1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Head/eye question

Nov 29, 2024

    1. I am not new to DoA but I really am pretty new to BJD's. I was looking at a particular doll to buy and it is asking me to choose an open eyes head, a sealed eyes head or both. I have no idea what any of those terms mean. Can anyone explain for me please?
      Thanks!!

    2. Sealed eyes means that the eyes must be painted on. These dolls are not on topic here. Open means glass/acrylic/resin eyes can be inserted into the head.

    3. "Sealed eyes" might also mean that the head is a "sleeping" head (sculpted with the eyes closed).

So, unless you want a doll with closed eyes (or painted on eyes as @nyaaain said) choose the open eyes option.

    4. If you're looking at Granado for their current sale, it's exactly what @nyaaain said! They offer their heads with the option to paint on eyes rather than have to insert them. That style is off-topic for DoA, while the open eyed heads are on topic.

There's nothing wrong with either version; they're just for different types of collectors! I personally like to be able to shift which direction a doll is looking rather than being stuck with a painted direction.

    5. As the above commenters have already said, and specifically for Granado, the sealed eyed heads have sculpted eyes for you to paint. However, they are also smaller than the opened eyed, or removable eyed version of the head, for their tiny line. I follow the discussion thread for their tinies on here, I recall a user who owned one of the girls not being completely happy, because the eyes didn't look quite the same. It partly was because the iris on the "sealed" eyed head were painted smaller, but mostly because the head with the opened eyes had the eyes opened way bigger. Granado uses the sealed eyed version for the promo of their tiny dolls, a lot more often than not. They don't appear to mention it, they might believe it is obvious to most.

However, it is something to keep in mind if you like the smaller/narrower eyes look of the heads in their tiny BJD promos, because the opened eyed heads tend to have larger opened eyes. I am not sure if a sealed eyed Granado, would be considered on-topic, if you were to open the eyes yourself, but if you don't care about on-topicness, the sealed eyed heads are what you are seeing in most of their tiny BJD promos. Hope that is of additional help. (:
