Have you ever kept the Sculpt Name as your Doll's Name?

Oct 28, 2009

    1. I like coming up with a name. It's part of the fun of getting a new doll. :)

I chose to rename my Yaoyue not only for that reason though. The name "Yaoyue" means Jade according to Oasisdoll. I don't even know if I'm pronouncing it right when people ask what sculpt she is. xD I like the name Jade, but I was/am considering naming a doll Diamond or Crystal in the future. I don't want two gemstone-ish named dolls unless they're siblings. I chose to rename my Iriya because I have no idea what it means. It sounds pretty, but I didn't think it would suit the doll's intended look.

    2. I've struggled with this same problem renaming my IH Lahela.
She has the company faceup and all I ever see when I look at her is "Lahela"
I'm trying to find her a wig that will change her character but so far, no luck.
Maybe the right wig will bring out a new persona and a new name.
I think for me it would be much easier to rename a doll if the face up wasn't default.

    3. I definitely would use the sculpt name for some but change for others. I've used sculpt names for other types of dolls (non BJD). I'm the worst at thinking up names. :( My ABJD Zoey, kept her sculpt name.
However, my first big BJD was Dollzone Stramonium, which is a bit long. So I've named her Star. I thought about Azure Star. She's so pretty :D

    4. I keep their default names..

    5. I view the sculpt to just be a model type. When I think of it, I think of a car. My car is an Oldsmobile Intrigue, but her name is Guzzy. I feel its the same with dolls. My doll is a Bobobie Espree, but although Espree is a nice name, it just defines WHAT doll she is, not who she is.

    6. I would never keep a sculpt name for my BJDs... I just think it's more personal to give them their own name! I usually use their sculpt name before I've picked out a name for them (which can take a long time, I'm quite indecisive about naming)!

    7. I keep the name for those whom I do not have a character for yet when I order them, or for those I really like the name of. So Cookie is just Cookie because I bought her on a whim and didn't know what she was like yet (she was my first, a year ago, little did my husband know this was not just a one-off thing....). Now it just suits her. Same goes for Leira, but I happen to like the name and it fits the character I developed for her, so that was an easy decision to make. Fay is Fay because really nothing else seems to fit her. Even though I'm not actually that fond of the name, I tried some others and it just didn't work. Bella will be Bella after she arrives, because I've always liked the name and I think it suits her.
But with Sahara and Damian it's different: I chose the molds to fit the characters, so they actually had names before they had faces. My next buy will probably be an LF Ante and I love that sculpt but hate the name, so she'll definitely be getting another one as soon as I've developed her character a bit more.

Edit: Ante will be named Miya as soon as she arrives (on order, yay!), I think it really fits her sweet character. My AS Cinderella's name will be Midori and my Dikadoll Rena's name'll be Evelyn. Both chosen because I didn't like the sculpt names, not so much because of their characters.

    8. Most of my dolls have their own names distinct from their sculpt name ... and then there's Rowan, my Angell-Studio Rone... formally known as Nisroc. I loved my original name for him but kept slipping into refering to him as "Rone"... so I ended up re-naming him to Rowan so that it wasn't such a jump from his sculpt name that suits him so well. As it is, I'm still not so sure of Rowan as a name for him and think I still prefer Rone but I'm yet to come up with an original name that just sticks / suits him perfectly. I just can't mentally resign myself to only calling him by his sculpt name. Strangely I feel if I did it would be almost as though I didn't care enough to try to personalise him / was being unfair to him.

19th Nov ~ On a side note, although I still hadn't been sure about Rowan as the name for my Rone previously, as soon as I put him side-by-side with Eleanor, my Feeple65 Chloe I suddenly found the name fits him perfectly. Rowan and Eleanor make a great couple, both in name and in person.

    9. I renamed my first three ( Tabby because I really didn't want to name her Lami since I already have a toy named that, Toreth just because I wanted to pick a springy name for her seeing as she arrived day before Easter, and Leo's real name is awkward to pronounce,) but I am seriously tempted to keep Mirwen's stock name! It's so pretty! :) But picking the name helps me bond with dolls so I think I will rename her.

    10. I recently bought Roke from Fairyland. For the entire time he's been on my "wish list," I've been calling him my "Dragon Boy." Now that he's on his way home, I'm calling him Roke. It just seems sort of fitting. I'll see how I feel when he's here, but for now it's sort of set in my mind.

    11. I've gotten so used to referring to my doll as "Annie" because of her sculpt name that even though I intend to change her name when she comes, I'll probably slip up sometimes and still call her Annie anyway. u.u I've seriously considered a name similar to Annie so that the adjustment will be easier! Haha. As for my incoming Lusis floating head, her name is going to be completely different because I don't feel any attachment to the sculpt name. I guess it depends on which dolls really seem to settle into their sculpt names. Some dolls definitely do I think!

    12. I haven't named my dolls from their sculpts, and I don't intend to... to me, it feels like naming a cat 'Cat.'

      Which is kinda cute.

      Hrm...

    13. I don't keep any of the sculpt names for my dolls, but I do tend to refer to them by their sculpt name when posting about them on DoA. Mostly just because it means that anyone reading will know exactly what sort of doll I'm talking about, without having to check my profile to decode the names into sculpts.

I did have a lot of trouble renaming my Soom Amber. Her sculpt name stuck from mid-2009 (when I bought her) all the way until early 2011 (when my Ai heads arrived home). Then I finally realised what her character was going to be in my doll narrative, and she got her own, non-sculpt name (Chimera).

I must say, though, that I don't really find it 'less' creative to keep the sculpt name. Making the choice to keep a name, to me, is just as creative as choosing to change it - it's just a different sort of creation (you are choosing to make the name already there fit the doll/character you have in your mind). It's just a different facet of the same creative process :)

    14. I don't name my dolls after their sculpt names, although they often fit them to a tee! but I force myself to rename them, haha. But what I do to shorten the annoying naming process, it's that I pick only names starting with the same letters as the sculpt's name. Like my pukifee Bonnie is named Bambi, and my CH Ange Ai Gaby is named Gemma. ♥

    15. I nearly adopted a Volks Nana a few weeks ago and, if I had, I would've kept her sculpt name because it seemed to suit her so well and I was so used to calling her "Nana" while I was deliberating. :)

    16. Some of the sculpt names really fit, so if that was the case, I would definitely keep the sculpt name. But in my case, 'Darjeeling' is kind of a weird name for my puki, so I opted to name her something else. Likewise, when I get my 'Pong', you can be sure I'm not going to be calling her that either.

    17. I have two that I kept the sculpt name and two that I named. My Iplehouse twins are still Tatiana and Tania, because for some reason it just seemed right for them to be Russian and have similar sounding names. I've actually always liked the name Tania anyways so that may have been part of the motivation for keeping them. Their back story evolved based around the names instead of getting the dolls to match the backstory of an existing character. At some point I would like to give them a last name, though I'll have to do some research first.

For Dinah, I didn't know what kind of sculpt she was when I bought her, and she's based on a manga character so it was easier to pick her name. I later found out that she's an Angel Studio Que limited edition, and even though she has the same face up and model, the pictures of her sculpt online seem like a different doll entirely. My latest doll Athena is an angel of dream hybrid that I bought blank so I wouldn't even know which part of her composite to name her after. She was actually supposed to be Dinah, but it took so long to get her and when she did come she had a broken head and they sent me the wrong replacement so she sorta just evolved into someone else.

    18. I always change the name of my dolls; I feel like the company name is just a label, like what Asche said about cars. Most of the time I'm looking for a doll that fits my characters, so that name is already thought up and I always ((most of the time)) know when a doll is just right for my character. If I get a doll that's not my character, I generally think of a name while I'm waiting for it to come. ((And they turn into my characters eventually as well. :3 ))

    19. I can't see myself keeping the sculpt name, honestly, unless it matches up with what I already had in mind for the doll/character. It would be an odd coincidence, though. There's nothing wrong with doing it if that's your thing, but I don't think it's for me. I find it more personal to name the doll, rather than to keep the sculpt doll. But, that's just my preference and line of thought.

    20. Mostly I rename my dolls, but I do have one, a Crobidoll Marcel whose name I'm keeping :). Marcel really suits him, I call him Mars for short, though and honestly...I may end up just changing it to Mars. We'll see (:

Also, this is sort of funny: I have a character rigionally based on a Crobidoll Haz whose name is Haz, so if I change him to another sculpt he'll be named after a Crobi Haz XD
