Height differences and Pairing dolls

Jun 5, 2015

    1. I have a question on how you size your doll couples. I have an OC pair and they have a nice size height difference. He's supposed to be a tall guy and she's an average sized woman. I have a Loongsoul Aoyue ( 80cm ) on order and my plan was to have an iplehouse Asa ( 65cm ) as his wife. I've never had dolls this big before. My largest is currently a F60 moe. I'm wondering if 80/65 would be a nice comfortable height difference or if she would be too short and I need to look for a taller female body.

I would love to see your couples and their heights!

    2. I don't have any pictures yet, but my 5'5 character, Sevaal, is dating my BF's chara Rex, who is 6'7. Sev is on 60 CM body and Rex is a dollshe hound, so 70 cm. I can't wait for Rex to be complete so we can do cute pics of them and their height dif!

    3. I'd love to see pics when he's done. I think if I see a 10cm difference I might be able to make a better choice. But for sure his shell isn't changing. Aoyue is 100% perfection.

    4. IMO 15 cm difference is kind of a lot. I have a character that is supposed to be a full foot and a half shorter then her hubby and she is on a 60cm body and he on a 70cm body and that looks about right to me. But I don't know the exact proportions of your characters. I guess the best way to tell would be to make like a cardboard mock up of the height of the doll and put it next to one with the height of the other doll. Sort of plot out what the doll's overall shape would be so you can see if you like how they look side by side without ordering the doll. Pictures are great but I know having a visual right in front of me in scale with my surroundings has been very helpful.

I can't wait to see your Aoyue, he has such an expressive face! Asa is a beauty too so I hope everything works out for you.

    5. That's a good idea, thanks! I hope it works out too. Since I'm definitely not changing Aoyue and I have all the plans for his body blushing in place if I have to change anything I'll be changing the sculpt for his wife. Though Asa was my #1 choice. I have to drag out our character sheets again and see how much taller he's supposed to be. I know he's 5'11" so I'll make a mockup and if I have to search for a more proportionate doll/body.

    6. It all depends, tbh.
I've seen a 75cm beside a 65cm doll and it didn't really look appealing to me :( I look for just a few cm taller for the guy. For example: if the girl is 58-60cm , I would personally go with 63-65.
But that's just me! I really hope you like your dolls :D As long as you like it, do it!

    7. 65 and 80 doesn't sound bad for a pair that are supposed to have a big difference in height. The scales are still close enough that they ought to both look like "grown ups" posed together.

My own "mismatched" pair... Mourning Dove, the Sidereal Chosen of Endings (a 56cm FectDoll Patiya) and the Scribe of Sorrows, the Daybreak caste Abyssal deathknight (a 72cm Doll Chateau Dolores)... have a similar size difference and they look fine together. Their height difference is pretty much par for what a short woman and a very tall guy would look like standing together in real life.

The real question will be how closely their sculptural styles match. A very realistic sculpt next to a very stylized one would look odd.... Or one with small features/small head next to one with over-sized features/large head. That may end up being even more of a factor than their relative heights.

My 70cm Dollzone Yuu and 63cm (in her heels) Dollzone Cherry. I really like the height difference between them, though they weren't a couple for very long. LOL!!

Duke (the Yuu pictured) has also been a couple with a 58cm girl (Angell Studio Kana), but I find the height difference a little awkward because they can't look into each other's eyes easily.

To me, few things are more frustrating than two dolls who can't look at each other when I want them to! Luckily DZ Yuu is a sculpt that can look WAY down.

    9. Thanks everyone for the input and photos!

Brightfires ~ I think that the sculpts are similar enough in style to work ( as mentioned before iple Asa and Loongsoul Aoyue ) they're both very mature realistically sculpted. I think if I could get the height right that it could work.

galatia9 ~ After seeing your 58cm girl with your 70 boy I'm thinking that 15cm might be too much of a difference for my needs. In writing she's only supposed to be a head shorter than him.

    10. So funny thing... I was talking to my friend ( who created the male character I'm shelling ) and we were talking about the pair. He's 6'11" and she's 5'5" not 5'7" like I thought. My girl is a shortie. And there's a great height comparison tool I found on tumblr so I looked at the comparison in feet. Then I used inches ( since they don't have cm ) and 80cm :: 65cm is exactly proportional to their heights....... So my characters might not be able to look each other in the eye but they're going to be accurately represented if I get Asa to pair with my Aoyue.... So I guess I don't have a problem!

    11. For my main height-mismatched couple, I started with the one definite doll and looked for another who'd be proportionate to him. (Though, to be fair, I've used him as the reference point for all the dolls in the group, since he was the first and most definite one chosen.) And then I searched through taller options to find one I liked, searched through comparison photos to see how they stacked up, and eventually just decided to go for it. Their height difference is wonderful, and I adore the way they look together, which is the most important part.

Real people can have some pretty drastic height differences, so as long as both dolls look like a similar maturity level, the height is somewhat secondary, and can be a lot of fun to play with.

MSD-scaled, so not totally relevant to the OP's main question, but for the discussion overall, this shows their height difference nicely. (Both are in shoes, but both have similarly sized soles; the blond's might have just a bit more heel.)

    12. Hmmm...well, personally, I don't mind a 15cm difference in large dolls. These two are not a couple, but Mariella is 4'10" in character (50cm doll), and Jack is 6'4" in character (64cm doll), so here's what 14cm difference looks like. In even larger dolls, the difference will be even less drastic.

I think it's actually about right for them. In character, they're 18" difference, and she's standing just below his shoulder. I'm 5'5", my husband is 6'2", and the top of my head is chin level on him. So if at 9" difference I'm chin level, then at 18" difference, being below shoulder height is fine.

I think the important thing is to be sure proportions work right. I once owned a Soom Idealian 51, and though his height would have made him okay next to standard SD size, just a short guy, his proportions were horrible to match. His head was a couple sizes smaller than all of my SD crew, and he looked ridiculous next to them. he needed to be the big guy in an MSD world, not little guy in SD world!

People come in all sizes, so if you ever worry there's too much height difference in your doll couple, go Google Shaq and his girlfriend. They're real living breathing people, but look almost like an SD/MSD couple! It might not be common, but it happens! ;)

    13. I got a 55cm boy for Amiga, my 60cm girl, and it just didn't work out. She could only see him as a little brother. The height difference wasn't that big, but still, it just didn't look or feel right.

    14. 70cm to 11cm dolls.

The tallest are 70-60-45 red skirt is a 30ish, the tinies are 11-12cm.

10cm would give about a one head height difference for adults.

    15. This is a 15.5cm difference, pretty much what you're talking about.

That's my SD10 Saki (55cm) with her big brother, an Infinitidoll Louis on an SSDF body (70.5cm). I think the height difference is cute, but her character is about 5'0 and he's supposed to be 6'3 so it's pretty true to scale. Both their respective partners are closer to them in height (his boyfriend's 60cm and her girlfriend is 62cm).

Keep in mind that she is wearing heels and he is slumping a bit to look down at her, so they're cheating a little. You'd have to decide if it works for your characters.

    16. I personally have a pair, (no pics on this comp or anything) that have a 14cm difference. Yes my girl looks a little short compared to her partner, and unfortunately even with heels on my girl they can't look into each others eyes but there is supposed to be almost a foot difference between them (5'4 girl (58cm) vs 6'2 (72cm) boy) basically. I really like the height myself. She looks small and delicate compared to her rather beastly looking partner, just as their characters are meant to.

She doesn't look childlike either, just smaller than he does. I also have a difference of about 10cm between two of my boys and again I love the height and size difference. I enjoy height difference pairings, so I guess it was only natural it would transfer to my few doll pairings too. XD

But sometimes it does look good and sometimes not so much. As stated it really is a personal thing, while one pair may not look right together, you may actually still find that to you, you personally like the two you've chosen together.

    17. Judging by the pictures, 15 cm is a big difference.
Maybe give her a pair of extremely high heels! :XD:

    18. I have a pair with ~10cm height difference, and it looks really good, but IMO more important than the height difference is that the sculpts look right together. If one sculpt is super realistic and the other is super stylized, it's not gonna work out. So I would just make sure they look right together, and it'll work out okay. :)

    19. Thank you for this photo! It's exactly what I needed. I was talking with my friend and our characters are 5'5" and 5'11" we put both feet and inches of the dolls in a heigh calculator and Asa and Aoyue are to scale for their height. My boy just legitimately has a tiny wife.

    20. I had a Dollshe Bernard(70cm) and Soony/DD hybrid (60cm) at one time and the difference was a bit much when I looked at them on their own. When I put and msd sized doll next to them, it seemed to help the height difference. Soony didn't look like much of a child next to Bernard when and msd was near.
