just wouldn't be comfortable "casually" spending that much money on a treat for myself, art or not.

I am more than willing to admire Amber without having her. :) I would feel horrible guilt and stress to have bought something so gorgeous just for myself.

    11. -Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?
Yes and no. For ME, it would never be worth it for a doll because I am definitely a casual collector - I don't keep any doll for a terribly long time, I don't buy them to preserve them and be careful with them, I play with them and I display them in lighted rooms. It just wouldn't make sense for me to take a collector's item off the market when I am simply not really a collector. If I got said $1000+ doll and removed its faceup and its limited clothing, I would feel a little bad because someone else probably wanted it just as it was and it's doubtful that I'd feel strongly enough about a sculpt to buy a limited off the secondary market to alter it to the state I wished it to be in. For others, extremely pricey dolls are worth it. They may have sought that doll for a long time, perhaps to embody their most beloved character, perhaps because they are a collector. Whatever their reason, I see no problem with someone spending any amount of money on what they want as long as they can afford the necessities. If they forego their necessities (and, god forbid, their dependants' necessities) for said dream doll then they probably need to re-evaluate their priorities.

-If you have ever bought a limited doll from a second hand market for a minimum of a few thousand dollars, what are the pros and cons of this? And do you worry that it may lose value due to popularity (or lack of) or from typical wear over time? What makes that doll worth it to you?
Well, like I said, I wouldn't buy it for its collector's value so losing value isn't really an issue for me. Things will only lose value to me if I let them lose value. Once I've enjoyed them then I am okay with some loss of money from them. Sure, I'd like to get back what I paid if I can but if I can't then I accept that's just what happens with time in a hobby. It's not unusual, it's even a bit expected. So I suppose I wouldn't worry about it but then again, I can't really wrap my mind around spending large amounts of money on any one doll. Thusfar, my most expensive doll has been $350ish which is actually pretty inexpensive in the world of dolls!

-To those who would pay this amount but haven't/can't: What makes a doll worth this amount to you?
      Not applicable to me.

-To those who would not pay this amount, even if you did have the money: Let's just pretend that your dream dolly is a limited going for a few thousand, why wouldn't you be willing to pay this amount?

Because I don't have dream dollies, really. That's just the bottom line. Even if I really want a sculpt, I can always change my desires and expectations to match my means when it comes to this hobby. It's not important enough to sacrifice a lot for, for me. While I might spend extra on brand name medication versus generic medication, I am unlikely to get my Holy Grail Dream Doll when I can get A Pretty Darn Awesome Doll when my means would make it much more comfortable to take the less pricey doll. I guess I can say it best when I say I am willing to settle for less with dolls! I know some people aren't, but I am fine with it.

    12. It just wouldn't be my dream doll if it was that expensive. I don't buy limited dolls. Frankly, I just don't feel it's worth paying hundreds of dollars more for clothes and a special faceup, when I can get the same doll for hundreds less and make my own clothes and do my own faceups. I also tend not to like a lot of faceups done by companies, especially on limited models, because to my taste it looks overdone- too much eye shadow, in particular. I just don't feel a 1/3 scale doll should cost more than $650, I think when you charge more than that it crosses the line from reasonable profit to excessive profit.

    13. Not every limited is a standard with a special outfit and faceup. Some -- quite a few, actually, and this usually encompasses the more expensive limiteds -- are unique sculpts only available in that limited form.

      Just worth mentioning.

    14. Personally, I don't think they're worth it. I also see them as luxuries them as "if you have the extra cash, why not". If there is one that I desperately love, I'll save for it in time.

    15. -Is any doll worth that amount from your point of view?

There is. My father bought a crafted wooden huge door that cost 2xxx$ . And it's not even an investment..I meant..who would buy a crafted secondhand door in my country. But then..everytime my father come home after work..he will enjoying the view of his door..and he is satisfy with it...there is a small smile in his lips. Weird? No. I think anything that make me happy worth every penny.

-To those who would pay this amount but haven't/can't: What makes a doll worth this amount to you?

Happiness of owning it. The proud feeling. The "Congratulations! You have it! Your dream come true!" feeling. In every hobbies there is a goal. Like in philateli, the goal is to have all of the stamps in the world. Or in BJD..maybe the goal is to have that certain sculpt or having a complete collection that will cost over thousands dollars.

    16. Actually I can see buying an expensive door. For one thing, it's hand-carved, while a doll is not the original sculpture. Plus, you use it every day, it stays useful forever, and it gets MORE beautiful with age. A doll is more delicate, and most kinds of damage can make it look pretty bad. And what does it have besides its looks? It has cool posing I guess, but you can get that for less expensive. You cannot get an inexpensive hand-carved door, but you can get a *cough* inexpensive doll that is as skillfully sculpted and well-engineered as a $2000 doll.

    17. Personally, I don't think any BJD is worth "thousands of dollars". By thousands of dollars, I assume $3000 upwards. If there is a dream doll for me that costs thousands of dollars, I would give up on pursuing because after all, year after year, there is always going to be a new mold that's going to eventually capture my attention but without that huge price. Yes, BJDs can be seen as luxuries because not many are able to afford one. However, I don't see BJDs on the same level that I see with Chanel. When you carry Chanel everywhere, it's an iconic symbol that you're wealthy. Most people would recognize it. When you carry BJDs everywhere, only a few will recognize that it is a sign of luxury.

    18. The door is put on my backyard...not as 'real' door..not as necessary really..lol. Well yes it's true..there are many other beautiful dolls that less than thousand dollars..and maybe with much more good posing abilities (fairyland for ex...). But then every people have different taste.. And I thought doll is sculpted by hand too..or is it with factory machine?
Okay..let's say not door..my father also collects paintings..that of course cost much more too..and they doesn't even move.
And with less people that come to my home..the paintings are not a sign of luxury..
But they are a part of enjoyment.

The question here is if there any doll worth thousand dollars in your opinion right? In my opinion yes there is..and they're my dream dolls. Personally I wouldn't spent thousand of dollars for a rug..and maybe other people would want to but not want to spent thousand of dollars for BJD..and so what? People have different taste and want for so many choices of luxuries out there.

But I do really like Inmylove opinion. She has a very good point (though even when you wear fake inexpensive Chanel people still think you're wealthy..:XD:). Although for me..I will keep chasing my dream dolls. Because they have their own spark..that no other dolls have it...haha. Exception if there are similar molds (really similar) that cost less and much better posing..I will go for that one..especially if the size is right for me. (Ex. I'll go for MNF Miyu that cost 4xx++ other than volks F-01.. The size is right..(msd)..the cost is good for a fantastic poser..and I like how similar they are. Big eyes..a rather chubby cheeks..cute babyish doll face..)

Okay..I'm almost off topic here..:doh..please sum up my eulogy yourself..lol..

And I don't mean every doll worth that much..I've seen one doll..that has basic version..but then has a special ver. with different face up, wig, clothes that sell for xxxx$.. I would rather commissioned someone or do the face up myself and buy similar wig for the basic so it looks similar other than pay for that triple over price... Unfortunately I've fallen in love with doll that have no basic ver.:sweat

    19. To Clarissaholic, LOL I knew someone was going to mention the fake bags. People only want to fake something when many people want something that they are unable to have. It's almost flattering that people would want to fake something original whether it's a bag or a doll. My point was to bring out that a luxury is not only something that person him or herself knows is special, it also has to speak volumes to others within society as well. Perhaps also something that many hope to obtain.

    20. i was looking up the volks dollfie dream saber alter (my personal fave DD) to see if the cost was reasonable, to find that the only one on ebay was selling for 12000 american dollars. unopened sure, but just the same.
I think thats overboard, no question.

the point of when they go overboard? not sure, but there are points of ridiculousness.
