It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

He, She or It?

Nov 30, 2013

    1. I engender everything... even yes, bugs and stuff, so I think it's super weird to call anything 'it' unless 'it' is a lamp or something like that. If it's got a face- it has a gender to me.

When talking to people about it though, instead of using my dolls names I'll refer to 'my redheaded girl' or 'my tiny one' because it's easier for my non doll people friends and family to take me seriously for some reason that if I say 'Arelia' or 'Cooper' or 'Ella'. I always thought referring to them by name would make it easier for my family to adjust but they just thought it was weirder, like they were my pets or something. *_*

    2. Well, in Finland we call basically everyone and everything (our friends, pets, grandparents and the president) 'it', so I call my doll 'it'. It feels weird calling my or anyone else's dolls 'he' or 'she', since using those words is really uncommon here in Finland. :'D And to be honest, when people call their dolls 'he' or 'she', it's kind of creepy.
But when I'm speaking English I refer to my dolls as 'he' and 'she' since it feels natural. I think it's because I've seen most doll people call their dolls that way. ^^

    3. If someone called one of my dogs "it", I would probably be offended and think they were trying to insult me x_x; The dolls are more understandable, because they aren't really alive and even if they have genders, it's not like they have functioning parts like animals do. Still, all my dolls have specific genders and I don't want anyone calling them "it" I'll always try to correct that.

    4. When I talk about dolls, I say that it is a she if it's a female, and he if it's a male. If the doll seems to want an alternate pronoun, I wouldn't mind doing it... but so far, I've ordered two boys and a girl so he and she they are. :)

It makes me uncomfortable to call them it, even though they're not real. They're important to me, so they are real. That's how I think about it.

    5. If I'm just referring to a headless body, it's an It... though I've heard other people use human pronouns for those too. Not having a head/face just relieves it of the human quality for me.

But yeah, actual complete dolls (and floating heads) I always call she/he/they etc... (and if I'm not sure about the gender I ask) P: I've always sort of personified objects (yeah I'm strange) so personifying dolls seems pretty normal to me.

    6. I pretty much always call my dolls she... it's just more natural to me. I think that you should just stick to whatever feels natural for you to do. I don't think it's weird at all, because although the dolls don't technically have genders, they're modeled after humans, and we do. I also call my pets by he and she, I couldn't imagine calling them "it."

    7. She. As doll is a feminine word in my language and my doll is a girl. So 'she' can be used either for the character represented by the doll, or the object that is the doll.

    8. My dolls have always had genders. They look like boys and girls, so that's how I address them. Everyone around me does, too.

    9. They have faces, genders & aren't neutered so my dolls get called 'he' or 'she'

    10. I refer them to "he" or "she" and sometimes I just call their name like a person. :) My friends and my family do so too. My mom likes to ask..."Where is Ren today?" Haha! I don't know why but my mom remembers only "Ren" (my first doll) and she called "white head" to Katsuki and "little kid" to Fayy. I guess all my dolls will progress to have new nickname soon...

    11. I personally refer to my little ones as he/she, since I feel that while they are technically non-living things, they are little people in a way. And mine have obvious personalities and genders all their own...

    12. Most of the time I say he/she, but if I'm talking to a person who's not keen on the idea of that, I just say it.

    13. I usually refer to them with he or she or with the names and I don't care if it looks strange for unfamiliar with the hobby people. My friends refer to them the same and even say "hello" so if we go crazy we go together  But seriously, we call our pets he/she because they are the parts of our family. Aren't dolls the same?

    14. I usually would refer to my dolls by their gender because it seems to feel natural and not because I think they are 'alive'.

But when I talk about them to non doll people I refer to them as 'it' because if they might think it's weird.

    15. I refer to my dolls by their gender pronouns or by their names.

    16. I think it's completely normal to refer to your dolls by their gender pronouns. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable :)

    17. I think it depends on the person but I like giving dolls pronouns over just calling them an item. I know when I get my Mei doll it will most likely be a they or he over any thing.

    18. I don’t think it’s weird at all to use he or she instead of it. I mean, the dolls do have genders even if they aren’t living. I had a friend get bent out of shape because when I accidentally knocked my doll over on his side I apologized to him and asked him if he was okay when I checked him over. He said that it made me sound crazy, but it’s not like I’m deluded about fantasy and reality, I tend to talk aloud like that. I talk to my cat also and some people even find that odd. I can’t imagine calling a pet it.

    19. It actually depends. Sometimes, I end up using the term 'it' to refer to my doll, more often than not though, I refer to my doll as 'she'. For me, though I know she's just an object, it still just kind of feels odd to refer to my doll as 'it' for some reason. xD;;

    20. The majority of the time, I refer to my dolls with the appropriate gendered pronouns. :) Even though they're dolls, they're real to me.
