has your taste / style changed since you started this hobby?

Mar 22, 2013

    1. I have changed my taste in dolls 100%. I started out being into boy dolls and j-rock fashion, but as the years passed by I sold off the boy dolls and bought girl dolls instead. I'm not 100% done with boy dolls, but they're definitely not as androgynous anymore.
I also don't really have a huge interest in j-rockish/punkish style anymore. As I grew older I got sick and tired of it. I'm much more into pretty, classy outfits now, but I do have characters that fall outside my own preference.

    2. It really has. Before I actually thought resin was a waste of time but then I kept seeing sculpts I really liked and suddenly my OT Obitsu's just...Weren't enough anymore..Now I have an MSD And I can say whilst I won't sell any of my current crew they won't be getting in on swaps anymore. XD
And now I want a Yo-SD but we'll see...We'll see..My tastes really do change and I browse Ebay a lot.

    3. what taste / styles did you start with when you entered the hobby?
I started in 2004. I've always like many different styles:
      fantasy
      punk/goth
      historical
      formal

      how has that changed?
not really... it may have expanded a bit more because I will see different styles by different designers and fall in love with them... but I still like my original styles.

what styles taste currently appeals to you now?
      Same as above...
      also added to likes--
      some cosplay/anime
      some visual kei
      some cross-dress
non-asian/american styles (val zeitler, marbled halls)

    4. My tastes in the hobby are still very much the same. I'm partial to fantasy, animals, cute and fairytale themed dolls today like I was when I first joined. That's something I honestly can't see changing too drastically either, because those are themes I have been drawn to ever since I was a child. They aren't really a phase per say, but a part of me. One that I hold dearly to my heart. No matter what I get into, I always gravitated towards those themes. It has been that way for more years than both my hands can count.

    5. Mine definitely has, and I've only been collecting for a few years. I began with anime-style BJDs, I was convinced I'd only ever collect Dollfie Dreams. Now, I'm not a huge fan of the Dollfie Dream I do have, and I have no plans of buying another again. I love the realistic look of the resin BJDs I collect now.

    6. yes and no... technically I just started since my first doll came in Feb. but I wanted to get into it 6 years ago when I went to a doll panel at a con but life got in the way untill now. Back then I was sucked in by Dream of Doll and Tender Shal, Sha, Camine (this is a grail doll for me now LOL), and Homme Ducan. Tender Shal and that rediculous 'nun' outfit was just .... what can I say everything about her called to me. As yet she is the only female doll I still like... but I was into the male dolls mostly. NOW I am still into male dolls but have gravitated to more mature types AND bigger dolls. I had liked the msd but now I want the 70+ sizes... so more like my origina like has sort of refined. And I want to have male and female pairs...

    7. I don't think my tastes have changed very much. It has always been practicality first, then design when it comes to clothing and shoes and wigs e.g. if I'm buying a wig for my first girl, it should also fit my second girl, or my boy could wear it too. I'm also very partial to 1/4 dolls, rather than 1/3 (beautiful -gasp- but a little too hot for me to handle!), and having all my dolls at 1/4 MSD size... so they could share all their stuff. Practicality again I guess ^^;.

Would love to still own a 1/6 one day but it means I'll need an entire wardrobe to clothe one.

    8. Definitly yes! I realized that at first I used to like the big head/eyes dolls, and the fantasy ones, but those wich only have fangs and pointy ears. Actually I think as the hobby has change, I mean, now there are more selection of dolls, my tastes were changing gradually with it. At present I like more realistic ones, still love fantasy dolls though, but these have changed too.
Also say, I have characters, so I want to find the ones which are going to fit them. On the other hand, sometimes If I see a doll I really like, a character comes to my mind instantly xD
That doesn't mean that I don't like the first ones I said. What's more, my current BJD is a Breakaway, one of my first beloved dolls...It's just I like less molds than before.

    9. I've been in the hobby about 3 years and I think my 'style' has definitely not changed. I still prefer modern-style clothing on my dolls and I prefer more mature looking dolls, the same as I did back when I first got into it.

I wouldn't say that my tastes have changed a lot, either. I'd be more inclined to say that I've 'discovered myself'. My first doll was an SD boy, my second was a tiny and my third was an MSD. I quickly realized that I don't really like SD size dolls as much as I like MSD size, and now my collection is mainly MSD with a few tinies. When I first got into the hobby, I really had no idea what my 'tastes' were, because I had no real experience, so I just picked a doll I thought I'd like. It didn't take long to learn what I really do like, and not much has changed since I figured that out.

    10. My taste has changed since I started this hobby! I used to prefer quite realistic scuplts and features that were in proportion to each other somewhat but now the dolls I am interested in are less realistic and have the biggest eyes. They're just adorable!

    11. Well I don't have a doll yet but I went from realistic to Anime face. The only realistic doll company I like now is iplehouse.

    12. Definitely! I originally only wanted really cute girls and fantasy-style clothing. Now, I've changed to more mature girls and casual looks! I love where it's gone. :D

    13. Initially I adored Crobidoll and Ringdoll since they were the earliest bjd companies I discovered. I loved their mysterious face-ups. Then I wandered into the more natural-looking face-ups territory of Ariadoll and Oasisdoll. Later, I realised I prefer more realistic dolls like that of Iplehouse. Maybe because I kept delaying the actual purchase of a doll my preference kept wandering (and I'm quite content that I allowed myself a 'discovery period' as I didn't buy a doll that I'll regret when my taste changes since the bjd world is a really enormous one worth exploring and researching on). As I have OCD, I would rather collect dolls that have a similar aesthetic than assemble a motley crew, so that really limits my wish-list. Now I'm looking forward to the release of Pulkidolls.

    14. When I first got into BJDs, I wanted a LOT of DOD dolls... Now I prefer migidoll and Iplehouse. So, yes. My tastes have changed quite a bit! (though I did ALWAYS adore migidoll Ryu!)

    15. me too! DoD Camine to IH Dexter.... bit of a change up I'd have to admit lol... now I need to go check out migdoll.. I hate seeing new company names that prompt me to end up wanting even more dolls ;P ... .......................

    16. I think mine have changed some as well--especially lately. While I still love anime/less realistic faces, I've added more realistic sculpts to my collection as well, with a wider variety of sizes and body shapes. I'm also not afraid of a hybrid here and there.

And I've changed from Alice in Wonderland, Lolita and huge Rococo and historical fashions to a more contemporary style--some casual and some formal--that can be mixed and matched. I like the versatility, and how much less fussy they are; it seems they are much easier display and store. :)

    17. Um, yes in some ways and no in others. Yes because I've always had a preference for SD that are ... I guess a little more stylized(not totally realistic but not overly cartoon-y either)? That hasn't changed since I've gotten into the hobby. No because I have noticed a shift in my taste in doll bodies though. I mean, I still prefer the more realistic doll bodies, but I'm starting to like the more stylized, artsy bodies too. Doll-Chateau converted me.

    18. My dolls style hasn't changed too much, other than I always thought i would have more boys than girls but my crew is pretty even~

    19. I don't think my tastes have changed so much that more dolls are now available that I am interested in. I don't like androgynous looking boys or the anime aesthetic so initially I felt my selections were a bit more limited. Now I see more and more companies catering to the more masculine-looking man/realistic proportions type of thing. Not that there's anything wrong with androgyny or anime style, it's just not my thing (though I do have an Obitsu and I adore her, but she's a special case!).

    20. what taste / styles did you start with when you entered the hobby?
It's going on 10/11 years since the pretty boy/must have everything be black and goth thing started for me. I kind of blame Dir en grey for my pretty boy obsession but that's another day and another forum.. (j-rock and visual kei isn't really exciting for me anymore, though. I like the clothes to some degree but it doesn't do a lot for me these days.) After seeing a bjd for the first time and how customizable they were, it was love. Honestly I had no idea how big they were, really, but SDs were the ones I was always drawn to thanks to deviantart and related sites. (...I assumed they were the size of barbies, for some reason @_@) I actually entered the hobby for real about 10 months ago and bought a Littlefee and dressed him in Dollheart clothes since I was very intimidated by the size of SDs (and the cost). But either way, I really wanted all my dolls to be DARK N EMO because that's how I rolled as a teenager.

      how has that changed?
After having my Littlefee for a while I discovered that..... there are bigger dolls that I fell in love with that cost nearly as much as that little guy and were exactly the type of doll I wanted initially. (My Delf Claus, for example. He's a specific character of mine that is a desert prince so he doesn't wear dark things, usually.) Then I discovered the MSD size. I figured well, my Littlefee is x tall, so an MSD is about... this much taller. So it's not that big of a deal. MSD worked for me to a degree. I ordered my KDF Bory and ended up acquiring a KDF Aru... had two other MSDs but I didn't like them as much and ended up selling them too. The ballpark changed yet again when I saw Delf Claus for the first time. It was one of those love at first sight moments.. I didn't care how big he was because I knew I had to have him.. and he's versatile enough to make super girly. >w< I must say now... I prefer Delf sized dolls to any other.

what styles taste currently appeals to you now?
I still very much prefer girly boy dolls but I also have a girl doll (who's glaring at me for not buying her girl clothes.. .w. ). I'm kind of hesitant to leave dark clothes on any of my dolls so their lounging outfits are light colored... :sweat I'm more about characters now for them, though. Instead of wanting all of them to look the same, I let their sculpts define them for clothing and stuff. Gabe's my emo kid, Roxy's my cute kid, Ashera's my desert prince, and Lyra's an unintentional tomboy.... for now. .-. And for my two incoming boys... Juhl's going to be a forest sprite and Noel's going to be a punk rocker of sorts.
