Heavy resin!

Jul 14, 2023

    1. Hi folks! I'm looking for experiences here: which companies have heavy vs light resin? Do the heavy ones always feel sturdier? Tell me your experiences!

I've noticed some subtle differences in my mature ¼ dolls' weights over time (Souldoll, Iplehouse, Unoa, and Dollshe, to name a few) but it's a little harder to tell. Meanwhile when i had my ⅓ boys there was a HUGE difference! My LUTS Senior Delf was very heavy and my Resinsoul 72cm was nearly as light as my ¼. But my LUTS boy had the most gorgeous toothy resin and was solid as a rock. I have no complaints about the Resinsoul in comparison; he didn't feel as solid but i was never afraid that he'd be in danger of damage (okay, except when he was sitting without leaning on something, but that's mostly stringing and posing, i was afraid he'd fall).

    2. Volks and Iplehouse have been the heaviest in my experience. At least for 1/3 scale or big baby 1/4. I absolutely love thick resin and chonky dolls, and to me they do feel a lot sturdier. Thinnest I have ever had personally was by Clockwork Faery. The resin was so thin that I thought it was PVC at first and was terrified of breaking it.

    3. I have a Luts Grand Senior Delf body and it is so light compared with my Soom 75cm bodies. The Luts body is a year or so old, so maybe they are using a lighter resin for their bigger bodies? It really helps with the posing tbh, really threw me though when first handling the GSD.

    4. Very similar experiences, especially witu Clockwork Faery.

Volks is very sturdy, even their older models, but aren't particularly heavy. I think it has a lot to do with the quality of the resin, rather than thickness alone.

    5. Goodness gracious that Clockwork Faery is thin :ablink: i would be nervous too!

    6. I think withdoll has heavier resin than dolls from other companies that I have. It is that toothy solid feeling that I love to handle. I feel like the dolls with smooth resin are lighter and slightly more delicate.

    7. I haven't purchased many BJD in modern times, because of my extreme dislike of resin -- I was younger when I got my earlier six/seven BJD, so I was kind of adventurous, but as an old-fart I'm a lot more fastidious about my toys aging poorly. The heaviest doll I own is my 62cm SoulDoll Paris, he feels much heavier, and his resin feels much more studier than my taller 67cm Limhwa Limho Mano. Whom I would assume would be heavier, due to his size, but his walls are not as thick as my Paris. The resin itself feels heavier however, not just the thickness. I wouldn't say my Paris' resin is toothier, I feel Limhwa's is probably toothier. Having said that, both those dolls are ancient and it's probable that neither company uses similar resins anymore. I'm not a fan of heavier dolls however, I don't usually associate heaviness with higher quality -- as a weak scrawny-old-fart, I prefer lighter weight toys, more so if dressing them, or just posing them will be a struggle for my noodle arms. Barbie is probably paper-light, but she would still survive the apocalypse, neither my Paris nor my Mano would last a short flight of stairs, I fear. (:

    8. In my experience, generally the Korean and Japanese dolls have a heavier resin, and a less smooth one than the Chinese ones, on average. (But within the Chinese there is a lot of variety ( from heavy to really light and plastic'y). I've held some European bjds, but it was either heavy and translucent or light. I didn't like either. (I've had at least 3 European BJDs to my best knowledge).

Currently, my heaviest doll (in proportion to its size) is my petite zaoll. Also, I was positively surprised by the new Angel of Dream, boy body (62cm), because although it was plastic'y smooth, it was reasonably heavy. Not the heaviest in proportion, but nice. As for my volkses... I remember that my sd10 girl seemed heavier than my sd13, but maybe it was so because of the unjointed torso. They are heavy, but within reason. Ones of the heaviest dolls I've held though. My doll family a boy is probably my lightest, even though he is pleasantly plumpish (in the old bjd standards) and it'd seem just by looking at him that he's a bit heavier.

I remember I only had a buffy boy once and I didn't like it. And he wasn't even the biggest xD his torso seemed too heavy in comparison to his slim long legs.

I also had several resinsouls that were mentioned above and their resin was really average and likeable.

My lightest and thinnest resin in my bc kaorin's head. I like it, nevertheless.

    9. I think what the OP is talking about is resin density -- somethinglike mass-to-height/volume ratio. At least, that's how I define it for myself: whether resin is dense or not dense.

I first really noticed this when I owned a Volks MSD and a Soom Little Gem, and was astounded by how lightweight the LG felt versus the MSD. That was one of the reasons I sold the LG shortly after I received it: it felt insubstantial compared to the MSD, less fun to play with. Of the dolls I have bought (admittedly not many), Volks and Dollstown resin felt the most dense. I think this density adds a lot to their presence because it contributes to how a doll poses. I know in my head that lightweight resin isn't a sign of "cheapness", but somehow I feel a bit let down when I hold a doll that seems lightweight.

I think resin texture is a separate thing from density, and it comes from how the dolls are made and finished, not country of origin. I recently received a Dream Valley (Chinese) doll and I think its resin texture is on par with Volks (Japanese) and Dollstown (Korean) (also my gold standard) -- smooth but a bit toothy, not "plasticky" at all. OTOH, my Doll Family-H (Chinese) doll feels more plasticky than the others in texture, and a little bit less dense. So I think it depends on company.

I play with and pose my dolls a LOT, I'm constantly touching, handling, carrying them - so I've become very aware of resin density and texture, and they contribute a great deal to my enjoyment. When the resin feels good to the touch, and the doll feels deliciously heavy in my hands, it makes me want to play more with them!

    10. Density definitely figures into it, yes-- but not just how heavy the resin is for volume, i also mean how much resin is there for the height. Like that thin one in the first response would make me nervous! But i also prefer dolls that have sturdier-feeling resin and thicker construction.

Ran into this again last night-- they don't pose well but that's part of the reason i continue to love Souldoll so much. They feel very sturdy to me as well as being really lovely to look at~

    11. I only have on SD boy and one SD girl, but I have loads of MSDs.

My Luts kids are shorter than my Resinsoul Wu, but they're definitely heavier. In addition, my Soom boy is physically smaller than them and is much lighter than both the Luts kids and the Resinsoul.

I have a Dika Doll boy who is the same height as my Resinsoul boy, and they are both similar in weight, but the Dika Doll boy is physically thicker and more built.

That said, the tallest in my collection of MSDs is my DIM girl, but she is very slim and about the same weight as the Soom boy.

Gosh this feels like one of those logic puzzles, lol.

    12. My heaviest doll is Nora (SupiaDoll Nael head on NobilityDoll muscle female body, cca 61cm). Which is odd because it's not my biggest doll (I have 35-65cm BJDs). The resin is so strong and heavy! Most of her weight is in her thighs, which are very muscular. I hope someday I can tame her body. When she kicks, it really hurts. In character!

    13. @Arengil a few months back I dug out my pholonus with the fantasy legs (which have muscular thighs too) and wow, had forgotten how heavy he was with them :sweat

    14. Heavy resin - definitely my Anthony - Ring Doll Norman 3.0 on the RGMbody-5. Its head has a wall thickness of 8 mm...
