1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. Four years ago, my first Anime convention there where girls holding them and In instantly fell inlove, instantly. I never thought I could afford one. I did research over the years including changing the type I wanted. (I went from a girl Luts to a boy Souldoll.) and finally lived my dream. (and plans for a second. XD)

    2. well, my story is kinda funny..

i bought a notebook that got a BJD pic as its cover
i was thinking "omg this doll is soo cute.. is that real?" xD
then i started to search trying to find out about this doll but i didnt find anything usefull
then i took my notebook and found "SD" written there so i tried to seach to dolls + DS keyword (i didnt know what does SD mean at that time) till i found out that these doll are called "Ball-jointed dolls" AKA BJDs
so i started to fell in love with these dolls and searched a lot.. trying to know more about them
then i found DoA which helped me a lot to know about these dolls xD

    3. I'm a member of DeviantArt, so I found out about the dolls by seeing a bunch of photos where they posed in ways and in lighting that made them look like humans! *0*
When I found out they were infact, dolls, I had to snoop around and study them! They were so beautiful and facinating!

I recentlly got my sister into the hobby, too. I had told her about them a few times and she told me I was crazy, but after I dragged her to a meet (for moral support, cuz im shy) she decited they were kinda cool and started to hunt them with me! :)

    4. Somehow I randomly ran across them on the internet after looking up Pullips/Taeyangs. I was immediately creeped out by them, and wondered why anybody would want one. Yet, I was slightly fascinated at the same time. I remember looking at one of the guy BJDs and thought he was kind of handsome. I just let it go, because I really didn't want one at all, besides, that was WAY too much money, I thought.

I ran across a dA page that had a Dollshe Saint that I fell in love with, so I had to check out this "Dollshe" company. I realized that they seemed even more expensive than the average BJD, being $650-$750 for a nude doll with no faceup or seam sanding. They didn't even include eyes. :( I continued admiring the pictures of Dollshes when I decided that I would save $650 to buy a Saint. I went onto their site to do a mock-order, when I realized that they were doing a sale for the "Pure Body" for only $325! I was so pumped I bought him without any doubt in my mind that I was in this hobby for good.

A sidenote: I was looking up my music professors's name to send her an email after I had purchased my Dollshe, and I saw that her Twitter username was "Dollfie Girl". What a coincidence! I feel like emailing her asking if she is into BJDs too... :)

    5. I got an old anime/manga magazine and saw those incredible good looking Unoas when I was 14. With 18 my dream came true without financial problems :D

    6. That depends... nah, by then I'll just claim them as my personal birthday present to myself.

    7. I have heard and seen pictures of the BJDs for a few years but was not drawn to them. They used to be very expensive, right?
I have been collecting mostly playdolls and display/character Barbie for a while. My 1st BJD purchase was two vinyl ones who were on 50% off sale and I still have them. Then the Christmas event from Doll Leaves really got me going. They are more affordable now too.

    8. As a result of serfing in the internet I, somehow, came to the site on which they was selling BJD. And than I saw HIM there. It was love at first site:aheartbea. I couldn`t sleep for 3 nights, trying not to think about buying it. It was like mantra " I don`t need it-I don`t need it..." But than I got scared that he may be sold out ( that time I didn`t now that mold is basic) and made an order. And so... now I`m on 6th week of waiting of my girst BJD;).

    9. Well i got into BJD's when I went over to my friends house and she brought them out...I went I wants one...I wants one and then two months later ...teeheee I got my first one and now have 11. ooopies...(grin)

    10. (giggles) : )))

    11. It was several (several) years ago. At first I really didn't know what to think of them. I was at Y-con with a friend when I saw my first BJD. A bunch of women had them on display on a table in the hotel lobby. I know I had read an article about them before that, but the details were kind of sketchy. Anyway, later I passed by a booth in the dealers room that was selling the dolls, and the more I looked at them, the more I wanted one, but I did not have the funds. I remember I took a business card home from the seller and looked them up online, but due to the cost I never really become serious about buying one until this year. I just actually placed the order about a week ago. I blame my friends. They spread the BJD fever in me again by buying BJDs of their own. :whee:

    12. I found out about them through cosplaying at conventions, but I became interested in them after seeing the doll photography on DeviantART. I googled BJD's, found Iplehouse's site, and I've been hooked ever since.

    13. My sister got me into it. Over the years she bought, and sold several dolls, in all kinds of sizes, and shapes. The first one that sparked my interest was a Soom Beyla. I though she was adorable. Then when she got a fairyland msd boy I fell in love with Fairyland, but the doll that finally made me buy one was a Pipos Basic demon cat that she sold to me. The rerst is history. Now I have a fairyland Bisou, a pipos baha, and pipos Ringo. Haha

    14. Photographs!
Hiritai's account on dA has a bunch of wonderful pictures and while I did not fall in love at first sight; the second time I got to see these dolls I couldn't say no > w<

That is about all for me! I'm good at researching things so I obviously went berserk for BJDs and couldn't stop looking them out XD

    15. I don't even remember entirely, it was probably around 6 years ago. I guess just because I was into the whole J-rock scene, and a lot of those people at the time were also interested in BJDs. Somehow I came across pictures of some, and looked into it more because I was interested, I suppose. :D

    16. I didn't give up Barbies until I was about 14 (only when I discovered the internet LOL), so I have always been very interested in "toys" (as it were) and dolls. As I poked around on the internet, I discovered Lolita style fashion. Many of them would also be fans of BJDs which is how I learned their name. Also, a lot of times if one searches for "lolita" on photo websites you will eventually find a BJD in that style of dress. When my friend heard I rather liked them, she introduced me to Pullips, but these full resin made babies are too hard to resist. ^^

    17. They've just kinda always... been there, I suppose. The first anime convention I went to (when I was twelve) there must have been some kind of BJD craze in my area or something, because almost every artists booth and even some dealer's tables had pretty dolls sitting behind them with big do not touch signs, and I guess I thought they where cool and wished I had one but didn't pay 'em much mind. Stuff like that is pretty normal for me so I didn't bother asking questions :sweat Since then they'd been in and out of my life in photographs and such, I remember going through a phase of learning more about them and really liking them, but I don't think I really learned much about them or took more than a fleeting interest in them xD mostly my impression of them at that time was "why would you want a doll with nipples?" :doh I'm not sure when I started looking up doll sites, but THAT'S when I really got into them and decided I wanted one.

    18. I saw them on tables at conventions and didnt even get into the hobby bc I knew how expensive they were. my fiance got one in the mail one day and my eyes lit up. I have played with barbies for so long and I always liked the ones with pose able arms but these! OMG they were so pose able and photogenic. so I got a small Barbi sized one at first and she was going to be my UTENA doll. Well, I couldnt stop looking at the MSDs on the net so I just had to get one (had dreams about them for F's sake >.< grrr) So I decided to get one ^^ then My fiance got one bc she didnt want me to be jealous of my doll lol so now I have a boy and a girl MSD and I do alot of sewing :D

    19. Well I first saw obitsus and was instantly unimpressed. They were soo not cool to me. But one day I started going through deviantart's many BJD photographers and I found that a spark of interest was slowly being ignited. so I started looking around and the spark hit kindling. I was one of the people lucky enough to find DoA when it had open registration. xD I wanted a doll after only about 3 months and put one on layaway lickety split. now I have 2 at home and 2 on layaway! =D couldn't be happier. Cx

    20. I don't remember that well now, since it's been a long time since I discovered them.. But I think I stumbled onto them online, then eventually found articles on them in a few doll magazines, and then joined DOA 6 years ago... Then I got my first girl with the money (my WHOLE paycheck...! T^T;;;) I made from the first job I got~~! Best way to spend your first dollar, so to speak.. Hehe~ The rest is history~~
