Getting more used to accidents?

Sep 18, 2007

    1. Oh most definitely!
Ichigo's already had a few bumps and bruises, and I know better what sort of mishap it would take to really damage him terribly these days.
I do panic at the thought of him getting any irreparable damage, but for the most part, he's pretty darned sturdy. :)

I also used to think I could just replace him if it ever came down to it.
These days? I could never replace him. :sweat So some of the panic is still there, but still safely under the surface.

    2. Yeah, the Fear Factor wears off pretty fast once you start posing them. And once you get more than a couple dolls, you find that you do NOT have the energy to flip out completely every single time any one of them has an accident.

However, the vigilance against accidents-- that cannot be lessened over time. Every time one of the Tokyo Boys even starts to wobble, I scream like it's 1999 and leap to grab them before they fall. Then I scold them for a few minutes, and triple-check to make sure not one atom of valuable faceup has gone missing, and if there's no damage, then it's over. These guys are expensive and rare, I can't afford to get too lazy.

What does get easier over time is getting used to all the places to check for damage, and the vagaries of each doll. You get used to the way they fall. You get used to reading the subtle signs that say "I may be about to fall over, so keep your hands nearby". And with every non-damaging tumble, you just keep praying that your luck holds.

    3. LOL. That makes me think of the very slight wobble you can see, even through the camera lens, when posing. It's like..."dolly senses tingling"~! XD

    4. I don't have my doll yet but when I see people put thier dolls in high places or near a ledge with water below, I panick for them. (lol) I was like omg if that was me... it just wouldn't happen no matter how nice the scenary is.

    5. i'm more use to accidents happening but not actually calm.

Although in front of my brother i've stopped the 'Oh my god! Rae are you alright?' my family thought i was mental for that 2 weeks @@

Now it's, Rae falls over onto hard surface, i rush over to make sure he hasn't breaked his nose (Mo's big nose >__<) or scratched or ruined his face up. Same with Cain. I get paranoid and as my friends say if i was taking a photo and they start to fall i catch dolls first and camera is thrown aside... At our last doll meet, 3 lovely minis wanted to fall at the same time... kind of scared me to no end...

also if i put my boys on a book shelf even if it's very low to the ground, i check every 10 minutes to see if they are actually alright! My brother reckon i'm paranoid, when the boys fall over face forward we reach for their arms very quickly! But we were both scared when Rae did a face plant off the sette and onto the floor... luckily it was carpet...

    6. One thing I've noticed since getting my Snyder (her legs are Very kicky, and it takes a few dark rituals to get her to stand in one place for an extended period of time) is that my reflexes are amazing o.o lol. She's toppled from across the room, out of the corner of my eye, and I've still managed to catch her before she touched the ground.. I swear she does it just to see if I'll be able to catch her XP

    7. There has been no major accident with my gang. I'm pretty careful with them, not that they haven't taken the occasional face plant. I'm not too worried about my Obitsus, those girls can take most anything. Trey I keep an eye on beacause of his modded ears. I'm so afraid of them breaking.

The worst accident happened after I got my first tiny resin I managed to drop in a parking lot. She was in her box all wrapped up so there was no damage but I nearly had a heart attack.

    8. I've become increasingly paranoid of having my dolls fall, have something spilled on them, etc. Kris Naga has fallen flat on his face once (onto carpet, thankfully) but I'm hoping it never happens again. Basically I'm worried about breakage since I'm concerned about what if I can't buy a replacement part or have them fixed sometime down the line when they go "out of print," as it were.

    9. No. I hadn't had Mike two months, maybe 3 when he fell and chipped his nose. All my dolls are my babies and I never get use to it.

    10. I don't think I'll ever get used to it. When I first got my boy I was a little braver, standing him on my desk for hours at a time and leaving him be. He never fell or anything, he's wonderful at staying put xD But now I'd never dream of doing such a thing. It's wierd, I've almost gone backwards, in now the only time I'll leave them alone is if they're sitting very stable and on top of nothing higher than a foot above plush carpet. x3

    11. I'm embarassed by how much I freak out when an accident occurs. I'm VERY protective and cautious with my dolls, a lot moreso than other people from what I've learned by going to meet-ups. I'm not saying it's bad to be a little more confident in your doll's durability, though. I wish I could be. But I still can't get it out of my head that these are expensive, breakable dolls, that in my mind are priceless and irreplaceable. I have a hard time even letting other people handle them, because it seems inevitable that they'll try some impossible pose with them, not knowing the doll's limitations, and the doll will plop over onto a hard surface, sending me shrieking and freaking out whoever was holding them.

One time my Narae fell over into a window sill. A flesh-colored chunk of something fell onto the floor and I almost had a heart attack thinking it was her nose. Turns out she just knocked a chunk of sawdust out of the window, thank god.

    12. I've noticed that too. Right now, Lucien's head is kind of just floating (since Shirou stole his body) and so it rolled of the desk twice, and smacked the side of it on the way down. And I was just like "Ah, no scratches, no dents, all good. :D" and put him back on the desk.

    13. I guess I am getting a little more used to them, but I'm still terrified of breaking something (a nose, a finger...)!

It's also part of why I've never tried to change Athene's hands yet, and I'm also terrified for when I may have to take either of my dolls apart to restring them or do maintenance. I suppose the most you do it, though, the more you get used to it and then you are less afraid!

    14. At PersaCon, my girl took a HUGE fall off of a table onto some carpet. If it had been two months earlier, I probably would have started crying, but I just picked her up, slipped her wig back on, and checked for any damages. There was none, so I just sat her back down and smiled ^^

    15. Well I probably shouldn't worry so much I mean I dropped Kaito's torso from 5ft in the air onto solid concrete, it bounced and I caught it, not a single scratch on him (and believe me I checked :sweat). But I still worry, admittedly not as much as I used to, but my heart still leaps into my throat when he decides to dive off of high areas. My reflexes have improved immensely though, its gotten to a point where I can normally predict that he's going to fall before he even begins to move lol.
Now Shreds on the other hand, he is such a sturdy kid I don't fret over him falling nearly half as much as I do with Kaito.
I'm really worried about Seren getting a body though (he's a CP Lu-Wen Vampire) because I am terrified that he will fall and chip his little pointy ears! Hell, I'm scared now that he will roll from somewhere and do that lol.

    16. I'm still stuck in the scared phase

    17. Well, only recently happened to me that one of my boys, when I turned my back on him, collapsed in a heap. Literally. I'm kinda used to them falling over, by now, even outside and as long as it's not on solid rock, they won't take any damage (except for getting dirty). So I just was like: "Gee, if you need restringing, why don't you say so ..." Which, I think, he actually did ... *gg*

    18. When I first got Hyacinth, I would dress him every morning. Then every night I would take his clothes off and take about... I don't know, a half an hour to meticulously check every single part of his body for stains and clean him.

Now... I'll just clean him when I think he's dirty. Visibly. It doesn't bother me as much.

    19. No. After 3.5 years, I still refuse to even really try posing them for fear of accidents. Staining is something I worry less about, though, since Magic Eraser works so well. I'm amazed when I see pictures people have of several dolls standing at once. I always think, "What if one falls and starts a domino effect?" I'm usually too worried to even get a picture of one standing.

    20. The only "Argh!" experience I've had was for my sister's doll, a pukifee Ante. She seemed to leap out of my sisters arms and fall down our rock steps. Her face plate rocketed off of her and landed three or so feet away and my sister was to worried to pick her up herself.
Thankfully there was only rock dust on her, no scratches or other damage.

I'm not incredibly worried as I know I can replace most things to some degree.
