1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Have you ever kept the Sculpt Name as your Doll's Name?

Oct 28, 2009

    1. I'm sure I've seen this discussed, but I can't remember where!

I personally have not, and would not. Nothing wrong with doing that, but it really strongly does not appeal to me to do so for my dolls. My dolls are characters, and for the most part their names are carefully chosen to express their character and their place in relation to the other dolls.

    2. My Shoyo's name is Ellery (Elle), and my incoming Hid's name will be Halowen (Halo). I just couldn't fathom having a doll named Shoyo or Hid - those names seem like... objects, to me, not names. I may eventually get a ShuShu... and again, that seems more like an object name than the name of a character. IMO.

    3. I have, but only once.

Generally, I name a doll before I order it, which actually helps a lot with impulse buys. If it doesn't have a name, then it doesn't come home.
My dolls are characters, though instead of finding the doll to suit the character, generally I look for dolls that create their own characters, and that includes original stories and names. Names are pretty important to me, so keeping the sculpt name kind of takes away from the character and personality I'm looking for (to ME and the way I collect dolls, it's totally cool if others feel differently and find the sculpt name works just as well).

The one doll I own that kept his sculpt name is my AoD Mo, named MO. He was intended to be a practice head, so I had no reason to give him a name and just referred to him as Mo. Unfortunately, he didn't stay a practice head for long and now has his own story and reason behind why his name is MO. So in his case, it worked out. But could I see that happening again? No, not really.

    4. Nope. Something about naming them makes them "mine".

    5. Im Keeping My `Mo2s` Name as a surname, His full name will be Chopin Mo *named after my faveroute pianist xD*

    6. I'm still in the process of naming several of my dolls. This probably comes from getting so many faceplates so quickly, but also because I tend to think a bit on what I'd like to call them. My winking Ante, for example, is taking an especially long time. Similarly though, my multihead Ante just won't have any other name but 'Ante.' I think it's cute, like the head itself, and so it's tending to stick.

I don't see a problem with keeping the name if it fits. You've thought on it, you like it, it's the doll's name. I don't see it as any less personal, especially since you're already imparting some of yourself into it in other ways.

    7. Not even close for me. HOWEVER should I ever somehow manage to get myself the RealSkin Kamau I want to go along with my Light Tan Kamau who will be named Sarge, then there is a good possibility I MAY keep his name as Kamau. It's just utterly perfect for him! That said, the whole being able to dress, make up and name these dolls however I want is what appeals to me, so there's a very good possibility that he'd only keep the name Kamau until I found him his own name.

Since I doubt I'm ever gonna get him though, I don't think it matters too much. lol

    8. I've never done it myself... but I do a know a few people who have, and it seems to have worked out pretty well for them. They tend to be more "this is my pretty art-object"-type owners than "this is my little resin buddy"-types, though, and don't typically play the dolls-as-characters game. As for myself, I'd run into trouble fast using the Sculpt-as-Name system. I have multiples of a few favorite sculpts, and no one would know which of the little monsters I was talking about if they didn't have individual names.

"I just found the funkiest wig ever for Shiwoo!"... "Uhm. *Which* Shiwoo? One of the pointy-eared ones? The white one with the red eyes? That guy over there with the spider on his head?"

Names may take awhile to settle on, but they make conversations a heck of a lot easier.

    9. That's true for me, too. Which Shiwoo? There are 3 plus a spare head here, 2 Pipis, and 2 Woosoos!

    10. The answer to the question for me is "yes"...my Volks Heath, is still named Heath. I fell in love with his promo picture on Volks website and was thrilled when I was able to score him during the online After Event. I didn't have any character in mind for him, I just thought he was the handsomest SD13 boy ever...and I still do! :D When I first got him, I thought I'd eventually choose another name for him, but he just looked like Heath right away so that moniker just stuck, and now I wouldn't think of changing it. My Heath's evolving backstory as a rather reluctant time traveler, still mourning the lost of his little sister Angelica after three centuries, makes him unique enough to me without worrying about how many other Volks Heath's may still be sharing his name. ;)

      Juli DC :)

    11. Yeah! I got a Volks Rose and after toying with naming her "Hime" I ended up keeping her name as Rose. She's so pretty and Rose really fits her perfectly.

    12. AHAHA... YES. Gosh. I feel so silly for it though, because I see all these dolls' names that are so unique and exotic sounding, yet... naming my doll after its sculpt makes me seem so uncreative/lazy but he just... looks like a Louis to me, y'know? I can't help it~!!

    13. I never could. I'm one of those people who believe that choosing the right name is part of the customization process. He's not my character until he has a name I gave him. Ya know?
And also, finding just the right name is simply a lot of fun. I spend a lot of time pouring over name websites, finding a name with just the right meaning; or sometimes a name comes to me from some source or another, and I just know that's the name he was meant to have. It's all part of making the character, which is the biggest reason I'm in this hobby. :)

    14. I have one tiny doll that has her company name, just because I like it and think it suits her perfectly. If I like it, why not?

    15. My dolls are all based on pre-existing characters, so no, I've never done this. I feel that for me it subtracts substantially from the whole customization aspect, which is the whole reason I'm in this hobby; if I didn't name a doll, it wouldn't feel like mine. That said, I'm not everyone, other people can do whatever they like with their own dolls! XD;

    16. I've kept the original sculpt names for all my dolls, mainly because I don't buy dolls to represent characters. I just like dressing them and looking at them!:lol::lol:

    17. For DD licensed character dolls, I always retain their original name--that's kind of the point for those dolls.

For everybody else, I've only done this once (SD16 Iris). I had tried 2 other names for several months but neither "stuck" in my head and I would keep calling her by her model name. I eventually settled on "retconning" a character of mine to have the name Iris.

    18. I have an Angelheim Luka, and I kept his sculpt name. I just thought it fit him nicely and I'm not good at thinking of names. However, he's still a very established character in my mind/stories, it's just his character came after the doll. I don't see how keeping the name of a sculpt prohibits making him/her an original character, since (most of the time) sculpts aren't necessarily characters. C:

    19. I tend to name everything, and I like names and choosing names, so no, I've never kept a sculpt name for a doll. And in one case, one of my girls has a sculpt that's been listed with different names in different places so I'd hate to give her an identity crisis, haha.

    20. I have, sure... and would. Especially when the name is something crazy or funny that I know I'd never be able to top. For example I haven't owned an Elfdoll Bong Sun Hwa, but there's no name out there more perfect for her than her default! I know if I got one she'd definitely keep that name.
