Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. He, She or It?

Nov 30, 2013

    1. I always call dolls by their gender, but it doesn't bother me if people call a doll it, especially if they aren't in the doll hobby. I'd be kind of insulted if someone called one of my pets "it" though. It seems mean somehow.

    2. I refer to my dolls by their gender :). Most people I know that are not into the doll hobby refer to my dolls as 'it', but that doesn't offend me. They don't have the same feelings as I do for my dolls and it's not like my dolls are my pets, they mean no harm. I don't mind if people see my dolls as ''things'', because they receive enough love from just me alone:lol:. The only thing that bothers me is when someone refers to Elvenia as ''that thing", like it's a dirty sock :|..

(Even though I only have one doll, I will often say ''my dolls", because I consider the ones I ordered as my dolls already too :p)

    3. nah its not weird, i call mine 'she'

i do it for anime figures and have done for years, it makes sense to refer to a character as their name or 'she' so for my DD dolls it was just natural to do the same and later to my resin bjd's as well.

others might think its weird though, not everyone understands as well as we do

    4. All our dolls - girls =)
There is one boy's head, but there is a desire to put her on the female body =)
How can I call the girls like "it"? =)

    5. I tend to call my dolls "It" like, "It is so cute!" and such. But I use it in that context even if it is a puppy, kitty, or a baby or toddler. I find "It" and easier and more attractive thing to say, and don't mind if someone calls me that either.

I do get corrected or yelled at, such as the time I kept sayin "Aww, it's so cute!" to someones baby, which is when I noticed I do that, and I try and not do it but if I am not planning ahead of time what I am saying then such things are "it"s.

I don't see anything wrong with assigning some manner of gender to an object, so calling a doll he or she is perfectly reasonable to me.

    6. I call my doll a "him". When I finally get my big girl then she will be a "she". I think this is normal for people to do. After all, if it looks like a guy we normally refer to them as a "him" unless we know otherwise. We don't look at an obvious girl and say that we think that "it" has a cute top on. We say "she".

This goes double for people who make dolls out of their own characters that they have created. To them, they are human (the characters) and by human conventions we call them him/her. It doesn't mean that they think that their own dolls can walk and talk by themselves though.

If I am talking to people that don't like dolls though, I do call my doll an "it" as much as I say him. And if I say him and they look confused, I just explain that to me he looks like a boy. They do get it because they talk in a similar way about fictitious movie/book/tv show characters.

    7. it depends who i'm talking to, my friends would probably be weirded out if i referred to my girl as "she", but in front of my mom and boyfriend I call her a she!

    8. My car is a she and my computer is a he... all of my gadgets have genders, characters, and names, so of course it follows that all of my dolls have the same and are referred to by gendered pronouns. I guess I just get really attached to things like that.

    9. Usually "she", but I sometimes refer to them as "it" when I'm talking to people I don't know, or my dad lel. I don't want to come off as crazy.

    10. I can't see myself calling my boy an it. He's a boy and I don't care if people think I'm weird for calling him a he.

    11. I refer to my dolls based on their gender. Whether they identify as he/she/ or gender neutral pronouns.

    12. He or she, Depending on gender, sometimes it's a they, I use the same kind of pronouns I would for a human.

    13. I tend to say 'he' or 'she'. I try to avoid this when I am out, especially in a coffee shop. The last time I mentioned 'taking her eyes out', there was shock at the next table.

    14. Definitely he, she, or they. There's too much personality there to be just it.

    15. I always say "he" and "she." I've only known one person to say "it," and I only just met her this week. I've been doing this roughly four years.

Your boyfriend needs to get over it. If that's "crazy" to him, he's being extremely narrow-minded. My ex was the same way. I gave up trying to explain how it's perfectly normal after the 12th attempt and just ignored her.

    16. He or she always. All my dolls are personalities for me.

    17. I don't have my first doll yet, but when she comes in I will use her gender pronoun when I'm not using her name.
I wouldn't call my characters "it".
I wouldn't call other fictional characters "it".
Not everything is androgynous, even if it is "just a doll" it is still is the representation of a character to most people.
Using "It" when the character identifies with a gender is just too impersonal for me.
I don't think it is crazy to call them "he/she" at all.

    18. Absolutely he/she all the way. I'm not the kind of person that talks as if my dolls are alive (i.e. "she really likes this dress"), but referring to gender is something that seems perfectly normal to me. That goes for my figures as well. I don't think I've ever had anyone refer to either as "it", but if they did, I wouldn't hesitate to correct them. (I never did get into the car/boat/etc. thing though.) However, I won't refer to a headless body as he or she.

I recall reading a comment from someone on another forum who said they thought it was creepy when people referred to their dolls as he or she, because they aren't real and don't have genders...but this sounds pretty flawed to me. When looking at a painting of a person, do you still not refer to them as he or she when commenting on them? I just don't buy it.

This isn't doll-related but it reminds me of my sister calling insects and spiders "him" and "he", which I think is adorable. For example, when there is a big scary spider in her house, she says things like "I think he went into the bedroom". She's no child either...she's 26!:XD: We're both pretty bad about things like that (I'm a year older), but the gender thing is exclusive to her.

    19. I use gendered pronouns when talking about the doll and her character. Sometimes I slip up and say "it" but it's not a big deal. I'll be dressing her and say to my mom "Hey, can you hand me her head?" Or if I'm going somewhere doll friendly I'll say "Ayano's coming with me, so that's where she is". Calling my doll it is always an accident.

    20. :)If my is a boy it's a boy and if it's a girl then it's a girl.
