Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. He, She or It?

Nov 30, 2013

    1. I refer to my dolls by their gender pronouns and also by their names,I personally just wouldn't feel right by calling them 'it'...just as I wouldn't call my dog 'it',though he is a living being and the dolls are not it just seems right to me.

    2. I haven't bought my first doll, yet. However, in my mind I refer to the doll I plan on purchasing as a she. I even have a name picked out for her. There you go, I just referred to the doll as a "her". :)

    3. I have a male doll and I always call him 'he'. hehe. I haven't picked a name for him yet though :(

    4. It doesn't make a lot of sense to call the doll an it unless I'm talking about the doll as it exists as an object. When talking about dolls I usually am referring to the character I've given to the doll, or how the doll behaves in relation to the character. At that point the character of the doll and the doll as an object sort of become one, I think, because then the doll itself adds to its character. And that's usually how the people who I'm friends with in the hobby refer to their dolls. My best friend has a doll he got from a friend because she seemed to "behave" with him unlike with his previous owner. And she would only behave around another doll he owned, going so far as to snap around her in suggestive poses naturally. The doll she behaves around also only ever sits properly in her lap, as well. Thus, now the dolls are girlfriends. It's obviously not that the dolls themselves are girlfriends since neither is sentient, but the characters attached to the dolls are.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that there's a difference between the doll as a character and the doll as a doll, and sometimes the two can overlap, so it's not crazy to refer to them as their respective genders.

    5. I refer to mine to whatever gender I gave it. I beleive them to be characters ans should be referred like that.

    6. This is so strange to read because??? Yeah, it's an object, but your doll is a character as well and the character usually has a gender. (not gonna be nit picky but there is more genders than just "he" and "she") My boy is definitely a boy, though, and no one can tell me otherwise.

    7. I've recently just gotten my first doll, for the most part I've called him by his gender. Even with my friends and parents I call him by his gender or I just refer to him as "my boy." I've just recently named him so at times I'll use that but I have yet to call him "it."

    8. I usually flip back and forth between calling Lucy "him" and not. Often when speaking to people outside of the hobby I just call him "my doll". I don't even use his name when it could be appropriate. I just never know how someone will react. In those cases I usually distance myself from personifying him. "Hahaha yeah...I DON'T think of him as a small person who lives with me. Hahaha. That would be crazy!" Nervous laughter continues.

    9. By gender - it feels weird saying "it." Then again, I also call my car "she."

    10. Oh my! To me they are not "it" items at all. They are always she or he.

    11. Ha-ha!)
it's defanately she/he. In my language I can sometimes say he/she about a refregerator or a coffee machine.
So it doesn't sound too strange anyway. It would be much more strange if I said "it".

    12. I refer to my dolls by their gender when talking to people who understand they have more thought behind them then just objects, but to everyone else I refer to them as "its" because they are objects to those people.

    13. One thing I love about this hobby is the acceptance and embracement of gender neutrality. As doll owners we have the power to create a specific vision without having to explain or justify our choices. This hobby (for the most part) is also very open-minded and does not discriminate against race, gender, age, etc. I never once found myself judging another person in this hobby. If they choose to call their doll a she, he, it or a toaster...I am always respectful of their decision.

And as a side note, MangaAnimeLover, you are definitely NOT crazy. Personification of dolls is completely natural, especially when they are crafted in such a realistic manner. Also, are children labeled crazy when they play with dolls and assign them a gender? Just do what makes you happy :aheartbea

    14. I'm sure someone has already said it at some point but some people calls their cars "she". Not so weird for us to call our dolls he/she seeing as the doll/character actually has a gender. ._.

    15. my doll is a she but i want to get a he. :)

    16. Usually male. Some female and mostly gender queer characters.

    17. How is it a sign of crazy at all? The dolls have gender, There's no way it's weirder to call a doll a he or she than it is to call a plane/car/boat etc. a he or she. Would he think you were weird for calling Barbie a she? Because she is a girl.

I would hope ALL people called their dog by their correct gender and not 'it' since they are living, reproducing creatures with actual specific genitals to their sex.

Anyway, I refer to the doll as what their gender is and if I don't know, I will call it by what it looks like until otherwise corrected. Then I will call it by the pronoun it is suppose to be, or what the owner wants it to be.

    18. I always call William he. He is a male doll. I have no real opinion on this, this is just something I do. My stuffed bunny who has been with me for years is also referred to as he.

    19. All of my dolls are girls, so "she" is what comes naturally. "They" and "it" bubble up at random, but not frequently. It is unpredictable and not influenced by any great sense of the "living vs inanimate" definition. I often refer to inanimate non gendered items as "she" as well, such as my car or plushies/pillows. It's a subconscious association between things that are helpful/useful/comforting being like friends, which for me, are primarily girls.

    20. If the general population is ok with calling cars and ships She, I'll use whatever pronoun I see fit :P. Yes, inanimate, not human, but it's gonna be a She.
