Fully open, half-closed, almost closed or fully closed eyes?

Sep 20, 2022

    1. Am curious about everyone's preferences, do you prefer doll sculpts with fully open, half-closed, almost closed or fully closed eyes? Or do you prefer a mix?

I personally tend to prefer sculpts with half-closed eyes! Sometimes it gives the doll a certain kind of expression which I really love, such as romantic, arrogant and maybe even slightly melancholic :love

    2. I have a mix in my resin army, but I lean to fully open or half closed as my main types for preference.

    3. Unfortunately part-closed eyes of any type make a doll look nasty and sly to me, so I only go for fully open eyes.

I'm OK with fully closed eyes too, but they're too limiting to be something I'd actually have on mny of my dolls.

    4. I have a weakness for partly-closed eyes, depending on the sculpt (like if there are two options, often I like the sleepy / romantic eye version more). I noticed I like it a lot for boy sculpts in particular.

    5. I have a mixed army as well~ BUT... I notice that if there is a choice between an Open Eye head and a dreaming head, those half closed dreamy eyes almost always get me! :D For the same reason you stated, I feel their expression can really be dynamic/varied with the right faceup.

A large majority of my collection are Open eye or half-close/dreaming eye. I do like sleeping eyes (fully closed), but I don't own nearly as many because they're more limiting.

    6. Mostly full open eyes, though I DO have a couple partly open eyes; but it has to fit the character. I have a couple of closed eye faceplates, but rarely use them.

    7. I've got all open eyes - I've been intrigued by some partly open eye sculpts, but not enough that I bought them. And closed eyes or ones where it's just open a tiny bit... nah, not really interested, though there's some cute ones. I personally enjoy getting to choose and play with a doll's eyes, so sleeping sculpts aren't much of my thing.

    8. I prefer open-eyed, but a lot of times end up with the "romantic" eyes because of some other feature unique to that option (like fantasy ears)

    9. I actually really dislike closed-eyed models, something about it feels very limiting to me. I imagine if I had a character who very specifically did not generally open their eyes...but mm yeah I've sold any 'dreaming' heads I've gotten alongside their regular counterparts!
I prefer fully-open, but I do have a doll who is modded to have half-open eyes and that's also alright, it definitely gives dolls a different feel!

edit - OH I had a thought! I have a pukipuki so she has face-plates! Some of those are 'dreaming' style and that's actually alright, since face-plates are extremely easy to swap out and so it actually gives me a lot of options. I think the normal "dreaming head + regular head" bothers me because it's much more unwieldy to swap out whole heads for the sake of a change in expression.

    10. For me it's all or nothing. Fully opened or fully closed :abambi::)

    11. I prefer open eye sculpts. I do own I think 2 dolls with partially closed eyes but it works for their characters. I do have one closed eye face plate.

    12. It's really hard for me to see a lot of the sculpts as full vs half lidded as depending on the sculpting it just seems to me like different eye shapes. I have a couple who have downcast eyes and I like them, but one of them I modded more open so he could meet my gaze. It really depends on the doll altogether. Most of my dolls are open or maybe half lidded who I see has just having more almond shaped eyes (less round).
I don't have any dolls with nearly or fully closed eyes.

    13. Really depends on the character. I usually prefer fully open, but sometimes half open or lidded is okay. I have two Migidoll Cynical heads (Yujin and Shion) but they're still open enough that I like them. I'm really not a fan of closed or mostly closed eyes. They can look beautiful in some specific situations, but I prefer the versatility of open eyed sculpts. I also tend to spend a lot of money on eyes, so I want them visible.

    14. I love dreaming sculpts. They’re just so versatile to photograph, because a change in angle makes them look sly or sleepy or serene… it’s just so much fun.

I have more open eyed dolls though just because they’re more common and I pick sculpts based on overall face shape. I tend to always want to snap up the dreaming version of a sculpt too if it exists though.

    15. Though I find almost closed and fully closed eyes to be very beautiful, I am more partial to open or half closed eyes. I really like the half closed eyes look since it can read as romantic and dreamy on one hand, or cunning on the other; it depends on the mood/expression I want the doll's character to have since some are more suited for one or the other. For now all of my crew has fully open eyes, but in the future I would like to have some half closed eyes sculpts!

    16. I prefer half closed eyes. They can create such various feelings- sly/condescending/sorrowful/mysterious...

    17. I have a mix and I like having multiple heads for the same sculpt for the versatility of facial expressions. For my Elfdoll Soah, I have her standard, smiling and reminisce heads. For My Dollshe Hound, Husky and Bernard, I have both OE and SA. For my Saint,I got the SA head and he tends to look high :D

    18. I've only ever had open eyes, though I have been tempted by some of the Luts Romantic sculpts.

    19. I agree with you! I think I love the effect of a half-closed/sleepy sculpt paired with smaller eyes, it's just an aesthetic I love and am eager to play with. I don't have any yet but am eager to get my hands on a Dollmore Zaoll Dreaming Muse

    20. I prefer narrow eye shapes, so in the earlier ages of this genre of dolls, I preferred half-closed or semi-sleepy-eyed sculpts. Now there is a larger variety of styles, so I prefer smaller, more realistic eye sculpts but probably still would go for the sleepy or fully closed ones, if they were optional plates/heads. Having said that, I love anime and Japanese video games, so I don't mind gigantic eyes, or any other size in between, I just have a preference for narrow eye shapes in general (when it comes to most dolls I own). (:
