Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Gift items: Should they be sold?

Apr 29, 2007

    1. I don't have a problem with it, i have a problem with people who spend a certain amount/buy a certain doll just in order to get the gift to sell on later.

    2. Regardless of how they got the item (well, so long as it was obtained legally) I feel a person is entitled to sell any material possession they own.

If they have a gift item that was given to them for free for whatever reason, and it has any value to it, they are entitled to sell it as they see fit.

I think it would be rather unethical to attempt to inflate its value, but the option of whether it is worth its asking price is really up to the buyer. If someone offers a higher offer than its value in an auction setting, as mentioned, that is purely at the discretion of the bidder/buyer and is not an ethical issue for the seller to be too concerned with.

    3. Once a gift is given, the person who receives it has a right to do what he or
she wants with it: keep it, sell it, give it away, put it in a closet or throw it
away. So, if it is something you can't use, it is better to sell it or give
to someone who will appreciate it.:)

    4. I suppose the thing is that the "gift" items from companies are really just promotional items - Would you debate the ethics of selling on a toy from a Happy Meal, or one of the little free Ferarris you get with Shell petrol?

    5. Ratty, no.
People actually collect the happy meal toys and are willing to pay for them.
If you own something, you have the RIGHT to sell it regardless of how you obtained it or how much it cost you to obtain, so long as it was legal.

    6. Exactly :D

...And I always find it odd how much people are willing to pay for those as well.

    7. Yeah, seriously!
      It blows my mind too!
I actually have a bag full here I'm going to throw up on ebay soon. lol:lol:

    8. If it was a gift item that came with an item you paid for, go for it.

If it was a birthday gift or something, it depends on who gave it to you I suppose.

    9. i think gift item should be stay as gift. becuase then they have a value to it. free gift can be anything i mostly prefer it to be clothing. so then i wont have extra head or something like....

    10. I think if your willing to part with it,
And there willing to buy it,
then its you business to sell or not.
I would in no way feel morel wrong, in selling a gift
(Even if I had to pay nothing)
      from a company,
Although with people its kinda different

    11. If a friend gave you the gift, then you should keep it.
If it was a promo item, do what you will.

I would be insulted if someone sold a present I gave them...unless it was absolutely necessary they sold it.

    12. I don't think its unethical to sell a gift, as long as you aren't exploiting someone in the process, keep it fair and there shouldn't be an issue. I personally wouldn't sell something I received, unless I already had one and even then it would just be to give someone else the same opportunity.. If that makes any sense.

    13. no one forces anyone to buy anything. so if it's worth it to the buyer, why not?

however, it would be awesome to maybe sell it at a lower than average price. *shrugs*

    14. I don't have a problem with it if we are talking a company promo item, like a head. I mean, you have to get a body for it right? And what if you don't like the mold? I didn't order during the event to get the head, but for a discounted price.
In fact, I sold my Tender Lahoo head to someone this week. I did however let them have it lower then it was worth, because I did get it as a gift though. :3

    15. I don't have any issue at all with someone wanting to sell something they received as a gift, be it from a doll company, or even a friend who sends them some sort of gift. The latter can be a little more tricky. But seriously, it's theirs and if they don't love it or need it, I would think they would want it to go to someone who does love it or does need it.

A while back, a friend of mine had bought me a doll. It wasn't an extremely expensive doll or anything, ($90 or so) but it was still a big gift. I always go back and forth on whether I have $$$ or not because I'm a stay at home mom, so when I wanted to trade her for a doll to customize and raffle for Komen, I asked the girl who sold her to me if she minded me trading her off. She was very kind, and I was lucky to have a friend like that.

That being said, I do think that some people would have had a problem with my doing what I did. But that's where you really see whether or not your friends really care about you. :D

    16. I dont see a problem with selling the gift heads. Usually you pay a little extra anyway. It's yours so you have the choice then to sell or not.

    17. If you no longer desire the gift, yes.
If you don't want it why should you have to keep it? O.o
But, as long as people don't get too greedy, because after-all, they didn't pay for it.

    18. IMO, it would depend what the gift was, whether it was classified as a gift, and what I could do with the gift.

If it was something that I had recieved due to a promotion then I would have no hesitations in selling it because I knew that I was going to recieved something I could or coulnd't use. I just purchased a bundle of clothes from Dollmore and recieved the free glass eyes. Im always in on the look out for eyes but the ones I recieved were red. Now, I know that I will not ever use these eyes for any of my current dolls means that the eyes are just going to be sitting in my drawer. Why keep something I am not going to use when I can sell it to someone who can make use of it? Same goes for a head. If I have no use for it, I see no reason to keep a hold of it.

Now, if this gift was something that I was not expecting at all then I would not sell, i.e. from a seller here or off ebay. The main reason I wouldn't is because that person has given me something from their own collection, so IMO that holds more value that something from a company. Companies gain from promotions because it draws in more customers wereas sellers don't gain from giving away their own belongings.

One last thing. I think I must have misunderstood the whole using a promotional head to create another doll. I mean - isn't that the reason for having a head? You put it on a body and volla - instant doll! I must be having a stupid moment here because I really cannot see the harm in this ... it just seems like common sense TBH. If someone wants to clear that this bit up then be my guest, because it's gone WAY over my head lol. Surely I can't be as simple as I think it is :)

So yeah ... that's just my own personal opinions on this. Long rant over with...

    19. I can't believe people are happy to sell Sei and Rei Tenshi dolls from Volks. If I was lucky enough to win one nothing on this earth would get me to sell it. Not everyone who goes to Dolpa gets Seis and Reis, so it's a very, very special gift if you do get one and I see it purely as profiteering if you do try and sell one, since none of them seem to go for less than $1000 and you happened to get yours for free! Volks also looks down on people buying and selling Seis and Reis since they are supposed to be a gift not bought and sold!

Other than that though, do what you will. Free heads, eyes, wigs and clothes are all fair game.

    20. If it's gift head, eyes, wig or clothes, and it's something you don't need (not even in the future), it's fair to sell.
