Horns, antlers (aka male symbols) on woman dolls

May 22, 2012

    1. In fact, female reindeer hold their antlers through the winter, while male reindeer do not. So, Santa's reindeer? Always shown as being antlered? They're ALL GIRLS.

    2. I'm not a fan of horns or antlers. I don't see them as symbols of masculinity so much as just big hunks of bone protruding from a skull, which to me is just not attractive on a doll. I like them on animals just fine, particularly unicorns, fantasy-wise, but they look weird on a doll to me.

    3. You have killed me now!!
Seriously, our personal demons ideas are a rich source of inspiration, as I can see here. The term "demon" does not mean that they should be lawful evil character - I am sure about their original creative personalities. ;)

Thanks for the picture of a really mighty woman! :)

    4. Well, in abyss of DoA I've found this topic really attractive. Specially because it talks about our demon fascination and desire. Once I've made such an androgenic doll, which totally suits to this topic: with male character, female vulva and horns. Our dolls very often shows who we really are and giving female doll male attributes (and conversely) make this doll more characteristic and sexual in some way. Horns and antlers for many people may seems to be determinant of masculinity, but as some of you noticed in animal word and myths females also have them. In my opinion "horny" female dolls have some indefinite power that "horny" male dolls does not. "She" is then something between devil and God, teasing male nature, showing that "she" also have "horny thoughts" and desires something more than only attention.

Ok I seems talking like Freud (hope you don't mind it) but I really admire such dolls XD

    5. It really depends on the characters setting for me! For example the female Draenei from world of warcraft seem better suited for horns than their male counterparts. However, with dolls I see it as a gender neutral thing because you can put your dolls into any kind of fictional environment you please! But I really do have a thing for girls with horns if you wanted to know my preference!

    6. This might have been mentioned but..Quite a few female creature bear antlers/horns as well as the males...

    7. I hate anything that tries to rationalise or force something into gendered boxes based on what "nature" has to say about it, so you can probably guess my answer to your question right now, haha. If someone has a female character with "male" animalistic traits, all the more power to that person.

    8. Are horned or antlered woman dolls acceptable for you?
Dolls are canvases for our imaginations to go wild. While I do veer towards realistic for my own dolls, the nicest ones I see are unique and outside the box appearance wise.

Do you think that their woman-being is in conflict with these male attributes?
Nope. Not even a little bit.

Do you need some "explanation" why a woman has horns/antlers?
No. It's none of my business either way. To each their own.

    9. Very true and I'm surprised that I hadn't thought of it before, but I love antlers and have no qualms sticking them on female dolls. As a matter of fact, my dream doll is a DC Alberta and she has a weird moose thing going on.

    10. I never really thought of it in terms of phallic symbolism, but it doesn't really bother me, since the dolls are usually meant to be fantasy creatures in those cases, and what with the magic and all, gender-specific purposes often go by the wayside for aesthetics.

    11. Haha, I was actually thinking the same thing. xD I think the idea is cool, but it definitely made me think that Freud would have a field day with that. :P

    12. Ha ha well, lots of female animals in real life have horns as mentioned.

I think the issue is assigning genders. Take an antler or a horn, what says it is male more than female? Female more than male? Nothing. It doesn't have a gender and shouldn't be restricted to just one or the other. Just like real people or other inanimate objects the gender of someone or something is not determined by their biological sex or association with a gender.

    13. Are horned or antlered woman dolls acceptable for you? Do you think that their woman-being is in conflict with these male attributes? Do you need some "explanation" why a woman has horns/antlers?

Geesh. This are NOT male attributes for all species. AND these are FANTASY dolls. It's like saying, "But unicorns don't look like that!" They can look however anyone wants them to look because there are no unicorns in Real Life (unless you're thinking of rhinos or something like that!).

    14. I don't make that association at all... O_o

And fantasy creatures don't make all that much sense anyway... So I'm probably not gonna fuss over antlers on a doll...

And a lady can have all the "male attributes" she darn well feels like. It doesn't really matter!

    15. Unrelated, but I used to have a friend who actually believed unicorns are real, and she used to go on long rants about what "real unicorns" look like, as opposed to fictional ones. She was pretty crazy. Real ones, by the way, look like goats with tails like donkeys, they have beards and cloven hooves. According to her, anyway.

    16. I for one have never considered horns / antlers to be something 'male, masculine' or whatever. So I have no problem with horned female dolls.

    17. The Soom Marl (my grail doll) has a set of antlers, despite being female. I think they use them to hammer home the point of "THIS IS A DEER". It's never bothered me and the great thing about most dolls is that the horns or antlers are usually held on with magnates (Doll Chateau's Alberta, however, are sculpted on) so if they bother you, you could always just take them off.

    18. I love the ideas of horns/antlers, etc. Though horns are often phallic symbols, I find them ethereal and whimsical.

I hope to one day attend a masquerade ball and I certainly will be rocking the horns. \m/ lol

    19. Yeah... *sigh* I've heard that before from other people, so your friend isn't the only crazy person running about! People will also talk authoritatively about how dragons should look, etc., etc. *_*

    20. no way, girls with horns are awesome, in fact i prefer them on female dolls to male, if you like it you have no need to explain it...it just is
