Headcap vs Faceplate style — does it matter to you?

Jun 8, 2021

    1. Do you have a strong preference for one over the other, or is it completely secondary to the look of a doll? Is one or the other more annoying/convenient for you based on doll size? Would the difference cause you to dismiss a doll you might otherwise be bonkers for?

    2. I prefer head caps for sure. Faceplates stress me out when I have to remove them. :sweat
I have dolls with both, but yeah, that's my personal preference.

    3. I like faceplates, but I have no strong preference either way as long as the head stays in one piece when it's supposed to. xD

    4. First, some faceplates have relatively weak magnets and might fall down easily. Second, for me faceplates are very uncomfortable to hold while painting and sealing.

    5. Definitely prefer headcaps. A lot of faceplates don't have strong enough magnets or proper latches so they fall off. The only time I think faceplates are preferable is if it comes with a bunch in different expressions, and then it better have good magnets. Having faceplates won't stop me from buying if I really like the sculpt though.

    6. I prefer headcaps too. Like @Icefall said : not enough strong magnets on faceplates and it's less handleable for faceup.

    7. Makes no difference to me, I'm more interested in the look of the complete doll.

For a while I thought faceplates were a good idea for easily changing the doll's expression/look/mood without taking off the head to swap for another (which I never get around to doing) , but it turns out I never get around to swapping out faceplates (or hands, or feet) either.

I have all the alternative faceplates, hands, feet, ears, unicorn horns etc. for the Unoa Chibi girls, but they haven't been changed out in years, judt like the alternative head for one of my older dolls hasn't been oout of it's box in.. ten years (?) maybe...

    8. I prefer face plate, but I own mostly old-school-BJD, so most of mine are heads with caps. I only own two with the plates, and I far prefer them because it's easier to remove for realistic clothes (that don't have an opening on the back, or front). They are easier for me to modify, to redo face ups on, and also clean or just the minimal change of eyes/positioning. It makes it super easy as well when switching between different expressions. I was excited when Fairyland released their Chiclines, because I thought I could finally own a doll with multiple expressions, but they kind of didn't last, so I only got the two default ones for my own doll. If I could magically have all my dolls with face plates, I would choose to go that route. I never had any issues with the magnets on my face plates. Magnetic hands, are another story...

Edit to add: If I ever saw a doll I really wanted to own, I wouldn't stop myself based on the head system. I just prefer face plates, but they are not a deal breaker.

    9. I know faceplates have some advantages, like easier removal, but I prefer the headcap style. One of my earlier dolls (I have since sold him) had a faceplate, and it fell off rather often, including onto a hard concrete floor. I've encountered faceplate dolls at meetups who have lost their faces during the meet. While the one faceplate doll I have is pretty sturdy, and her magnets have never failed, I can't help but be paranoid about it.

And as a minor complaint, I'm not super fond of the line around the face that is created by the faceplate.

    10. Yeah, I own majority headcap style, but I think that faceplate style is more useful when it's done well. I really like the system that both fairyland and my dollmore zaoll use where it's also has grooves for the head to lock onto and not just relying on magnets. I prefer to removing a faceplate to change out clothes and the like. Really, anything that makes it easier for me to change out my dolls outfits is what I prefer but I wouldn't say that it would be a make or break thing for me. It's not usually something I think too much about though

    11. Outside of animal/creature bjds, I prefer headcaps because I don't like the seam created on faceplate. The fact so many faceplates sound like they are randomly prone to popping off, also sounds rather stressful. Ironically at the same time, I am also the sort that really likes dolls/sculpts that come with a ton of expressions (which mostly is only ever done with faceplates). :doh

    12. I also prefer headcaps as the idea of faceplates stresses me out. I'm clumsy enough, touching the faceplate to do anything would make it worse. That being said, if I liked a sculpt enough and it had multiple expressions, I might be willing to get it.

    13. If I loved a doll it wouldn't matter, but I really like faceplates. I sew and crochet for my doll and being able to remove her faceplate to try things on her is so much easier than removing her whole head to protect her faceup. I put her faceplate in a little Tupperware container and her wig in another and sew without a worry.

    14. I much prefer headcaps. Faceplates fall off too easily and are hard to hold for faceups.

    15. I have both, but prefer headcaps. The weak magnets are fine for a tiny, but a 1/3 I have has her faceplate on her lap most of the time. It keeps coming off, which I think is why the company doesn't sell her anymore.

    16. It doesn't really matter to me, because in the end both types require masking tape to stay on :sweat

    17. Headcaps all the way. I've just had bad luck with the fit and stability of every single face-plated doll I own.

    18. For me, unless there’s multiple expressions to switch between, it’s just pointless to have a faceplate. Head cap is more convenient

    19. I prefer the faceplate. I can take it off for redressing without ruining the face up, and changing eyes in small heads is so much easier with a faceplate. I have two dolls with small heads and the s hook is in the way of changing the tiny eyes, and I got the head off one which didn't help much and now can't get the s hook pulled up again so I am frustrated. I have new eyes coming that I want to try on her so she is sitting here headless and I will need to figure out how to pull that s hook back up...it isn't a full s hook it is like partial s with a loop that the string is attached to and the open s top has no ribbon or anything to pull and since it is only a half s no idea how on earth to pull that up and the head is so tiny I can't get my fingers in there anyway :(
A faceplate would have alleviated this issue.

    20. As far as purchasing, one or the other isn't going to make or break a purchase for me, but I do like faceplates as a bit easier to handle when I'm switching out expressions (and taking up less space when I'm storing the spares). I also find them easier to pop off when dressing a doll; some clothes that won't fit over the full head will fit just fine when the faceplate's removed. And it's easier to position the eyes, too. :)
