Have your tastes changed since you first started the hobby?

Oct 24, 2014

    1. I don't think so and I've been in it for a long while, but I tend to float in and out of it. I am not much still on hyper-realistic dolls and prefer some that have more of a Luts-ish look. I tend to like the older dolls that I started the hobby with, but some of the newer ones as well. There's far too many companies for me to keep up with now, but I remember there being like four or five main competitors roughly when I first started into this hobby, before I hopped into the DoA world too. I also remember specific users that were "big" when I started who maintained their own websites in relation to their hobby. My tastes haven't changed. I'm just able to afford more than I could before and am streamlining the ones I want.

    2. Originally I only liked human and "normal" dolls. For example, when I first saw Doll Chateau dolls I was horrified. Now I'm planning to buy one ^^ I was also cringed a little at the Leekeworld Art body, but now it's the cutest thing ever! :)

    3. I think my tastes have changed. The goal is the same- collect all the beautiful things! I still really want to own a pair of SDs in the future, and even some BID and KID sized Iple dolls. But I think I've gone from loving the realism to leaning towards more doll-like looking dolls. I still love/ prefer the more realistic looking dolls as of right now (*drools over everything Iple*), but I'm really gaining an appreciation for Fairyland sculpts too (darn you minifees!). I also want an Unoa one day. So, I'd say I am starting to like a much larger spectrum of dolls now.

    4. My tastes have definitely changed. When I first discovered BJDs I was really set on MSD girls, but now I find my love is drawn to SD boys

    5. Drastically. I was more into male dolls and even thought I would never own a female doll. Now I want mostly female dolls with the exception of a couple of male ones on my wishlist. I'm also more into pastel colors, casual/cute outfits and light colored wigs but I used to buy mostly dark fur wigs and punk/gothic outfits. I've been collecting BJDs for almost ten years though and the change is expected. I was a teenager when I first started and my taste in everything evolved as I grew up. I also used to buy without planning much and bought a couple of dolls I regretted later on. I'm more careful with my purchases now and I don't click the 'Buy It Now' button as easily.

    6. Slightly, I used to only want smaller/tiny dolls but now I only like bigger girls. MSD and hopefully an SD eventually

    7. When i first got introduced into this hobby i thought fantasy-ish doll were the bees knees.
And that was in 2009. I still think the whole fantasy look is nice but i'm loving a more casual look at the moment.
But i guess that could change any minute.

    8. I think my tastes have diversified over time. I started with the idea of having a few dolls, all SD-ish in size, mostly realistic - but as time went on I started adding larger and smaller dolls, and a handful of fantasy ones, and a larger number than I'd ever planned.

    9. My tastes in dolls hasn't changed much, if at all. If anything, my taste has been expanded? I like more styles or types but the basic aesthetic hasn't changed.

    10. Not really changed so much as adapted. Before I thought I would only want realistic dolls for OCs, and now I find myself adoring fantasy style dolls so much, that I've been adding some of them to my wish list.

    11. A bit, I suppose? I'm still attracted to the same basic style of sculpting when it comes to BJDs but how I style them seems to have evolved a bit.
At first I wanted all cutesy/casual girls. Now I've added a few boys and I'm expanding with clothing and faceup styles.

I've also added some Dollfie Dreams to the family and I just adore them!

But I think that's part of the fun of this hobby - if tastes and styles change then there's always something new and exciting to look forward to :)

    12. My taste changed... or at least I thought it did, but at this point I've kind of realized that what I initially liked is still my favorite and it's not a good idea to stray from it. Now that I have tried out every size I have a desire to try, I know that my initial interest in the Yo-SD size was and still is the best size for me. I also know what companies I like now. So, I suppose my taste didn't really change, I just gave myself a chance to try other things and in the end it came back to where it all started.

    13. Yea I would say mine changed quite a bit. Initially I really liked the more cool-looking sculpts XD but then somehow changed to liking more of cheerful and sculpts with bigger eyes (maybe those that has a smiling facial feature too). I don't really mind the doll size though, even before and now.

    14. My taste have changed, before i thought SD will just not work out for me it will be to big and heavy, MSD seem to be perfect!
Now when i know how it's to own a MSD, i would really want to have a SD doll in the future. It's so cute when you can cuddle with them and they seem really fun and amazing to have! :D

    15. It's not so much that my tastes have changed, but there are now a wider variety of companies that meet those tastes? I still have a definite preference to stylized-but-not-super-anime sculpts and more realistic bodies, and it has become a lot easier to hybridize dolls. I still prefer SDs, I still prefer boys, and I still have a thing for wide mouths and strong noses. A casual glance at my collection, and my oldest dolls don't look that stylistically different from my newest ones. I only have one fantasy doll, and she hardly counts since she's one of my tines.

    16. I used to collect just resin bjds, but now I mostly collect just vinyl bjds like dollfie dreams. ^^

    17. I'm still brand new to the hobby, but I already find myself changing in some ways. Widening my spectrum of interest, and developing an interest for very different dolls, stranger ones, like Doll Chateau and the likes. Also growing a major interest in fantasy dolls & parts.

    18. In the 5 years I've been in the hobby, my tastes have not changed. This puts me at a disadvantage because all the dolls I wanted are gone now. :(

    19. I would say when I first came into the hobby I was attracted to the dolls that looked cute and looked like kids- tinies- realpuki, pukipuki, MSD little girls, teenagers.
I have always wanted a pair of SD's - a mature couple, male and female, to dress in different periods of dress, from 18th century to modern. My problem is my budget and room on that end of the spectrum.

But now I am becoming more and more attracted to what is referred to as fashion bjd's-- high couture dolls. Extremely realistic high fashion model types of dolls and the way they photograph and can pose, with their clothing, props, etc. That tends to put me in a 1:4 scale 16-17in doll which here isn't necessarily always recognized on DoA, depending on where it is made. I'm ok with that. The quality is what attracts me.

I still love the fantasy of the fairyland bjd's, and the tinies..

    20. Oh yes, a looot. When I first discovered BJDs, I figured I would get an MSD sized doll, complete with outfit and face up from the company (oh my, the horrors of doing anything artsy with them myself, halp, no, I could never!) and then a max of two dolls in total or something along those lines. Was also into pretty stylized looking heads.

Today I own almost exclusively 60 - 70 cm dolls, I paint all of them myself with the exception of the few that came either with limited company face ups or already had one by a previous owner that I liked (maybe .. 3 dolls in total, haha), I've never gotten a fullset, am mostly interested in semi-realistic to realistic looking heads. Got a crew of 15 now and no end in sight lol.
