Have you ever wanted a popular doll just to 'fit in'?

Jan 11, 2010

    1. No way! I wouldn't drop that much money just because something was popular and I HAD to get it to fit in. Though, I guess popular dolls are popular for a reason. ^^;

    2. I have never understood some people's need to fit in with any "crowd"... at the end of the day it's just you and your dolls, buy the ones that you love!

    3. Nope, although I have wanted a popular doll because it fit one of my characters. ^^

    4. I usually like things that are not common, even if it might be a pencil or pencil bag. So I have the same feelings towards a doll. I want a doll that not everyone has. I want it to be special. And if I like a doll that's considered "popular" then I would like to do the face up differently or something. I don't know. I just want my dolls to be unique and one of a kind.

    5. I'm currently contemplating this myself. I've yet to buy my own doll but my birthday is coming up...
Popular dolls may just be popular because they're good sculpts. In that case, there's nothing much wrong with wanting one.

    6. I've never really boughten a doll because of the popularity. If I love it I get it...

When a site isn't popular though, I may not buy their doll even if I love it XD

    7. Nope. I want it because I think it's cool, I don't care about fitting in because I have a common doll mould - that's just silly to me. Sometimes a popular brand or mould catches my eye because I've seen shots and demonstrations/owner reviews that really impress me though. However... those dolls have yet to arrive and win me over - I'm usually disapointed lol! I buy a doll because I think I like it and think that it may satisfy my wants in a doll, popularity being there or not has nothing to do with the choice at the end of the day.

    8. I actually am learning I lean the other direction. I want a doll that isn't so popular.
When I first started in this hobby I fell head over heels in love with Littlefee Ante. I wanted that doll. That was the doll I wanted. I ended up getting a puki as my first (never regretted that decision), and as I lurked around the LTF thread and poked around on Flickr I learned that practically -everyone- had a LTF Ante. My desire for her died over time after seeing so much of her. It was like an Ante overload ;)

I only buy dolls who really 'speak' to me, I suppose you could say. I over analyze everything about a doll that interests me and then I compare it to cost/size/desperate wanting urge, if it comes down to the bare wire (which by that point I know I'm not really -that- into it anyway), I will sometimes ask myself 'How popular is this sculpt?'

I do have to say that there are times I want to buy a certain doll to 'get in on the fun' so to speak, especially if the thread is one that is active, and the community there is fun and friendly. But overall, no, I don't feel the need to purchase a popular sculpt to fit in or because it's popular. I don't own a particularly popular sculpt (maybe my puki could be seen as 'popular' but I don't think so), but I try to make all my dolls unique. Because even if they aren't popular dolls, they are my dolls and are different from the same sculpt owned by another person. If I did buy a sculpt that was popular it would be because I love it.

Buying a doll just because it's popular is not valid for me. Perhaps for someone else it is, I don't want to get into a psychological commentary on why people buy items that are 'popular'. So I'll leave it at that. :)

    9. Short answer: I wanted, but never bought one.
And it was a MNF. It wasn't that I wanted to belong to the happy crowd of MNF owners - although I do like to chat, when it comes to the doll stuff I am there either to help new people (answer their questions about specific dolls, companies, etc) or to showcase the artistic side (upload photos, face-ups, jewelery) and discuss that.
MNFs intrigued me by their flexibility - this was the original reason why I wanted the doll. It wasn't the sculpt, or their photos - it was the possibility to join in the "I'm flexible and can do a hand stand having my legs bent over the head" bandwagon. But it's two years now since I first saw the doll, a year and a half since I found out how flexible they were, and still no MNF in sight. This is mostly due to me looking for more realistic sculpts as I found out that overly stylized ones (if they do not depict child characters) simply don't suit my characters.

    10. Personally I don't think owning a popular doll is going to make anyone fit it.
And if you buy a doll because a lot of people have it that's a dumb reason
and a waste of hundreds of dollars. Buy a doll you like not for it's popularity.

    11. I have to admit... I'm kind of guilty of this. I went to my first dolly meet and I realized that almost everyone there had 1/3 sized dolls. I felt a little uncomfortable with my 1/4 so I decided the next doll I'm going to get is a 1/3.

I'm not going to go for the more popular 1/3s, though. I just can't afford it.

    12. Personally, there was a doll I wanted but that's before I found out just about everyone has one so I decided to look around more and found one that I liked better. :3

      But still can't decide if I want a 1/3 or 1/4.. OTL

    13. I have to confess this somewhere. When I first joined this hobby I desperately wanted a Volks girl - I wanted the name brand and the supposed quality. I ended up buying a full choice head (discontinued f-07 which was extremely unpopular at the time) and a second hand sd10 girl body.
I hardly ever "played" with this doll. She was big, heavy and hard to pose and therefore I didn't really take many pictures of her.
I later bought a Volks MSD but that was quickly sold.
A few years later I finally just sold off the Volks doll.
And then much later I finally found dolls that I am really having fun with and surprisingly it's from one of the lowest priced doll stores there is! And I learned my lesson.

Definately buy something you are going to have fun with rather than something you're hoping to get attention with.

    14. Yes. Back then, 4 years ago I do. But I've got back my senses and now I don't care much about the community or about making friends. I care about myself first, because those friends, they are not gonna pay the bills. It just happens that the dolls that I want are popular sculpts.

    15. A popular doll isn't the doll I choose. As an example, the most popular SD size is too big for me. MSD size too. When I don't have fun even if I have a popular doll, that's a stress. I buy doll of the size (and sculpture) which fits myself, even if that doll is unpopular :)

    16. I wouldn't buy a doll just because it's popular, but if I liked it and it just happened to be popular then I would buy it. I've never been much of a trend follower anyway. To justify how much money I would be spending, I would at least have to love the doll.

    17. I understand what you mean, but I do not think I will do that kind of thing. I am the type of person who will only do thinngs that I want to do.

    18. Mm, no. I ordered my doll because it was brand new and that way I didn't have to pick between the two I was trying to decide between for months.
As for doing it to fit in... I tried to talk on the forum for the type of doll I'm getting and got ignored... I guess that doesn't matter. I'm just happy I'm getting a doll I think is cool because it's double-jointed and it has a beautiful sculpt.
I kind of wish I was able to find somewhere that I could make friends on her. I understand why people would get a doll to be accepted. No one likes to be ignored or alone!

    19. I only buy dolls that I want to buy. I actually find a good number of 'popular' dolls just not my style. They don't look good to me, and I know I'd probably have a disconnect if I were to purchase one. Sometimes, owner photos can make me see the doll in a better light, but most of the time, the owner photos don't really help the doll look better to me.

There are some dolls that I do find myself liking, and they also happen to be popular. I don't like them because they're popular, but when people mention them enough, it makes me take notice.

    20. No, I am chosing dolls that I like. The most important thing is not th price but sculpt and mobility.
