Have your tastes changed since you first started the hobby?

Oct 24, 2014

    1. I would have to say yes, but mostly about sculpts not themes or accessories. Before I had lots of doubts about what dolls to pick since I found many beautiful and cutes, now I guess I got a better focus and narrowed down. I don't want just a cute and beautiful sculpt but a different ones.

Also before I wanted to make my ocs in BJDs, I soon realized this would be impossible because physical traits and since there were too many. So stead I worked to make the BJDs have their own independent world and characters. I think it work best and I'm more satisfied with the hobby now.

    2. My answer to this question is both yes and no. Yes, in that my tastes have certainly changed insofar as size is concerned. I started off wanting only SDs because I dreamed of designing costumes for them and I thought bigger is better (and easier to fit detail into.) But that only lasted about a year because I found I also adored making displays and dioramas for them, and the SDs overwhelmed their space. So off they went to new homes, and I began collecting MSD and smaller which has kept me happy ever since. And no, in that my preferred style of BJD has remained surprisingly constant throughout the years in spite of how eclectic my crew is. My dolls all come from different companies and have very different characters and looks, yet there is a very recognizable inclination towards the more stylized, anime look in all of them.

    3. I don't think my taste has changed much. I still buy resin BJDs in the more anime style so they look good together with my first BJD, Volks SD13 Link. All my dolls wear casual modern clothing, with a few forays into traditional Japanese. Their clothing style has never changed. I love historical clothing and some of my friends really like to dress their dolls in it, but I pretty much stick to casual modern.

BUT... I once said I'd never have a BJD taller than 62cm, and now I have lots of 70cm Dollzones. And I started buying Dollfie Dreams, though they don't interact with the resin BJDs really.

    4. also yes and no,I used to like only over the top cute bjd's I also had a case of wanting only SD men but now I've sold a few SD men reshelled one into a girl and altought I still like cute ott bjd's I now also love serious, pouty msd and yosd girls in either mori fashion or goth/spooky/creepy fashion:sneaky

    5. Well, I started getting into the hobby 5 years ago and I can't really say that my taste has changed drastically. Other than not liking that particular sculpt I used to, not really. My taste seems to be the same.

    6. Kind of yes! I used to not even be able to look at doll chateau dolls, try really creeper meme out and I couldn't stand their bodies but now I really want to own an Elizabeth and an Isabel!

    7. People change naturally over time, whatever the change concerns: looks, likes, opinions on things, etc. I think it is safe to assume, that more or less, we all have changed. But, I think it would be safer to say: evolved.
I can see clear patterns on how I collect dolls and what I like. My tastes have expanded and my curiosity towards different dolls aswell. But it is still within a style you can always perdict.

    8. I believe my tastes have changed over the years. I've had many BJD and many have moved on as I lost interest in their styles. My most recent purchases are quite different from my older dolls in many ways, but I still love the older dolls I have, too, so parts of what I like have remained the same.

    9. When I started collecting dolls I thought that they were all going to be dressed like Lolitas with crazy colored hair. That came from my love for anime. As I go further into it I realized I prefer my dolls to dress more casually. I like that they looked modern and fashionable. Once my BJD arrives she will start dressing the same way. The crazy hair colors haven't changed though:lol:

    10. I don't think my tastes have changes, so much as I think I've just learned what I really like. When I first started I said Nothing to big or to small (pretty much just wanted YoSD's after reading the inches), nothing with sculpted closed eyes or a winking eye, no mismatched eyes, no dolls without knee or ankle joints, I would only get a max of 2 from any line, ect. It took me a couple years to save up enough to really start buying dolls. When i did, my very first one had no knee joints and a winking face plate. I still have him today and still love him. Pretty much everything I thought I liked went out the window when I bought the dolls lol.

    11. Yep. When I started at 16 I only wanted 30+ cm anime-looking boys.

Now I primarily collect girls - either really teeny tiny ones (under 20-25 cm) or ones bigger than 50 cm. And the more cartoony and stylized (but not anime-like), the better. I also now really enjoy realistic dolls.

    12. Hey, i recently had a break in the doll hobby last year and have come back into it early this year when i finally got my dream doll that had been on my wish list for a very long time, but before that i just collected any doll i liked which i kinda regret as they weren't what i wanted so i was never fully happy and plus it didn't help that i couldn't offered any lovely doll clothing as i had a really bad paying job but then i feel in love with the Minifee Mirwen, just something about her got my attached first time i saw her on the fairyland site. But every time i checked the website it was always out of stock and i had no idea what la carte ones where as im a complete novice still, so in January i saw a minifee mirwen for sale on ebay and really pretty but the pictures didn't give her a lot of justice so i went got her anyway and the excitement i had was crazy, then i saw her and she was beautiful she has a nomyens face up so you can imagine how beautiful, so now i love fairyland dolls i have 4 of them that i love so much and i now have a good paying job and i can now afford lovely clothing and make them into who i see them. At the moment i'm so happy with fairyland that i wont be changing yet, but you never know in the doll world :) if you read this then thanks for reading :)

    13. Yes and know. I still like the same styles (they never change really :) ). But if you are asking about the doll sizes, I started with SDs, sold them, and am turning now to 1/6 scale mature dolls. Before SDs, I had 12'' fashion dolls. They were kept a bit aside when I started the BJD hobby. Then, I came back to these smaller dolls, but this time, both fashion ones and resin BJDs :)

    14. I still have the same taste with sculpts and aesthetics but it has expanded. When I first learned about BJDs, I sought out male SD sculpts to shell out OCs, buying heads to later (or never lol) join with a body. Recently, I've been thinking it's not as satisfying to reshell characters I've had for years by just buying parts, almost as if they were never meant to be dolls. With the dolls I have now (all bought on a whim as full dolls), I've experienced more pleasure in starting from scratch with each one as a new character. However, I'm now leaning more towards female MSDs. I still love my SD boys but MSD girls are just so cute!

I have grown to have a broader appreciation for different feminine body types and skin colors as well... Leekeworld's pear-shaped Art bodies to Doll Chateau's strange thin bodies. I also never knew I wanted a pink tan or turquoise doll until I saw Lillycat Cerise Dolls either! That's one thing I've always strive for in my collection is diversity.

    15. I still have the same taste, but when i first started liking BJDs i didn't want boys in my collection at the time. I wanted girls. I have changed a lot, in that my first BJD head was an SD boy head XD. I am a bit more open minded now. I also thought i was "mature" enough, but for most people i recommend getting a bjd when you're at least 16 years old.:sweat I also didn't like pear shaped bodies on bjds , now I love them and think they are beautiful:aheartbea:loveI am currently raising money for a bjd.:aheartbea
Also I am interested in having vampire bjds in my collection now, when i was younger i didn't...:)

    16. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. At this point I think I've broken every "I'll never buy…" statement I've made about dolls.

    17. Yes! I had change of taste, quite a lot of times! before I got my first BJD, I wanted a gothic-lolita themed,
and then I got some other dolls and I wanted a "dressed up" kinda theme, not gothic, not lolita, but...
Not long after that I wanted them to show their legs more, or show more of their body,
Now, I wanted a simple and modern look for my dolls..

I keep changing my taste, even in face ups, but their characters have not really changed lol,
So what happens is that some of my dolls are failed-gothic, some are kinda mixed characters, but yes, they evolve :)

    18. Oh, so much.

At first, I only really liked anthro dolls - Pipos Bao was the first sculpt I fell in love with. I absolutely didn't like human sculpts, I don't know why. Not until I fell head-over-heels for the KDF Ttori. My Rikka. Then, I couldn't imagine myself owning more than one doll, or anything larger than an MSD...then Dita happened, and I couldn't in good conscience shell him without shelling Takeo, too! I also used to be exclusively drawn to a lot of "big name" or more well-known companies, early on. Soom in particular dazzled me! I found myself liking a lot more sculpts, and wanting to make characters for all of them.

Nowadays, though, I feel I've gotten pretty picky about what sculpts I like and what characters I want to shell. Also, my overall tastes have become more obscure. I find myself more and more drawn to artist BJDs, especially to unusually-sized dolls with proportions not common among the companies that were popular when I first got into the hobby.

Anthro dolls are still in the back of my mind, though. But now that I'm more picky with my dolls, I can't decide if I want one or not, or what sculpt I'd even get! DX

    19. When I first got into BJDs I weren't a big fan of dolls with anime-looking/unrealistic facial proportions, and my first doll was an Iplehouse girl. Then I got obsessed with Fairyland after falling in love with the mnf Chloe sculpt, & I have 3 of their sculpts on my wishlist (2 of which I already have the heads for). Now I like both styles. :)

    20. Nope they are still the same, im drawn to cute girl bid that are fashionable looking
