Have your tastes changed since you first started the hobby?

Oct 24, 2014

    1. I've been in the hobby for a little over five years now and.. yeah, my tastes have changed a few times lol.

At first I hated realistic-style dolls, like Iplehouse, and thought they were gross / uncanny valley.. then I loved them and wanted ten lol. I own two! And then.. now.. I'm kind of "eh" on them again and want less realistic, more stylized dolls again. :(

Also when I started collecting, I swore up and down I would NEVER get an SD, because they're just too big, etc... present day, most of my collection are SDs, and I don't pay much attention to my minis really. Whoooops.

    2. Yeah... I've started out really not having any interest in the big companies. Soom's faces seemed bland to me and Volks even more so... after all these years I've come to find that although I adore the quirkier dolls and sculpts I find some type of solace in the simpler aesthetics of Volks in particular. Soom has also become one of my favorite companies in the meantime since they seem to consistently produce dolls that actually strike my fancy.

There's been a lot of other things I didn't really like at first yet have grown on me since... small dolls, anthros and dollfie dreams to name a few. They are now a really important part of my crew.

    3. My tastes have expanded, rather than changed. Not sure if that is a good thing! I would save myself a lot of money for sure if I were to focus on one sculpt, but curiosity always gets the better of me. From looking at photos posted here and elsewhere, I have discovered a lot of BJD goodness in different sculpts, shapes, sizes and of both genders. No point fighting it, I guess. :XD:

    4. When I started the hobby, I was only into MSD sizes and boys. I think boy dolls really called out to me as dolls aren't usually marketed FOR guys, and I felt like it was a way I could connect more to the hobby.

As the years have passed, I've discovered that, as great as boy dolls are, I'm liking a lot of the girl dolls more now. I've also even nabbed some tinies, making my collection a little more eclectic.

    5. I'm not sure that my tastes have changed as much as now I'm making a bigger effort to find more independent artists. There are so many artists out there that you just wouldn't know of unless you spend considerable time crawling the internet and getting really friendly with google translate.

    6. I've been in the hobby for a year now and I think my tastes have changed. I'm not interested in dressing everyone in the same style as I originally thought I would. I need less punk clothes and more cute ones! Some dolls just don't suit the style. (My dolls anyway)

    7. At first, I like any BJD which looks dandy and cute. Now, I like more realistic sculpts. Those sculpts I can take on walks or show off to people without gaining look expressions from them :)

    8. My taste does have been changed: at first I liked (and my first doll was) a child BJD`s probably Because I was a child also myself. Recently I sold her because I just didn`t feel the connection anymore and she didn`t fit in my group. Now I like more mature type of dolls and really have started to search for the smaller artist`s who make very unique and different dolls. I require my dolls to have something more than a pretty face and that`s why the biggest companies dolls does not interest me that much anymore of what they did when I first started the hobby.

    9. I'd have to admit that yes, my tastes have changed quite a bit. I used to keep all my dolls in fancy and regal clothing. I haven't exactly grown out of elegant clothing, but I'm more selective about who wears what now. I also used to love having dolls just to have them, but I find if I don't have props now I'm less inclined to play with them or take photos of them.

I also now have zero interest in goth dolls. When I first joined the hobby I was all like "Oh I'm gonna have a goth vamprie girl and boy, and goth doll in this style (some dolls from JS by DZ). My tastes as far as dolls has also changed. I had prevuously discarded most of my doll plans completely that hadn't happened by 2012, and will probably do that again in the next year or so.

I'm also finding that with time, I'm less inclined towards resin dolls and more leaning towards vinyls. I don't know if it's a phase or not, kinda hoping so, as I do love my resin dolls too.

    10. my taste has completely changed! I went from mainly wanting volks to now owning a volks, a lillycat, a minifee and a hybrid doll! My next plan is to get a popovy doll, so I guess you can say I went to the more eccentric side of bjds

    11. I've only been in the hobby for two years. My tastes have not really changed much. It just took me a while to find my taste to begin with. In the beginning, it took a long time to finally sort through all of the different types and companies to come to a more solid conclusion on my preferred aesthetic. Though I love many different types of aesthetics and sculpts, the ones that I actually want to bring home have been pretty steady in my two years.

    12. Funnily enough I've had the same "taste" for a long time, my artistic style has changed a lot in my application techniques.
I still want the same doll that first brought me here!

    13. Not really. I was slow to buy bjds so knew pretty well what I wanted from the start. There are many I like to look at and appreciate, but for what I want to own, for now is pretty much the same. Subject to change at any minute! :D:

    14. Great question for the food for thought! When I first began collecting dolls I was attracted to the larger ones, mainly because the characters I had in mind to shell suited the sculpts I saw and the mature body types (they were mainly older people, 16-18). However I ended up experimenting with the Mini sizes because I was intimidated by how large the Large ones were and worried that they wouldn't be able to fit in my house! Further along when I became accustomed to their sizes, I began collecting Large ones, though I had new characters in mind that deviated from the ones I originally had a great deal (I was into anime then but nowadays I lean towards fashion design and aesthetics). Three years since then, I've succumbed to the adorable quality of the Tiny ones and am in the period of revising my collection to reflect my new preferences.

    15. When I first got into the doll hobby I was in LOVE with SDs. And I wasn't to keen on the tiny dolls. My sister got a pukipuki and I fell in LOVE with tinys! And I am no longer sure how I feel about SDs anymore Lol So yes my taste has changed xD

    16. I was late getting into the bjds....I was fascinated by the Japanese Art Doll books and a friend knew the Russian artist who makes the porcelain bjds. I started with inexpensive slim msd size but really liked the Dollstown SD sculpts. I sold all the msds to buy my first SD DT!! Now I am back into the larger msd dolls - Dollstown and Planetdoll are my favorites!! Who knows - next year I might be into minis!! It's all about where your heart is when you see it!!

    17. I had the major change of tastes twice in my 3 years in hobby, and almost all of my dolls survived it and continued to be part of my collection, with their looks and characters changed drastically :)

    18. My taste has changed a lot since I started in the hobby. I used to like big eyed dolls, that were just more... doll like, I guess. My last few have been much more realistic looking. I've also branched out in sizes and own 40cm-70cm dolls now, plus pets for my dolls. The colors of wigs and eyes I chose are much more on the realistic end too. If their hair isn't, it's because it's dyed.

    19. yes, drastically. When i first started I liked mostly the super-realistic dolls, and/or dark&gloomy ones. Then I had a phase when I was crazy about anything that had ears and hooves. Recently I was into sleepyheads and all things freckled. Nowadays... afrterall I came back to the cute, light, soft, big-eyed, unrealistic, dolly-dolls :) so... kind of in reverse what others usually go through :)

    20. An interesting topic to be sure! My tastes have changed since I first started into the hobby, definitely! I've been very interested in anime and Japanese culture for a good chunk of my life, so the dolls with larger eyes and less mature looking faces were some that appealed to me the most at first. But when I realized that I could customize the dolls basically any way I wanted, I started looking at them differently.

Originally, I only had thought about dolls based on my favorite anime/etc characters, since that's what I seemed to see the most at conventions, but then I started wanting to turn them into my own characters. Most of my characters are more mature-looking than a lot of the more stylized dolls tend to look, so I started drifting over to those companies. That in mind, however, I still really really want a Dollfie Dream someday, even though they wouldn't fit in with the rest of my dolls very well.

All these years later, though, I do still love the look of the more stylized dolls, even if I would not actually get one for myself, and feel that I can appreciate the hard work and love creators and owners put into their dolls no matter how I feel about the base sculpt.
