Have your tastes changed since you first started the hobby?

Oct 24, 2014

    1. Unfortunately nothing has changed for me, I still love all of the really big ilpehouse men, tho I seem to have acquired more Sid's of late. But I am at that point where I defiantly don't want any more. Except for a Roger & another Kamau. & mabe a Theo! lol

    2. I've been in the hobby for two years now and always thought I would only get SD size girls. But recently I fell in love with a MSD size girl and now that I have her I can't believe how much I love this size!:XD: Though, my SD girls will always hold a special place in my heart.

    3. When I first got interested in bjds back in high school it was all about the whole femme boys and such. I wanted to get a doll that I could dress and make clothes for and look super pretty. Luckily I never got around to buying one because I was zero prepared for the upkeep. But now that it's been about ten years my tastes have changed considerably. I like the creepy, unsettling kinds of dolls. But the leaning toward femme boys is still there. They just. Might be femme boys that have an extra limb or two or three...

    4. When I was just looking in to finally buying a doll... I was going to get an Obitsu 27 cm girl. I had no idea that there were even such things as elastic-strung dolls, I just thought that Obitsu was the cheapest brand of BJD's out there. Haha, now I have an MSD that cost an amount of money that I was originally never going to spend on a doll. Oops :)

    5. my want list is constantly evolving, lately i've basically been removing a lot of dolls from it and now its 90% luts. Seems my tastes have changed to luts dolls

    6. I've been in the hobby for a little over a year now and my tastes have changed only slightly so far, I guess I'd say that they're more refined now.
I've gone from liking basically everything to having a deep deep love and appreciation for dolls with well-sculpted features, deep planes of the face, strong noses, and warped proportions (ex; doll chateau, leekeworld, and many artist dolls!) I also used to dislike dolls with extreme expressions, but they really are starting to grow on me a lot lately!!

    7. In some ways, yes, my tastes have changed. Getting into the hobby seven years ago, I thought I'd only have MSDs since SDs were too big and tinies were just too small. Looking at my collection now, I have 2 SDs, and 2 tinies (1 Puki and one YoSD). I'm still way more interested in MSDs but I'm not totally averse to other sizes.

Even my company tastes are changing - I still adore Luts sculpts but I'm really starting to fall in love with Iplehouse and MysticKids sculpts too.

    8. I really didn't have much discretion when I first started. It's only been a year but I have a good grasp of what I really like now. I'm very into highly stylized dolls like Dollpamm, Doll Chateau and Dollzone, Dust of Dolls, Enaibi, etc., as well as ultra cute dolls like Latis, Pukis, and Tiny Delfs. My tastes are unfortunately mostly expensive and limited (if buyable at all :sigh)

But hey, it's only been a year! May this coming year in doll collecting be filled with successes for everyone!

    9. Yes! I started with a minifee and went mad on fairyland for a while. Found out I don't get on with tinies. Starting getting into European BJDs then sold all but one minifee. Still only collect MSDs but much more diverse collection :)

    10. I started out only loving the tinies that look like kids. But lately, I've become interested in larger and older dolls.

    11. My tastes have changed a bit since first starting the hobby close to 2 years ago. I mainly wanted anthro or animal dolls and maybe one human msd. I loved grey skin and tan skin mainly. Never thought I'd get an sd or tiny human dolls but yep! I have a sd girl and two more sd heads and three tiny boys! I also said in the beginning I'd never get a boy sd and I kinda want one. I think my preferences in the hobby will continue to change. It's fun.

    12. My 'tastes' are all over the place at the moment and my wallet hates me for it. I bought my first BJD secondhand in August of 2014, she was a Fairyland Littlefee. I fell hard for her when she arrived and I still think she's absolutely adorable. She started my love for the hobby but recently I've been contemplating about selling her.

My second BJD was an SD Moe Feeple60, also from Fairyland. I was a bit dissapointed when she arrived so we're still trying to bond. I'm quite sure she'll be a keeper but I'm also quite confident she'll be the only SD in the family for a while. I don't find them as 'cute' as the smaller sizes and I'm a sucker for cute.

I'd really love to purchase a Pukifee from Fairyland because of that same reason but I feel a bit guilty about it because my first dolls aren't getting much love at the moment. I figured though if I am so head over heels for the Littlefee the Pukifee must be even cuter...

Recently I also found out I have a soft spot for anthropomorphic dolls or dolls with animal features but I'm doing my best to ignore them for now. I'd much rather figure out which size is right for me before delving into other types of dolls.

I'm pretty sure my 'tastes' will change even more drastically in the future. I guess that's pretty normal because after all human beings keep evolving and so do their preferences.

    13. Your first one will always be special, don't sell her too quickly now! :aheartbea

My second one was also a Feeple60, I bonded with her after the initial "OMG she is huge" feeling. I also feel I don't want another SD anytime soon... I'd rather go for a MSD sized one. Minifee probably, I seem to have a Fairyland crush!

If cute is your thing, I am sure it's a good idea to look at a Pukifee. I wasn't really planning on getting one, but when one crossed my path I bought her immediately and I do not regret it. This is probably the smallest size for me... My friends have Realpukis and while they are also ubercute, I think they are a tad small for me.

    14. Yes, I actually started out with a diffrent type of dolls. But ever since I got into BJD's , my taste hasnt changed.

    15. When I first saw bjds (five years ago?!) I was drawn to SD, but the size was intimidating to me, so I went for msd, then yosd, and then tiny. I should have just gone with SD, as I am 'starting my collection over' and will have two SD's (not arrived yet) and a few tinies. Well, I learned a lot, got to try different sizes, and that's always a plus. So my tastes haven't changed, just my perceptions.

    16. I've been in the hobby since 2004, so things have changed a LOT.

I don't think it's my taste in dolls so much, since I still have and love my first dolls... But the kinds of dolls available back then were VERY LIMITED! Basically--there wasn't any choice! Only a few companies and only 60cm and a few 45cm...!!! And no realistic or fantasy styles aside from some elf ears and some with tiny fangs... And skin tones limited to NS and WS.

I know that my collection would look very different if I started much later. I'm still attached to my earlier dolls, though, so maybe it's just being sentimental... or maybe my tastes were different then because that was my only choice. And maybe things have shifted now because I have so much more choices???

I think I've always liked a LOT of different styles, so the more styles available, and the more dolls I've bought, the more things have --not really changed--but just expanded!!! I like tinies and minis and larger than large dolls now (at first only SD-sized)... And have fantasy dolls and humans and anime-ish and realistic... It's all been good. :D

    17. Somewhat I suppose. I've always loved girly boys and I've always wanted to dress mine up in girly clothes, but I used to lean a lot more towards lolita and japanese style clothing whereas nowadays I prefer more casual western style stuff.

I also used to swear I'd never be interested in anthro dolls or tinies, but now I find myself drooling over so many pretty anthros ;3; I never used to really be interested in girl dolls either, but lately I keep seeing beautiful female dolls and a couple have snaked their way onto my wishlist ;p I've also grown really fond of artist dolls.

    18. I started out with MSD girls and never thought that I'd get an SD or a boy. Or that I would venture beyond Dollzone dolls. This was way back in 2008.

I now have a SD boy from DOD. wow. things have changed.

    19. My tastes have become really weird actually. My first ever one was a YoSD. I never thought I'd own SDs since they're too big! I always thought MSDs were better and they would also be perfect for the characters that I liked. Unfortunately when I got my MSD we just didnt click at all. No bonding ever happened unlike with my YoSD so I thought ah I'm probably going to stick to smaller ones instead.

And then for some reason I fell in love with a sculpt that was an SD and I just sucked it up and tried it to see if I would click with a bigger doll. Lo and behold I actually liked how SDs are. Very convenient to pose and move. Heavy but still worth it. I likes SDs and YoSDs after that. And then Anthros came into my life. So I got pets for my YoSD and that's about it. I guess having to start makes you realize what you really want vs what you need. We all need to get the experience with all the sizes to see what fits us best.

    20. When I first got into the BJD hobby around January, I really like "normal" dolls. By this I mean that the dolls had almost no emotion and looked innocent. I didn't really like small breasts, but now I love all types of dolls.
I was looking at Serenade Doll and I completely fell in love. Their sculpt is so...unique and I have never seen anything like it. The breasts are really small and the body looks super "weird" but adorable.
