How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. I found them quite by accident. I have always loved dolls and was looking on E-bay for a ballerina doll I had as a child. This was a few years back. Ran into a site there called OOAK art dolls and fell in love with the OOAK clay dolls and began making them. I have been in the arts my entire life, so this was a new and fun avenue. Looking for Lambs wool for hair, I came upon a site that had a BJD on it, and I did not know what I was even looking at.....followed names, references and all the sudden here was this whole new world I did not even know exsisted. Found a site BJDcollectasy and to tell you all the truth....I was just blown away with the artistic side to all the fascinating little people. I dont know if I will ever get them out of my blood...not that I'm trying to :) ! I just hope my grandchildren love BJD's, because they are going to get quite a few!

    2. I saw a BJD for the first time on DeviantArt and asked the user what they were! He/she sent me a link to a site selling them which I glanced at briefly but understood nothing and wasn't that interested so I forgot about them! Honestly I don't know how I got into them a few years later but it was probably because of another DeviantArt artist! Either way I'm so happy I got my Migidoll Ryu! I was undecided on MSD molds but then I saw the beautiful Ryu SD and knew it had to be him (: I love those moments!

    3. I think I saw my very first bjd's at some animecon or another. Didn't think much of them at the time, just that their size was pretty unusual. Few year back one my online friends contracted the bjd fever and squee'd about it in msn for months before buying her first. She sent me some links about the molds and hair and eyes she was planning to get and I gave my polite opinions. :) I thought the dolls were pretty enough, but found the price terrifying. Since then I checked her bjd pics in FB from time to time until I randomly stumbled upon a bjd I couldn't resist myself (pukifee pongpong). xD Looking back now, getting my own doll was bound to happen at some point.

    4. My friend told me about them once, and then two years later, I decided to actually look at them. XD All I searched was 'super dollfie' on ebay, and I ended up finding so many that I wanted. I didn't get any of them, but I really wanted them. I got really into the hobby, and now know more about BJDs than my friend who told me abou them in the first place. But I still don't know much. lol And I still don't even have one.

    5. An online friend of mine has been collecting for a number of years and often blogs about it. I've always enjoyed looking at the pictures she's taken, but felt the dolls were financially out of reach. However, having backed down on some other hobbies I have (or had) has freed up funds that would allow me to get one or two dolls. So, yeah, a personal introduction, so to speak.

    6. I came to discover this hobby from a friend actually when we first met during a gathering, she brought along her doll and I was quite attracted to it for before that, my concept of BJD is creepy for the ones that my other friends showed me is usually very emotional looking type and you could say that my impression towards BJD is some creepy dolls...but turns out that my friend's doll is a cute one n_____6

    7. looking around on flickr. i own several blythe dolls, and many blythe owners seem to own bjds.

    8. I first came across BJD's about three years ago. A freind and I were looking at recent uploads on DA and came across this beautiful picture.
It was a picture of Hiritai's Esthy Peroth Logan, and I instantly fell in love with BJDs.

    9. One of my friends who is into antique porcelain dolls had stumbled onto them, and posted pics of her Luts Lishe. I checked them out and thought they were amazing, but the price was crazy! I set the idea aside for a few years.

One year for Christmas my husband made me an avatar of my World of Warcraft character, using an obitsu. I was interested in making more outfits for her, etc, and crept onto junkypot, and then the more browsing I did, the more I wanted dolls! It wasn't until I found inexpensive manufacturers (Angel of Dream, Bobobie, etc) that I considered actually getting one. And now here I am, sneaking in!

    10. I first saw BJDs on deviant art since im always looking at photography pictures but I didn't know anything about them. Then I went to a con and saw some people with BJDs. I still didn't know much about them so then when I started hanging out more with my one friend, she introduced me to them (and like 7 other people xD) And now im obsessed with them lol : D

    11. My story started at Anime Weekend Atlanta 2010. I don't remember the exact order of the events, but I think it started when I saw a girl carrying a doll around. I'll admit I gave her and doll a weird look (so sorry! TuT) but I guess after that I actually started to notice them. I found two booths where BJDs were and talked with the very nice ladies that ran them. They helped me understand what they were and one of them gave me her business card. From there I just keep on researching them and learning more (DoA helped a lot), I was quite taken with how beautiful the dolls were. It wasn't 3 months later that I got my first doll :). This September will mark one year that I've been dolly-hooked XD.

    12. When I was a kid, my Dad had a man who worked for him that was a very good friend. He bought me and my sister a pair of very gorgeous porcelain dolls. I think they unconsciously sparked my interest for dolls in the first place.

Last year I met my current best friend, and she introduced me to her boy Connor, and I fell in love! He's a bit of a jerk to me (He doesn't like to stay where I tell him. xD) but I'm currently saving for my own. @u@

    13. Hello all,

I have always loved tiny dolls and when I had my children (both girls) they just reminded me of little dolls - well when they were sleeping anyway! ...so I googled images of dolls and found Fairyland's website, well that was it for me. At the time I could not justify that much money - having two young children and all (they are only 15 months apart - yes I was that crazy!!) - so I bided my time and waited, and waited until I could wait no more.

Once my first doll arrived it was surprisingly easy to part with more money so that she was not lonely. I don't know if I will ever have enough BJDs, and I keep telling myself that "I have two girls, so someone will love them, when I no longer can".

    14. Wel I actually found a link on my friends Facebook with a BJD in it, then I went to Google and decided I absolutly had to buy a doll. Sorry.. Lame story

    15. I discovered bjds from a Canadian anime magazine (who's name escapes me at the moment XD) however I was looking through the magazine when I stumbled upon an article with a picture of a bjd. I read the article and immediately fell in love :D then the whirlwind of research began XD

    16. My introduction came in a 'round about way. I've always loved dolls (big Mattel fan for years) then about 8
years ago I discovered Tonner dolls. I met my boss' daughter and introduced her to the dollyworld.
After explaining to her about all the wonderful kinds of dolls out there she started researching BJD's.
She has absolutely surpassed me, she has 10 of them, I only have the Tonner BJD's. After her showing me all the different types I stumbled upon the anthro cats and I love them! Of course all the ones I want are sold out so I'm just going to save and wait. Just discovered Iplehouse Serca tonight and I adore her.

    17. Well...I buy keychains and other random merchandise of my one favorite character (from anything ever) and eventually, I came across figmas. (I think that's what they're called.) They're these really detailed PVC figures of anime characters but of course, it wasn't likely that there would be a figure of a male, shonen character, so I kept searching until I came upon Dollfie Dreams, which led me to Volks. And...you can guess where it went from there. xD I'm glad I didn't buy anything right away though, because over the past few years, I've liked the anime aesthetic less and less but since the character was important to me, I wanted to find a good doll that fits him and looks more realistic. And I think I finally found the one.

    18. It was destiny, really.
As a child, the only barbies I liked to play with were the ones that actually had bendable joints. They were just more fun that way. Then years went by and my playtime imagination died and my artistic mind grew.
The first time I had seen one was at my first anime convention. I had no idea what in the world it was and the guy holding her kinda intimidated me, so I never found out.. She was beautiful, though.. An MSD with long black hair wearing black and purple Gothic Lolita. I'll never forget how captivated I was by her...

A few years later I stayed the night at a friends and I notice something new sitting on her floor. It was just a box at first glance, but once I got permission to look into it, there was the most adorable doll laying inside it. It looked so delicate, like porcelain. I was afraid to pick her up, at first. Getting the OK, I started to play with her immediately. Without even knowing a thing about the hobby, I just had to snap millions of photos of her in all kinds of different poses. She told me it was a Honey Delf from LUTS that she got for Christmas. She wrote down the website for me and I investigated as soon as I got home. Looking at the prices, I knew I'd never get one.. So I put them out of mind for a couple more years. Remembering about it out of the blue, the extensive research began.. Turns out there were millions of companies with more reasonable prices XD

    19. I found BJDs through deviantArt. I saw a photo of a BJD featured on the front page as one most popular deviations, and they looked so real!! And that's when I decided to look into them more :)

    20. Saw my first one on Deviantart. It was a cute little Yo-SD staring out the window. >w<

Then an artist at my school had them, and drew them for her project, so after that I was hooked. =D
