1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Have you ever kept the Sculpt Name as your Doll's Name?

Oct 28, 2009

    1. I would never keep the company name but I have troubles choosing one myself. My first doll doesn't have a name yet and I can't make up my mind... :doh

    2. Yeah, I had real trouble naming my first BJD because I'd been referring to her by her sculpt, YoYo, for so long. I want YoYo, I'm saving up for YoYo, YoYo has shipped, YoYo will be here soon...

Now she's here I couldn't bring myself to think up an entirely different name for her, it'd just be WEIRD. So I've gone for 'Yoh'. That way it's a nice reference to one of my favourite anime characters of all time, plus I don't have to re-train my brain to remember a wholly different name. It's middle ground ;)

I've already got plans to name WenWen 'Wendy' when I get around to ordering her, haha. I think the trick if you want to rename a doll is to think of the new name ASAP before you even order the doll, and that way you don't get used to referring to them by the sculpt name.

    3. I also refer to the doll by the sculpt name until I find a name that suits them. I don't think I'd ever keep the sculpt name as a final name though. But never say never.

    4. I never once considered keeping the name for my resinsoul Yao. Yao just never suited her at all. She is my Storm. Now my Soom Sard is another matter. I thought for sure I'd change his name too, but Sard has just stuck. I've tried other names but I look at him and it's like nope. This is his name.

    5. Mine are all renamed except for my Obitsu 55cm doll. She is the Luna sculpt so until her name hits me she is still Luna.

    6. A year later...and Emily #4 is named Emily. I got her with the original release fullset, so it seemed appropriate. :XD:

    7. I don't think I'd ever keep the sculpt name, mostly because I adore giving names to things. This has spread to my flatmate, so now every pot and pan in our kitchen has a name (they're all named after celebrity chefs). It works really well in terms of being able to communicate precisely what we want :P Then again, it may be that I'll get a doll one day and their sculpt name just has to be their name.

    8. I have to admit, it's kinda confusing me i like to choose names for my dolls and some of them are charachters that had been created before buying the doll it self so the name was already there, but sculpt original names are usually strong and sticks, mainly also because whenever you wanna talk about your doll or introduce itto someone, you eventually have to mention the sculpt name, so all my dolls are having two names, names I gave them and the original company names :D

    9. All of mine so far have gotten other names, but I'm waiting on one (that may or may not be OT for the board) that I'm about 50-50 on keeping the sculpt name for. It strikes me as so hilariously out-of-place (Larry) that it's actually perfect.

    10. I name pretty much everything. My computers and my robots at work (I work in a factory) have all got nicknames. So naturally, I name my dolls, too. Of course, my friends don't always know the names I've given them, so I can still switch back to calling them by their sculpts if I need to.

For me it's sort of like in Pokemon. This is my x, but its name is y. (This is my Bory, his name is Arion, for example.)

    11. I'm usually a "name every thing" kind of person, my cars, computers, printers etc. all have had nicknames. So, of course, all my dolls have their own name. But there's always an exception. The Impldoll Sam I'm paying off currently will stay Sam, because it was the name that first got me to compare the little centaur with my OC Sam (not originally a centaur).

    12. So far they have all gotten the own names. Though my Soom Nyer was named Nyx, so her name didn't change much. If their sculpt name works for what I want then I will keep. It just depends on the doll, but so far I do plan I keep a sculpt name.

    13. Until recently I haven't named any of my dolls after their sculpt name, but recently I got a DHS Chibi Feilene, and well... She's just called Feilene, because I think the name suit her so well n_n

    14. I hope, somewhere in the future, to get both DC Bella and Souldoll Bonnie, with the intention of them being best friends. They are names I like quite a bit, I think they suit the sculpts and, of course, they sound kind of adorable together. Bella and Bonnie. So I definitely plan on keeping their sculpt names when I get them.
I suspect they'll be the exception rather than the rule though.
I worried at first that I was just being uncreative and lazy, but really they just work, why fix what's not broken right?

    15. I tend to give them a new name, and until I find it I use their sculpt names. But I would not have an issue keeping their sculpt names either if I think it fits.

    16. Previously, I couldn't understand why anyone would keep the sculpt name, unless they really loved it.
But I have a Momocolor Sophie, whose name is Sophie. I've always liked that name, but the real reason she kept her sculpt name is because she was a floating head intended to sell. She didn't sell, so I tried finding her a body. When I finally got her a body, the name Sophie was so deeply attached to her, other names just don't feel right. My practise face / mauled face still has the name her previous owner gave her.

    17. I only have one doll that sort of kept his sculpt name. He's Dollstown Yujin but one of the names he's called is "Eugene" which sounds somewhat similar.
Generally though when I see a doll - the name just comes to me and I keep it on the back burner until the doll arrives. Then the name I came up with either sticks or I keep thinking of it as the sculpt name until something suits me.

    18. My method is the name of the sculpt becomes the doll's last/"Family" name. Example: Pippi Pong

This makes the most sense to me because someone will invariably refer to my doll by the sculpt, so it minimizes confusion on both sides and it solves the whole "what sculpt is that" question. If they know the doll better, they'll probably call it by its given name instead. Otherwise, a little polite formality never hurt anyone.

    19. I have a Dreaming Doll Ryuna and although Ryuna is a beautiful name, I think Dawn fit her more. She doesn't have a story just yet, but I wasn't really feeling Ryuna.

    20. My DIM Edmon remains Edmon, which sounds acceptable for a Tudor dandy. Sometimes I just give the name a different nationality, so Aurora becomes Aurore, and Yolanda became Iolanthe. AS Carina the vampire became Carmilla.
