Have your tastes changed since you first started the hobby?

Oct 24, 2014

    1. My tastes have sort of changed over the 8 years I've been in the hobby. At first, very early on, I much prefered highly stylised, anime type faces. My dream doll at that time was a Volks Nono or Ryo. But I liked more realistic dolls like Souldoll too. The main change that I've noticed is that I like a wider range of styles. I already like variety and that's just gotten more pronounced over the years. Some things have stayed the same though. I still prefer to own female dolls, or male sculpts on female bodies, and I like a wide range of sizes.

    2. Yeah, at first I preferred 1/6 BJDs, sort of Barbie-size... I guess it was just the size of dolls I was used to play with. Now I prefer 1/4

    3. I've only been in the hobby for a bit more than a year but within that time I used to like very detailed clothing that was very dramatic. But now I like more casual everyday clothing. I think its easier to bond with a doll that's a little more realistic.

    4. yes. I'm more geared to having an actual story now. and i've taken a fantasy turn where as before my dolls were just mannequins basically.

    5. I don't really think my tastes have changed, but I've only been in the hobby for about three years. I prefer the more unique and mature looking dolls. :)

    6. I feel like my tastes have evolved rather than changed. My first doll has a sculpt I'm no longer entirely all that keen on, but the elements of his face are still very similar to the rest of my dolls-not too realistic, sleepy/smallish eyes, somewhat feminine, roundish cheeks...these are all things I still really adore and look for in all the rest of my dolls. Unfortunately he also has features I no longer particularly care for-thin, pointy nose, smirky, thin lips and mini size. My other two minis, although also some of my earlier dolls, were already moving away from this trend and thus I find them much prettier. Overall my first doll still fits in nicely with the rest of my collection and I feel they all mesh together in a good way, but my later dolls have aesthetics I definitely prefer over my first.

    7. Oh, mine definitely have changed. First I was only going to collect the realistic SD. Then I fell in love with a Choa that has a face-up by Evenstar & that led to my looking at more stylized dolls like some more Customhouse & Peaks Wood kids. Then I finally broke my SD only rule & bought some tinies, both realistic & stylized. And now after all these years I'm concentrating on slim minis. I think I've turned my whole collection over keeping only those I truly love of all sizes & styles. I really love the looks of the big EID guys but they're beyond both my space & money allotments.

    8. The only thing that didn't change is that I still love Iplehouse so much >w<
I used to not like Artist dolls, but now I'm so crazy about them in particular Dust of dolls et Cerisedolls . I used to find them weird, now I think they are the most beautiful dolls I have xD

    9. Yes and No. I still prefer the more realistic dolls - like Iplehouse - but whereas I was first attracted to adults and larger dolls to dress in period and fantasy costumes, my favourite these days are the tiny children. I find I can do so much more with them.

    10. Not really. I have always been into dolls that look pretty in a wired way. Not sure if I made myself clear. What I mean is unpopular dolls, I guess.

    11. I thought SD's were *way* too big when I first got into the hobby. So I bought an MSD. I quickly learned that, no, I love big dolls. Almost every one I own now is in the 60-70cm range. Ah, well. Live and learn!

    12. Nobe started off with a SD and it keep going up now, i do tend to look fore more mature looking SD then a lot of the teenage i see around :XD:

    13. My tastes have definitely changed since I started collecting BJD just a few years ago. I'm not really sure what they were back when I started, kind of all over the place, but I'm more sure of what I like now. I know what I look for in a sculpt, what kind of body I prefer, and what sizes to avoid. It's meant that I've sold several dolls but I'm very happy with my current collection and feel confident that all the dolls on my current wish list will stay for good, too.

    14. Could not agree more with this statement.
As far as my taste in dolls: nope, hasn't changed. It's actually become more solidified. I highly prefer more realistic dolls. My first BJD was my dream doll, a super realistic Elfdoll Rita. But then for my second I tried a more stylized doll, both because the company pics made her look less cartoony than she was in person and because I didn't realize how much the difference in aesthetic was going to bug the hell out of me. But it did, and my love of realistic dolls was confirmed. I see plenty of gorgeous, beautifully customized BJDs with very stylized sculpts, and the pictures are nice to look at, but I definitely don't want to own one ever. I also started out wanting SDs, and now having handled and sewn for my daughter's MSDs, that's definitely confirmed too. I will be sticking with my realistic SDs.

    15. Yes my tastes have definitely changed :) I am much more intrigued by "odd" sculpts like Doll Chateau and Leeke Art bodied dolls. I am SLOWLY creeping to like realistic dolls as well!

I just want all the dolls lol

    16. Nope, i'm still looking for old-school sculpts and have a wishlist that consists mostly of dolls that are years old. As a collector, I'm not really interested in the realistic look.

Even the size hasn't changed for me: I started out collecting mostly SD's (although I do have a tiny and an MSD), and I'm still mainly focused on SD's.

    17. I was SURE when I started out that I'd want to get a SD big doll and have her be a big floofy lolita. And somehow my doll collection is shaping up to be all MSD boys in goth casual. XD

    18. I dreamt about SD sculpts when I first found out about BJD, I really loved Dolshe boys, IOS etc. Well, they happen to be too heavy and big for me, I still enjoy their photos on Tumblr but in fact collect MSD sized BJD. I don't have a specific taste, mostly odd, peculiar sculpts like Doll Chateau.

    19. yes- first I was totally in Iplehouse and real looking sculpts and not keen on MSD but now I wish to have an MSD maybe add cat ears on her and just let her be cute and if she has not such a realistic face I dont mind :D

    20. I did NOT like the Leekeworld Art body or any other weird bodies from Leeke...mow I own an Ashley ON the Art Body lol. I now find it cute.
