Hooves, Why Do We Like Them?

Sep 16, 2009

    1. I like the hoofs. Hooves? The Soom MD doll's faces are not my cup of tea, but I love those hoofs. I just responded in an intuitive way to them. I think maybe they balance those long legs, visually.
I've also always liked horses a whole lot; I had tons of My Little Ponies as a kid, and my favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. Plus I knew people with sheep and goats and stuff. So maybe that's why.
Maybe the popularity of hoofs has something to do with that whole "big socks" trend in Japan? I don't know if it's still going on, but for a while I kept seeing manga art where all the girls had these little shoes and giant leg warmers, or their feet themselves were sort of hoof-shaped--in Junko Mizuno's art, for example. And lots of BJD fans are also anime/manga fans. Maybe there's a connection.

I've heard Resinsoul might start offering their Dan with hoofs. I'm hoping they'll sell them separately so I can retrofit my Dan.

    2. I just love fantasy... when I first got into BJDs years ago there wasn't much available... some elf ears here and there, a few vampire fangs. And I was right there buying the elf ears and vamp fanged dolls! My first BJD was an elf (and second and third).

Anyway, the hooves and other fantasy bits on dolls being released now are just WONDERFUL. I don't care if SOOM does ONLY hooves. I'm sure there will be enough designs created by various companies to make most people happy (and other just won't ever be happy no matter what; that's just life).

I loved Beryl--I'm an Aries, but wasn't sure about getting a large doll. When Sard came out with hooves, horns AND pointy ears--I just couldn't resist!!!

I've loved SOOMs whole MD line, really... I succumbed to a Euclase, too. I'm going to try and stop there, because I can't buy EVERYTHING (sadly). But I hope many more fantasy dolls and HOOVES are in the future.

Specifically, why hooves: Aries/hooved. Unicorn/hooved. Demons/hooved. Satyrs/hooved. Fauns/hooved. Capricorn and Taurus/hooved. I'm sure there are other things I like that are hooved, but you get the idea! I just love 'em.

    3. I grew up on mythology stories so I really do love how people add on hooves. I do think they are limiting; however, can't really think of too many things i could further clothed the dolls in.

I have yet to decide if I am going to mod my dollfie and i like reading threads like this just to see how other people think about it. It would be cute to have my own little faun but is it worth me paying sooo much more to buy a soom doll or to modify one of my own dollfie.

    4. I think hooves look super cool. I definately want a boy doll with hooves at some point. It may seem like there are a lot of dolls with hooves since it's the number one thing soom releases, but they're the only ones that have 'em. Also, many people love and want a doll with hooves but can't scrape the money together in the 2 weeks or so the doll is for sale.

    5. Hooves, horns, tails, wings, I like them all because they're impossible in reality. My dolls all reflect my secret but impossible wishes.

    6. I think part of the reason is that they are fascinating and magical to look at, you never see a real person walking around with horses hooves or stags hooves right?
From an aesthetic point of view, the extra joint in the Soom Digitigrade leg adds a real grace to the doll. Even though I have since sold my Heliot, there was something beautiful about the way he stood :aheartbea

For me I like to look at all the hooved dolls, but the only one I really wanted to own (and will soon:aheartbea) was Sard. He and Beryl were at the beginning of the hoof craze and are 'the originals' for me so to speak. My favourite animals are horses and deer, stags in particular, and I really love mythological creatures and fantasy so Sard really called out to me as a way of personifying that fascination :D

    7. Honestly, I don't know why I love the hooves~ (or paws, claws, etc. for that matter). Maybe it has something to do with my love for mythical creatures? I just hope I can get one soon.. I would kill for a Glot or Glati T^T

    8. I don't know why either...I have to say I'm not so taken with claws or paws....but yeah, I like the hooves....and horns....

    9. What an interesting read! I'm really uber newbie, but I love the hooved dolls and would love to have one myself someday. (Maybe after I win the lottery? lol :D) Anyways, what a neat topic. Thanks for the interesting read, folks.

    10. For me, as a fairly recent doll owner, hooves are still new and fascinating. Also, I have, ever since I was little, loved mythology, particularly Greek/Roman/Norse/Egyptian. Many characters from those myth cycles would include hooves, even without going beyond that into books and movies I like with hooved creatures (Mr. Tumnus, seriously adorable). So for me, I'm quite pleased that they exist, and I want some! Unfortunately, I don't want the dolls; I just want some hooves (I tend to prefer the 3-joint) that I could attach to my DZ 70cm boy, or my JID dolls. Hm... Also, Zinc the centaur is amazing; his proportions are vastly improved from other official centaur sculpts I've seen around (although they can be pretty, too!). Good grief, though, he'll probably be pricey!

    11. OMG, I love hooves. That's probablly because I really like saytrs so much. The are cool looking and diffrent from just human legs, I think they add more character just on their own.

I sadlly only have a handful of characters whou would need them, so when it comes to buying them, I will most like make a new character just to have them.

    12. See, I originally thought I'd never get a hooved BJD, but after being out of the hobby for 3 years....I come back and my tastes do a 180. I used to love the bigger boys but now I'm all about MSD girls.......but I think I want a hooved boy rather than a girl....

I don;t know why but I automaticly think "masculine" when I think about humanoids with hooves!

Also I'm like a few of you, love horses, grew up around animals with hooves, secretly belived in unicorns and totally wish it was real!
Maybe I just want to be a unicorn!

    13. I've always loved the hooved dolls. It's only recently I purchased one (A split for a DZ tiny deer boy).
I cant really explain why I like them, I've just always been a girl for fantasy but not full blown fantasy. I'm also adore deer so when I saw him I had to have him.

    14. I have a bunch of hooved dolls (just like fauns, satyrs, centaurs, anthros, etc.). Often a hoofed foot is pretty similar mechanically to a human foot, as far as how well it stands. Even with digitigrade legs, they can usually stand OK. Some, of course, are better than others!

    15. It makes sense that they'd be mechanically similar to the human footed dudes, but for some reason I never thought that. I am always amazed when I see photos of hooved dolls standing, especially on one leg o.o

    16. I loved hooved dolls, mainly due to the fantasy element and how the dolls look graceful and elegant. These are the types of characters I love to create and want to write about.

    17. I like hooves when they are large and draw the eye. Also they have to have the three piece legs. If the legs and hooves are thin then I feel like it doesn't add much to the doll. If I were to get a fantasy doll I would want the fantasy parts to be evident and the best part of the doll.
