Head colour doesn’t match body colour

Dec 5, 2023

    1. Hi all,

My luts event head body arrived today and I’m devastated… it doesn’t match. The size is perfect but the colouring is off… has this happened to anyone else before?

The luts head is normal skin colour.
Asleep Eidolon Body is also normal skin colour.. but it seems like the head is more yellow and the body is whiter.

Does anyone know why this may be? … is it because they’re from different companies?

      thanks all

    2. Yes, many companies have differing resin colurs for their standard skintones, it's something you need to investigate before you buy if you're hybriding.

How far off are the colours? Can you share pictures.

I personally don't mind a bit of a mismnatch on the grounds that numans face colour is very rarely exactly the same shade as their body, so (to me) it doesn't look odd if dolls heads and bodies don't match exactly - although a lot depends on HOW different they are.

    3. Mismatched colors is a risk with hybrids. No two companies will be an exact match for each other, unless they're cast by the same company.

You could blush the body to match the head, or vice versa.

I'm sorry the mismatch was a disappointing surprise for you. :c

    4. Well… yes.

Each company might have different casting companies working with them and a different range of normal colours, some are more yellow and some more pink, and it is recommended to do your search before buying a different parts or you can find yourself in this situation (I also have been there, perfect match but not size and perfect size but not match).

Luckily you can always send the head to a make up artist with a part of the body (hands, for example) and request that they resin match the head with the hands before applying the make up.

    5. So, you had an Asleep Eidolon body and you ordered a Luts head to go on it?

Companies use all different resin colors. Sometimes they match by coincidence, sometimes they match because they are casted from the same resin. But usually different companies do not match each other perfectly. "Normal skin" is a term many companies use, but this does not mean the resins are the same color. We must do a lot of research beforehand to determine if our desired doll hybrids will match.

    6. When companies have their dolls cast, they choose the color palette they want their line to be made in. Since it's an aesthetic choice by the artist/company, not everyone is going to choose the same color range.

Also, companies may update and change their palette, they might change casting companies, they can change resin mixtures over time. And we are also taking about dye lots, so there can be some natural variation. So even the same brand might not match between 2022 and 2023 etc.

Some companies are known for color consistency and others are a lot less reliable.
I've never known Luts to be color consistent over time, and I learned that attempting to make my own hybrids with their dolls. I bought doll bodies after seeing other members make hybrids that matched heads I bought from another brand... only when the bodies arrived they didn't match at all. Yes, I did this more than once.

I also have decided that I don't require a 100% match. I'll take anything above an 80% match and make it work with blushing, clothing, and knowing that most peoples faces don't match their bodies. As long as the head to body proportion are good, 80% is good enough.

    7. I'm sorry it caught you by surprise! Companies all have their own special mixes of colours - sometimes the tones also vary or change within different batches in the same company as well.

All is not lost, though! All my dolls are hybrids and none of them match perfectly, I don't really mind personally. It's always harder to tell a difference between head/body than differing body/hands for instance, so it's definitely not the worst of all bad match situations, especially with the size being good!

There are many ways to fix it, too. The easiest would be to have the head blushed to match the body, but that is less successful if the head is darker. I see yours already has a faceup, so there's an option to blush or dye the body to match the head instead. It also becomes way less noticeable with clothes and wig on, and you can always do a little bit of Photoshop if it bothers you in photos.

Matching is hard for all of us, it's ok :)

    8. You can easily fix the colour by painting either the head or the body or both, and yes, it's because companies use different shades and colours for their dolls.

My Dika Doll Aron head and Resinsoul body are a terrible match, they are both normal, but the head was a much darker shade and Resinsoul looked practically white in caparison. I ended up painting the head the paler shade to match the Resinsoul body, I used acrylic for this.

One time I matched a body to a head by doing several layers of water colour. It made a great match, but later I ended up buying the company body in the dolls skin tone. I was able to easily remove the layers of water colour when I was done using the body for that head.

      This is the head mismatched...

And this is with the water coloured body...

    9. As a collector of less-than-ideal hybrids I'm sure this is a disappointing surprise for you, but it happens sometimes. Sometimes even when you did lots of research to try to pick a good match! Hopefully it won't ruin your fun.
I've gotten very very lazy with my dolls in recent years as I have less money and energy resources to make them more perfect. When I have badly matched heads... Which is to say, most of mine now are not resin matches I would rate over 80% close... I can fudge the look with makeup styles (I do not even mean full resin matching because I got tired of doing it on the heads) or even creative optical illusions with the right hair and clothing colors.
Good enough for you is what matters. I hope you can get your doll the way you want them though. There are definitely lots of resources here to help :aheartbea

    10. I have 2 heads that aren't quite color matched to their bodies. One head has a body and while I can see it when he is undressed, I don't see it when he is dressed. I don't know if I ever saw it in photos.

The other head is very badly yellowed and well...he has yet to find a body. He might get one someday...or a bust.

    11. It could be because they're different companies, but it could also be due to age. Resin is always going to mellow or yellow over time, and different companies use different formulas so that will look differently over time as well. If the head is older, that could be part of it. And if the head has a faceup, the sealant can also age over time and make the head appear more yellow, especially depending on factors in its previous owner's environment if it was second hand.
The good news is you can often get them close with some blushing or dyeing!

    12. I am sorry to hear that you're disappointed. Unfortunately, it's a risk and it's more common than we usually think. I have a hybrid and I managed to get his head matching close enough to his body. Body blushing and clothing helped. I always try to match my face and hands as my dolls are mostly fully clothed and it's what can be seen in pictures.

I second everything that was said before. Depending on the resin batch (the year the doll/body was made) different companies, etc you can get different results and matches. It's like a lottery.

I am actually researching a lot of bodies for a head that I am waiting for and it's a nightmare.

I just this didn't put you off the hobby or the doll itself. This is a very crafty DIY hobby and I really hope you can find a solution. There's tons of help in the forum, tutorials on YT and blogs.

    13. This is me as well. As long as it's in spitting distance, I can make it work. At this point, I'm more worried about proportion and stylistically matching than the resin being perfect. I've even bought a whiteskin body on the MP for a very pale normal skin head because I knew it was close enough. And as has been noted, even buying from the same company can result in a mismatch because of resin batches and the like. Impldoll is a prime example of a company that really changed their resin formulation (but not their sales pictures) and as a result, a lot of folks ordered tans or realskins and got something entirely different than what they expected.

    14. I have plenty of dolls that don’t perfectly match their bodies!! The most egregious I can think of is probably Amor—she’s an NS head on a semi-white dd body. I just tell myself that her face looks like she’s wearing a ton of makeup, because that suits her character. Her twin sister, Aura is also a bad resin/vinyl match, and I don’t really mind. If I was willing to wipe them, I’d easily be able to blush a better match, but both have faceups I’m trying to protect.

at the end of the day, only you can know what’s a good enough match for you. If this bothers you, maybe you can look for a head or body that would better match, there’s a lot of resin comparisons on this forum.

    15. omg I love that so much that it fits her character and you have made it work! I think I'm doing to leave the head for now till I can get her a body. I have just got myself a new full (head and body) doll so I'm currently super happy with her and working on her :)

      Thank you for your reply.

    16. What everyone said about coloring the head to match, but honestly I feel like after a faceup there's often contrast with the body/head even on non-hybrid dolls, unless you actually blush the body too. It happens and is fixable!

    17. I second this, and also if you keep a faceup for a long time MSC will yellow differently than the resin will so that can also create a mismatch between body, head, and headcap.
