Have your tastes changed since you first started the hobby?

Oct 24, 2014

    1. I've been interested in BJD since middleschool, and I'm finishing up my Associates degree right now. So, from middle school to college, my tastes have changed. Originally, when I first wanted a doll in middleschool, it had to be a Volks SD boy. I wouldn't take anything else. Never did get my Volks boy, hahah. I still really love the older Jrock/gothier dolls, just toned down a bit. And now I prefer MSD girls the best, and don't care for Volks all that much aside from their Dollfie Dreams. I mean, Volks is great, but it's not what I want anymore. I think I was just really new and concerned about the costs, so I wanted to make sure I got the big shiny name so I didn't end up with something I disliked. Now I like more affordable dolls. Like, my favorite is my Boy&Girl Triya that I bought secondhand off my friend. The first doll I bought had double joints, I quickly learned I do not like double joints. I like single joints, and I definitely prefer 'older' style bodies. Thicker, plain BJD I guess.

    2. Yes, my tastes have definitely change. When I first started I wasn't drawn to male sculpts of any kind. And until recently I was really put off by them, but in the last month or two I have found myself admiring all of DollClans creations. They are magnificent in every way.

In my case, as I delve deeper into this hobby, the more my tastes develop and change over time. I feel I more open-minded! :aheartbea

    3. When I first got into bjds I sort of impulse bought the first few that I liked the look of but now I know a lot more about bjds and have looked at many sculpts I am much more selective. I buy a doll with a particular character in mind so I search for the sculpt that suits that character. My first few had less realistic head sculpts than those I have now. I sold my early Doll-love & AOD dolls and now prefer Iplehouse, Soom and MNMs. The one thing that hasn't changed though is I still prefer the bigger dolls (65cm+) and I only have boys.

    4. Well, I did initially never want anything larger than a yosd and I'm doing a layaway for a minifee now so I guess that has changed...it's more to do with space issues as opposed to taste though. But before I got my first doll I know I wanted her to be decked out in all kinds of lolita stuff but once I had her most of what I found didn't fit what I had in mind for her. Other than that I'm pretty consistently all over the board with what I like, the likes and dislikes seem to change from day to day. Dx

    5. I burst out laughing at this! (And share that view.)

As for preferences over the years, I think I've gotten more of a taste for female dolls compared to when I first got into the hobby. But the sculpt styling I prefer has stayed quite similar, and I still can't get into animal/anthro dolls.

    6. My tastes have changed a bit. In the very beginning when I was searching for my first doll I used to prefer angsty, teenage boys for the most part, at least that's what I remember spending most of my time looking at (Ringdoll, Migidoll, Volks, etc). I always admired Soom fantasy dolls, but when I was able to bring home my first I was completely hooked. I still greatly prefer SD males over any other type of BJD, but I now am more drawn to muscular, manlier dolls (Soom Hyperon, Phonolus, Ender, Gluino, etc), when I used to be more drawn to lanky guys (Dollshe), and androgynous (Soom Heliot, Dia) sculpts.

    7. My tastes have certainly changed. When I started collecting dolls in 2009, I was drawn the most to female dolls who looked to be about 18 - 30 years old, who were a little bigger than, say, a Barbie doll (I'm sorry, I haven't quite got the "YOSD, MSD, SD terminology down yet :sweat ). I also wanted to dress them in very casual, going-to-the-mall, hipstery kinds of outfits.

Now, I still have plenty of room in my heart for dolls like that, but my tastes have definitely gotten more... expensive (haha). I like to dress my dolls in mori-style outfits I purchase off of Etsy, rather than fashion packs found in Target toy aisles.

My doll collection has gotten more diverse the longer I collected. I got bored of collecting only young adult white women, so now I have boys as well as girls, and a wider range of skin tones. And the age range of my dolls has started dipping dramatically. I brought home a 15 year old boy, then some 10 year old girls, and now I have a little girl who's around 4 years old. My tastes have certainly broadened, and I think that's a good thing! It's more fun to shop for a bunch of dolls with their own personalities and back stories, rather than a bunch of fashion plates, in my opinion (though fashion plates are a lot of fun too, of course). :)

    8. I don't think my taste for dolls changed at all. I still like cool, calm, gentle and elegant dolls :D What it changes, is actually my doll's taste (or my fashion style). At the beginning, I sewed and made so many kimono for them to wear but now...they often wear Rococo/Baroque style outfit. I wonder which style they will have next year.

    9. I still like the same general idea for my dolls, but outfits are all over the board. Although to be honest, that is not a change, I have always loved putting my dolls in whatever I think of at the moment. :D

    10. When I first got interested in BJDs I used to prefer dolls that had an "anime" look to them, you know, pretty and big eyed. I also wanted to dress them with clothes that could be only described as taken out of a CLAMP manga. Now that I actually have money to buy a doll, I prefer face molds that have interesting features and that are different from others. And when it comes to clothes... well, I think that now I prefer mori clothing.

    11. wow this thread has some attention already. I just got into bjd this year. you could say my tastes have changed. I originally found them creepy. Like a room full of pictures whoes eyes follow your every move.

But as my GF got into it more and more i started to like them. My real turning point was Dollisim in NY. Thats where i bought an SD, (the only SD in the house and she hates that i got one first) and it really opened up my eyes to the creativity and passion you all have for it.

So thats the turning point where i more aquired a taste. So far i like Volks, luts, and resin soul dolls and probably will for a while. But i also enjoy the idea of having fully unique ideas that my doll will be the only one of its kind in more than one way.

In the future as i become more skilled i feel like my taste will change.

    12. too soon to change taste, but it may have changed after seeing so many dolls at dollism plus.

    13. This is so me right now! It's a bit alarming transitioning into this change. It was SD all the way. That changed to MSD. Now I find myself wanting more Tiny/YoSD. Maybe it's my age creeping up on me.

But I find that the babies are filling characters for my doll family that I never knew were needed.

I still have at least one MSD in me though. One of my boys is missing a best friend.

    14. I think I'm already 4yrs in the hobby xD I started out with Pullip dolls which I find cute a well small xD after that I stumbled by chance and fell competely in love with Volks Dollfie Dreams currently I have 6 including the one who's in work in progress. I never sold my Pullips just a small number of 6 and 3 NRFB collection a total of 9.

Now.. I'm getting into resin BJD :3 I first bought a kitty from luts a zuzudelf which I'm not attached and ended up selling it in a loving new home :3 I bought next a kitty pet bjd from aileendoll which I really love :3 I'm waiting for my first YoSD Luts HDF sweet holiday ver. Choco :3 I have an IOS Osiris head who'll be my 70cm guy :3

    15. Yes, the taste is very changed! In the beginning, I went crazy on the big guys, I like the company and I wanted Loongsoul settle at their guys! First doll was Ducan from DOD, not long ago we parted, I realized that the big guys are not mine.Who loves the big girls, SD16 from Volks, and very little girl, 26-14 cm:aheartbea

    16. I have been interested in this hobby for quite some time before I allowed myself to buy my first doll. I think at first I loved the male dolls with feminine features. I didn't really like the fantasy type dolls or anything like that. When I was finally looking to buy my first doll it actually turned out to be a girl from Iplehouse.
Now I guess I'm in love with some of the dolls from doll chateau, which is a big difference from before.
I guess everybody their tastes can changes, even if at first I was just interested and not looking at it that seriously.

    17. It's been only a little less than two years that I entered the hobby, but my tastes have already changed a bit^^ I'm still very fond of my first doll and I don't think I'll be able to sell her (well, him, actually xD), but its type of face is not what I really search for anymore. At the beginning, I was in love with all Iplehouse sculpts and amazed by Luts's ones. I still like Iplehouse very much but wouldn't consider owning more than one or two of their dolls, I don't really think they are for me. I've always liked realistic features, and I didn't like Volks because their sculpts were too "manga type". I love mangas, but this is just not what I want for my BJD (even if SQ-Lab girls are damn cute...)
Now I'm more and more attracted to artist sculpt (Noble Dolls, Dark Tales Dolls, Lillycat, Mystic Dolls, ...) or dolls with stronger/stranger features. At first I didn't liked Doll-Chateau at all, now, well... I'm waiting for one of their girls, and plan on purchasing another on within next year. I also really like Dollpamm (the Dizzlying Hachi <3), the big Dollshe boys, Blossom dolls...

    18. My tastes have definitely changed over the years! I started with an baby-faced looking SD doll whom I treated as my 'kid' (lol. I don't anymore!), then bought my first CP and started having a CP addiction. I'm not fond of CPs anymore, I prefer more realistic sculpts like Supia now.

    19. Totally :sweat
When I started I liked the anime-aesthetic with a hint of realism, a DIM Achernar was my first and afterwards I had a DZ and a LUTS afterwards.
      Sharp features with big eyes.
The style was casual, the hair long-ish and while my first was a SD I quickly realized I prefer 70cm dolls.

I then switched to more realistic dolls and that's what dominated my collection most of the time.
Iplehouse, Dollshe, LLDT and the rare Soom inbetween, always ranging between 65cm for the females and ~70cm for the males.
I tried MSDs, but they weren't my thing, same for the YoSDs.
My dolls clothes also got more dramatic and big/frilly, no more casual stuff, and all of them are pretty serious looking.

Now I'm in a third phase, while the ones from the second are perfect as they are I'm currently trying to repaint and re-design some of them for more realism and a more defined look.
However, I also am in a state of nostalgia currently.
I bought myself a SD10 guy and started my Volks collection, with big eyed frilly boys and girls, "simple" bodies and big heads.
I also suddenly start to like glittery Oscar eyes, more dramatic face-ups and dreaming eye shapes (something I actually disliked before).
I think in the end I will have two groups, the realistic dark one and the more classic one with a bunch of Volks.
Gladly they don't belong into the same story, so having two totally different styles at home isn't a problem.

Some things I'm pretty sure I'll never like.
I'm not a big fan of the majority of artist dolls, like the ones with female dolls that have huge hips and oddly shaped faces, and I'm sure I will stick to the 70cm guys.
I also won't really warm up with normal casual clothes again, I prefer my dolls to look a bit over the top, and I will slowly replace all the wigs with Angora ones (when it fits) and the eyes with special urethane eyes (like Oscar or the Unique Enchanted). No more fur/fiber or simple glass eyes.

      In regards to the community:
I changed from "super invested and always posting" to "I'm feeling a bit burned out" to "I hate everything", the latter is mostly because of communities like Tumblr where next to the few nice people you have a shitton of rude idiots who think you should be offended about everything and anonymous confession blogs are a super good idea.

    20. When i started or tought about starting this hobby, i was interested in MSDs and i thought MSD size is my taste, but 4 months in the hobby my taste turned the other way and i'm thinking of adding new characters and starting by getting a selection of Mid- Yo-sd, Yo-sd, Sd and more Msds, i don't like buying clothes so much i like making them my self and i think making these sizes will satisfy my taste of these new sizes i shall get ^^ , so i'll start saving up!
