Getting more used to accidents?

Sep 18, 2007

    1. I haven't had any bad accidents yet, no broken fingers, dents, or scratches, and I'm not really worried.
      I figure it's going to happen eventually and when it does I'll fix the problem and move on. That said I don't do anything to invite accidents, I don't leave them standing when I'm not there and I store them where they can't fall.

    2. I have had chipped nose and broken ear on one doll both things were successfully fixed by me with modding. All my others have no damage so far (knock on resin). I am only paranoid when I stand my dolls on concrete, stone or hard wood floors. Carpet usually saves the day. A simple face plant into the sofa is no big deal (face ups are sealed well). At meets I am cautious sitting my dolls rather than standing them. If I stand them I am right by them. And honing my reflexes for mine and other dolls, actually our group is really good at keeping an eye out for tipping dollies and are quick to save them from ever touching the ground.

    3. I also haven't had any disastrous accidents, like chips and breaks. But, when my doll falls or something, I do try to catch her, but I'm not devastated if I don't get there in time. I know that somewhere, somehow, someone out there could fix my doll by mods or something, or at least get them back to something presentable. :3

    4. I agree that you get used to them.
      Once I learned to handle my Resinsoul girl, poof! No problems. (I've never even restrung her; she's floppy like a rag doll but she'll stand on rocks and climb trees without even swaying <3 )
      I am a bit...obsessed? Or overly familiar, maybe...I now have two RS MSDs, and they make different sounds. I can tell with my back turned, if one of them is going to fall, which one it will be.

      We just replaced our carpets with hardwood, though, so now I'm paranoid all over again. ^.^;

    5. I never worried too much about it. Julians face-up is no issue, as he came blank and I did it myself anyways.

      Regarding falls: Except when taking pics, I always lay him on his back or sit him on the sofa. I already made expierences with my self-made BJD, I learned a lot from this doll. Thus I was already very careful when Julian arrived.

      However, I know that resin can break, so I try to be as careful as I can. I do not hide him all the time, just try to make sure he is in a "resin-safe" position whenever I leave him unattended.

    6. I'm terrified of breaking my puki's faceup. Her body is no big deal, but every time she faceplants somewhere (which is fairly often, as I like to rest her in the corner of my laptop's keyboard when I'm playing video games) I squeak and flail.

      My two MSD-sized girls on the other hand, I'm not worried about. Any cracks or chips can be patched up somehow, and poor Ama needs a new faceup anyway. My boything on the other hand flips out whenever someone falls over. "Those are expensive! Don't break those!" ^^;

    7. As a newbie (6ms owning dolls) I'm still terrified lol - posing them still scares me a bit but I am getting used to resin being tougher than I thought, although the other day my Elfdoll Euna decided to flake out on me and headbutted the door - I had a heartattack but luckily I had a thick curtain thrown over the door to act as a backdrop for pics so it cushioned the blow ... I'll probably panic like a mad woman when the weather gets better and I decide to brave an outdoor photoshoot lol :lol:

    8. I really lost a lot of fear when the back of my girl's knee cap broke.

      When it happened, I panicked and raced to the emergency forum. I was so terrified that I had to have my father come over and read the posts because I suddenly forgot what words were. Luckily, my family is really into models and car repairs. He knew exactly what type of epoxy to buy (Devcon 2-ton clear, LONG cure time. The "quick" version dries more yellow than clear) and where I should go to get the really high grit sandpaper I needed to fix her.

      The first time I repaired her, I sanded too much of the expoy away and the knee recracked right after I restrung her. This time, I simply frowned and went back to work.

      While it still makes my heart skip when she falls on her face (I can't fix a face-up yet), I'm getting more confident about major repairs like cracks.

    9. It's got to do with getting used to what the dolls can handle and how sturdy they are. At least it's like that for me. Everytime I got a new doll I had to spend time with her/him, getting used to her/his posing abilities and what I have to be careful about. It's not like I let my dolls fall face-forward to the ground, though. But I don't go pale with shock anymore. ^^;

    10. The worst fall my dolls have ever endured was my Heliot falling off the top of a 2 meter bookcase D: I had sat him up and out of the road while I was cleaning and must not have sat him down right. He fell and his Sphaler claws smacked the shelf, taking a tip off the end of one claw. Initially I was angry at myself but now I'm looking forward to modding his claw tip. In a way, I'm surprised he didn't take more damage! Two meters is a long drop and he even had his master hands on.

    11. when there is an accident I freak out like no other. however I have never been very careful with them :sweat "oh you stand like a rock? good, I'll go get a drink, BRB" and smaller things like touching their faceup... ever since I got my dolls, the first thing I did was testing their limits.
      but y'know, I think the only times one of my doll ever fell on the floor was when I had it sit somewhere close of my mom and she knocked it down <.< the other times my dolls tryed to fall I was always arround and I have ninja skills when it comes to catch my dolls xD

    12. I used to freak out and now I.........still freak out.

    13. Not quite.
      The first time that Nadeko fell it was off of a table at a convention in a crowded room, both her wig and headcap flew off and I wanted to cry, scream and hit someone with a chair all at the same time. Thankfully she was totally fine, not a single scratch, dent or any other damage but I literally did not put her down for anything the entire rest of the day. The next 2 times she fell were not any less panic-inducing.
      I guess now that I've had her for a while that I freak out internally more often as opposed to externally but I still have a heart attack of the same intensity I would have had the day I got her. But I'm no longer phased by taking off her hands/feet/headcap, her wig flying off or minor staining and things like that, I still don't like to take off her head but I can do it without too much panicking now.

    14. Poor falling dolls...
      I totally agree with getting used to it. I clearly noticed it yesterday.
      During my first year as owner I had only a doll and I think she managed to fall to the ground 2-3 times, not from a great heigh but into hardwoods and exterior grounds. When this little accidents happened, I couldn't talk or even breath and I actually cried the first time it happened. Fortunately nothing really bad happened, only a chip in her make-up.
      I have had really bad times while restringing them too and accidentally making scratchs to them.
      But yesterday, 4 years after when I was photographing my latest doll in the gardens of the university, she fell from a 50cm tall rock with her face to the ground and I just went to get her, checked if something has happened, then tried to get the picture right.

    15. Same with me. I'm super careful. I don't set my dolls anywhere they can fall from. I've invested too much time and money to be cavalier about it yet.

    16. My feeple65 loses an arm everytime I handle her and my Saintbloom seems to end up on the floor regularly. Fairyland resin must be engineered to last because she doesn't have a single scratch. My Saintbloom on the other hand has had a bit of her back head broken, luckily it was easy to fix. 5th Motif's pure resin seems quite soft and there are a few dents in his elbows. I am getting a bit fatalistic about these mishaps. I don't expect my dolls to go through 'life' unscathed anymore. I am viewing these accidents the same I view small scars: just things which give each doll a personal history.

    17. Three of my elves have had broken ears, and two of them arrived that way in transit. I've actually come to anticipate it. The only time I've ever panicked over breakage was this summer, when my Noble Dolls Rhubarbe threw her faceplate off, and her ear snapped. I sought the missing piece for an hour. It was a terrible end to a bad day.

      I've had some dreadfully obstinate dolls though. My first had a habit of untwisting his elastic and throwing his head off. He set a record of three and a half feet. I do get a rush when someone falls a fair distance, or faceplants into the cabinet wall. But thankfully my number of actual breakages are low. As Starlight_Mask says, tipsy dolls make for outstanding improvement in reflex performance. You learn to balance them; understand their weak points and weights. But you also keep a hand ready just in case.

    18. Yes, but in my case a lot of it has been increased confidence that I can deal with/repair the worst-case scenario.

      ... as an example, I barely reacted when one of my dolls fell about five feet onto concrete at a doll meet (actually came out of that unscathed incidentally, even the glued on piercings).

    19. I think I relaxed a little when I found out about epoxy putty but I still worry a lot about hands. I don't like broken fingers. It's a thing...

    20. I still worry about accidents, but not as much as I used to. I've only experienced some fantasy parts blushing that has chipped while posing them, but that's pretty normal.
