Gift items: Should they be sold?

Apr 29, 2007

    1. I don't really understand why someone would sell something they won. I mean, to win means you have to enter something, like a competition. So why go to all the hasstle of entering if you are only going to sell the product? I mean, the chances of actually winning a doll is something like 'once in a blue moon', whereas with a promo all you have to do is spend over a certain amount.

If I WON something - I woulnd't sell it. Maybe that's just because I have never won anything in my life tho. Why sell the evidence that I have a magical fairy that hoovers over my head with magic winning fairy dust...

    2. I'm not sure, but I *think* the tenshi are handed out randomly to those who bought tickets to get into the Dolpa itself, I'm not certain there is any extra entering... but then, I've never been to a Dolpa! :sweat

I would love to win a little tenshi...! :fangirl:

    3. Is it ethical to sell gift items, like free event heads, or free dolls? What about a doll which comes with two heads?

Why wouldn't it be? If you get it, and you don't want it,you can sell it. It's yours. A doll that comes with two heads? If you don't want the extra head, again, sell it. I see nothing wrong with it.

Should the seller only sell the extra parts at the price the item would usually sell for, or accept higher amounts? Is this a concern for free gifts that are not dolls, such as clothing, and if not, why the double standard?

The seller can sell for whatever they want. It's up to the buyer to not buy if they think the price is too high. If they can't get it any other way, well, they need to decide if it's worth it. It would be nice if every one just sold everything for what it was worth, but hey, i saw a second hand MSD BBB for nearly 400$ on the marketplace. It's mostly up to the buyer to set the market price. You can't sell anything for a high price if no ones going to buy it.

What about someone who uses a free item to make something new, such as a complete doll out of a free head or a new outfit with a free clothing item?

Again, it's there's. They can do what they want with it. I mean, what would you expect someone to do with a free head if they're not going to sell it, but make a new doll. What about clothing? Unless it's a dress, you're going to make a "new outfit" with the free clothing.

    4. Well....why not?

It's a -gift- item. It's not necessarily something you asked for. You paid for and got the stuff you want, and if you didn't want the gift item....what are you doing to do, just leave it sitting around on your sofa for year after year?

The fact is that it's yours now, and you are legally allowed to do what you want with it. Doll companies don't make us sign contracts saying we won't resell their event heads, after all. :V

    5. Just keep in mind the Sei are sometimes bought from YJ that is how I got mine and they were not cheap.

Right these items are just going to gather dust we should charge them rent LOL....
No harm in moving out objects that aren't used and can be wanted elsewhere.

    6. I see no problem what so ever with selling "gifts" from companies. You bought the original doll & anything extra is your's to do with what you want.

As for the price, well you can ask anything you like but that doesn't mean you're going to get it. Realistically, it seems more practical to sell it for what a similar item would sell for. It's all what the market will bear though.

If you want to use the gift to make something else, well why not? It's certainly a good solution to using up extra heads & for clothing it gives you something more to mix & match with.

The only problem I have is selling actual gifts from a friend or aquaitence. I feel that those are rather special & want to keep them for the sentimental value but even then, I've sometimes sold them rather than having them sitting around collecting dust. If someone else can put them to good use it's better in a way. Still, I always feel a bit guilty doing that.

    7. I assume that people sell the gifts, it,s something very common, but I don,t likeat all the persons who try to increase the price to high levels

    8. If you own it, do whatever you want with it. If you got it for free and want to sell it, why not? If you don't need it but could do with some cash for something else, I don't see a reason not to.

When it comes to the price... as long as both the seller and the buyer are happy, everything is fine.

    9. I believe if something is given to you as a gift, you can really do what you want with it...

I mean, if I were given a gift head that didn't suit my tastes, I would want it to go onto someone else who WOULD enjoy it. And of course, no one's just going to randomly give a doll head away, you know?

    10. I think it's ethical to sell gift items, but there are many other things to consider. Without an original selling value, what exactly is it's actual worth? Do we consider these "limited"? Selling a gift item opens up a whole new can of worms. For each of these new questions, are these ethical, per say? What would be scalping for a gift item? Is selling a gift item in general just a money making scheme? Does that matter? Again, another can of worms.

    11. Like everything else, its "actual worth" is what somebody else who wants it is willing to pay.

    12. I think it's perfectly acceptable. As my economic teacher preached: "There is no such thing as a free lunch". While the item may be "free" chances are you paid for it in some shape or form. If you don't like the free item, sell it to someone who does. They'll be much happier to receive it.

Now, is it ethical to order an item specifically to resell it at a higher price? No, I don't feel that's right.

    13. Once you give a gift, it is the receivers right to do what they want with it. Extra doll parts are yours to sell or do whatever you want. You paid for it and if you find a willing buyer that is your business.

    14. If it's a totally free gift from a friend or something I don't think you should sell it.
On the other hand, if you received a gift when purchasing a doll/wig/etc I think it's OK to sell it for what it's worth.
After all you did spend the money in the first place and it's your gift to do with as you please.

From what I understand there is a lot of controversy about event heads and give away dolls, but I'm not familiar enough with that sort of thing o make an assessment ^^:

    15. Mainstream "Gifts" from companies such as a free pair of pants or a wig is a type of sales ploy. Who doesn't like free gifts? That warm/fuzzy feeling receiving it out of random, makes most people, I would think, feel good. In fact, I think people are paying for them. It's part of the money that the company generates from selling their dolls to their customers. If they make a lot of profit or low profit, they create these event items like a free wig or whatever to entice people to buy. So I don't really see what's wrong with people selling event gifts. What I have said above pertains to certain companies, not all, I think.

Now gifts, from friends and family are different because it's not about a company trying to profit but about (most cases) the genuine feeling of giving. I'm not so sure about this, so to each to their own.

About Sei/Rei Tenshis, I'm not sure about this either. If times are tough and you have to sell it to keep you afloat, I see why not. However, it's unscrupulous behavior from some that turns me off. How do I know that you didn't buy it off of Yahoo Japan? Perhaps you won the doll at an event and lie in your sales post about winning on YJ for a high price and thus justifying that huge markup. It's the lying part that is unscrupulous not the high markup.

    16. I think it's perfectly ethical to sell anything owned, as long as others are willing to buy. If I win something at a raffle that was a prize I didn't really want in the first place, depending on what it is, of course, I'll either sell it or give it away.

As far as selling free clothing, while I haven't yet, I wouldn't hesitate to do so if I wasn't going to use it. I have received free shoes and wig from a doll company before, but I still use the shoes, and so haven't sold it. I have, however, sold the wig to a friend, since it fit her doll, and I can't imagine any of mine wearing said wig.

As far as creating a new doll from parts, why not? I've done that before, and while I can see the use of having multiple heads for one doll (i.e., I have a sleeping head and regular head for one of my tinies), if you don't think you could use both heads for the same doll, why not buy a body and make two dolls out of one?

As far as personal gifts, I am always very reluctant to sell these, or even give them away, especially if they were very personalised. However, I have given away personal gifts in the past, just to minimize the "stuff" I have around the house.

As far as price gouging, if there's not someone willing to pay that price, it won't sell. I don't see anything unethical about price gouging. I can see why people wouldn't LIKE it, especially for LE dolls, but in the end, the seller has to make the choice of if s/he wants to sell the doll quickly, or for a high price. With a high enough price, the doll won't sell at all, so the seller's own greed will get the better of the person.

    17. I've received free gifts and trinkets from companies. If I don't like them, I just re-gift them in items people buy from me. :) I think it's a nice surprise to give, and that person may have more use for the item than I do. I also think it's perfectly acceptable to sell items received as gifts from companies, to create a new doll from free parts, and create a new outfit from free pieces of clothing. I have a hard time figuring out why all of that should be unacceptable! As far as the amount to sell the free item for, you can try any amount you like, just remember that no one has to buy it from you. ;) You don't choose the price in the end.

    18. If it's something that I know I wouldn't be able to use, then probably. I don't usually like to keep things that I won't have any use for or that will be sitting in my closet in a box for months so I don't see any point in keeping them. But if it were an extra head, I would either sell it or if I really liked it, get a body for it and if at some point I don't want the doll, sell it as a whole doll. But like I said, it depends if I like it or not.

    19. Selling a gift item you have no use for shouldn't be a problem, so long as you don't charge more than what you would pay for the item when buying from the company.

    20. Call me cynical, but I tend to think of event heads less as gifts, and more as invitations from the doll company to spend more money - after all, a head needs a body to go with it, and the body is the most expensive part of the doll. It's a bit like a clothing company sending you a left shoe as a gift - however beautiful it is, it's no good to you unless you spend more money to buy the right shoe as well!
