How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. While collecting other types of dolls, some collector friends had photos of their collection. These photos were a mix of doll types, which was my frist introduction to BJD. I recall being very fascinated with their articulation. I've always been drawn more to dolls who can 'move'. My first IRL view was at a doll show and sale in Memphis.

    2. A friend of mine had some pictures of BJD's on her old Xanga account, and it got me curious, but I didn't know what they were called, and for whatever reason, I didn't ask.
About a year later, I saw them again on dA more regularly, and then I finally saw one in person at an anime convention. There was a girl selling....something, and she had a very handsome SD-13 on display in the midst of a souvenir confection.
After that, I did a little research here and there, and basically stalked a few people on dA that photographed alot of their bjd's. After a couple years, when I finally stopped being terrified of the prices and had a high paying job, I bought Hong with my first paycheck. ^___^

    3. A co-worker brought one to work one time and I swore she was weird. However the thing kept calling to me from across the cubicle. Then she let me pick him up and there went the neighbourhood. He was so heavy and substantial in my hands it was like I could feel his quality. It took me quite a few years after my first brush to get into the collecting of BJDs.

I began my journey with Barbie and various movie based action figures. From that I graduatied to larger fashion dolls like Tonner, CED, and other 16 ti 19 inch dolls. Finally I was ready to get into dolls that offered me total control and customization options. I have never looked back. i love all my BJDs some get played with more than others. They get new outfits everytime the seasons change. I could not imagine life without my little army of BJDs.

    4. I've always been into dolls from a young age; i mean i threw away my dolls at the age of 13:sweat but then a few years down the line; about when i was 17 or something, i was on DevArt and saw someone's BJD, i remember it was volks doll because i remember telling my dad about it.
So yeah it started from there^^-i had to wait a year or so later and i got my first ever BJD.

    5. When I was a kid, I always wanted dolls that could bend more realistically, I wanted a doll that could sit and look comfortable instead of rigid and stiff like my Barbies (I still have a whole bunch of them XD). About 5 years ago I somehow stumbled upon the Luts website and was fascinated by them. I wanted one so badly it hurt. I tried convincing my parents, but all in all it seemed like an unreachable goal. I also couldn't really figure out how to get into the hobby because the only doll pictures I could find were on the actual websites, so I didn't know how big they were in real life or what they looked like outside of those company photos. Eventually after looking around more I found a whole bunch of other doll websites, but my hope of ever actually getting a BJD seemed pretty hopeless until the end of last year when I was able to save up enough over Christmas to get one. I also joined a group in my area that hosts BJD meets once a month so I was able to see them in real life which was really exciting. I ended up getting my first doll in March, and I love her :3

    6. I was at Otakon and a friend of a friend had a BJD. I was really intrigued by how beautiful she was, and just fell in love when I held her. I was so ready to go buy one....until I found out it cost as much as a computer XD After that I researched and saved (then kept trying to convince myself I didn't really need one) until I got my first doll!

    7. This is gonna be quite a story for me.
It all started for about 5 years ago. I think I was searching for anime pictures on the web when I stumbled upon a special EL picture from Luts. I had no idea what it was, but it sure was pretty. Some time later the same thing happened again and again and I started to wonder what the heck that was. So I managed to find Luts site and started to browse around. When I had a better knowledge of what it was, I found DoA and other communities pretty fast. I got my first doll about 2 years after I found the hobby. And here I am now, wit 10 little ones. :sweat

    8. Have seen yoko long ago and fell in love at first sight with her! :=)

    9. Originally I was just trying to get into Japanese stuff. Anime and manga were all the rage. I liked a little of each but was exploring other things, too, like music, visual kei, and BJDs. It ended up though that none of the four dolls I've ordered are Japanese. In fact I think they're mostly Korean! And one Chinese.

    10. In my case, it was a few months before I joined DoA, I had just gotten on SheezyArt, and I was messing around the front page, and there was three people sitting on an oddly large bench, and upon closer inspection it turned out to be dolls. I fell in love then and there. Much Googling was done, I must say. And then I stumbled upon this place, and I'm quite happy that I did.

    11. awesome pictures on deviant art.

    12. That's very sweet that you're purchasing twins with your friends! I hope you both enjoy your dolls and the four of you stay close always.

I first saw a Super Dollfie in a magazine years and years ago while I was flipping through it at the doctor's office. I thought it was awesome, and looked them up later. There was no way I could afford one, but they never left my mind. For ages I would look at them and pine, but it wasn't until a couple years ago that I was actually able to get my first. I probably never would have, if it weren't for the fact that my wife was also interested in them, so we were able to encourage each other. We ended up searching for dolls to fit our favorite characters from a story of ours, and ordered the pair together.

    13. wellll, I'm an otaku and I was totally in love with rozen maiden, a peach pit's manga that deals with bjds. when I found it out I searched what they were and I fell in love with volks SD kira, but she was tooo expensive, so I looked for another doll and I found my kid delf Darae, Sayuki! now she's my beloved girl and I'm very happy with her!!! ^^

    14. I was searching for a website where I could read Togainu no chi online and I stumbled across a website where this person was cosplaying their BJDs as the characters and it was like love at first sight x3

    15. I was looking up actually clothes. Saw the coolest outfit on this neat male model.... clicked the picture.

Imagen my face when I realized the hot guy wasn't a person. And then when I realized that he was, in face, a doll. I was fascinated. xD

    16. I first started collecting blythe dolls about 5 years ago. I toyed with the idea of purchasing a BJD about 3 years ago but was hesitant because of the price. Then I started to notice the BJD community getting larger and larger on flickr and so I decided to give it a try and purchased my first BJD doll about a month ago and now I'm hooked!

    17. My friend got me addicted- Plus they are soooo pretty.

    18. uhm I don't remember exactly when I discovered them but it was about 2 years ago, maybe a little more.. I saw them in different webpages and I just fell in love :aheartbea

    19. My daughter got interested years ago. I always loved dolls...but thought these were a bit odd. Once she got her first mini one recently...I fell in love with her. Now, I am looking forward to getting my first BJD!! Thought it was a bit silly for a 57 year old...but found there are more people my age interested than I thought!!
