1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. I first saw them theough a Swedish site called "dayviews" (it's like a photo-diary website) where someone had bought one and posted pics if it. I was interested, som i Googled it and just.. Wow. Fell in love right there.
However there were several months before I fount my right doll and ordered it.

    2. My friend has been into BJDs about... 2 years. So far, I've only been functioning as an advisor for her, in terms of clothes design and stuff. It was interesting, during that time, and I grew to like her dolls - one of which... is a very irrepressibly-happy cupid3 puki... which tempted me into getting a BJD of my own.

    3. I discovered BJDs a couple years ago while online looking for supplies for my porcelain dolls I make. I fell in love with them immediately! The realness of them is what I like. I recently purchased my very first Ball Jointed Doll which is Layla by Kaye Wiggs. I am still not sure what BJD I want. There are literally thousands to choose from with so many different options it makes my head spin! I have a list of dolls I want but can only get 1 right now so am taking my time choosing. Being a "Newb", I also want to make sure the doll I get is very good quality because until I learn more about them, I am still not comfortable with the thought of having to string or re-string a new doll.

    4. from Deviantart lol...

    5. My daughter talked me into getting interested. I am glad she did. Just wish I had my first doll here already.

    6. I actually got into it because a friend of mine got an Iple doll. I fell in love with it. I also saw them at conventions and was very curious about them. ^^

    7. I saw the beautiful photos of the faces on the internet.
They were so natural! I wanted to know better what is it.

    8. I came across bjd's when Bratz dolls went away for a while, and in that time I started looking for a new type of doll to collect because I felt lost without dolls :P so I came across Pullip dolls and along those lines of researching them I found bjd's and I have to say, I am never turning back to Bratz or Pullips, bjd's are the best!

    9. I would often see pictures of them on DeviantArt but it took me a few years to find out what they were even called, then a couple more years to find out where to buy one (I'm not very good at internet searches lol). Thats when I fell in love with Elfdoll's Hazy ... and wound up buying her and Eun-A together

    10. Well, In my case I found out about the hobby through Flickr. I have a flickr page were I take pictures of one of my dolls not a BJD and some day looking to other people pictures I saw the most beautiful doll I have never saw in my life. At first I thought he was a fashion royalty doll of some sort. Then I look the title and say JID Iplehouse Jerome and I start looking for more pictures of him. Then I went to the Iplehouse site and start looking at all the gorgeous dolls there. At that time I thought Iplehouse was the only company that created those kind of dolls. I didn't know those gorgeous dolls were called BJD. So silly me I started saving to buy myself a Iplehouse Jerome. He was still the most gorgeous doll in my mind. But then some day I found a video of a Iplhehouse box opening in YouTube and the girl on the video mention the term BJD. So I googled it and found out I was far from the truth and there where a lot of companies that made BJDs in different forms and sizes. I was so amaze by the beauty of all of them. So I started doing more research and I'm still keep researching every day. About two months ago I found out the doll I felt in love with. She is a ChenXing from Loongsoul and I really want her to be my first BJD. So The money I was saving to buy a Jerome become the money to buy ChenXing :)

    11. I like your discovery story MrFjmg2003! It's great~ Did you know Iplehouse started their company as a clothing and doll furniture shop? They didn't start making dolls until they had been around for a few years. I'd guess that there were only about 20 BJD making companies around by the time they started making dolls.

I'm an old-timer myself. I started looking at BJDs in 2000 shortly after Volks made the first ABJDs. I was already collecting the Off Topic 1/6 Dollfies so I bought a Volks Dolpa book featuring them, Super Dollfies were shown on some advertisement pages at the back of the book. Love at first sight, though I didn't buy my first ABJD until 2005.

    12. I was introduced to the hobby a while back, when my cousins fell in love with the pretty dolls. I wasn't interested in them, until my cousin was showing me Soom's Migma. I decided I wanted her, and now I've just bought my second doll and already have plans for more.

    13. I was helping out at my boyfriends anime club and a lady name Ryuichi came in with her two dolls and they were so beautiful :fangirl: i had seen them before when i was younger but, my parents kind of pushed it a side but after seeing them face to face in real life and not just pictures i knew i had to have one of my own ^^ So now here I am waiting for little Shetani to finally come home. :|

    14. Oddly enough, unlike most of these stories (so it seems) my love was not at first sight.
I was around 14 when I first saw people with them at Anime Weekend Atlanta, and I was so confused about these people cuddling up to dolls and treating them like children! I thought they were creepy and just couldn't understand spending so much on them.

Over the years, they slowly started growing on me more and more every time I saw them. I still didn't want one though...

Well, this passed AWA, I saw some Impldoll babies and instantly fell in love! But I just couldn't handle the price and just said "no, I don't need to get anything like these ever!" The next day, a new friend let me hold a doll...for the first time....and I was instantly hooked!
The next week she emailed me everything I needed to know and invited me to DoA.

Now, I'm among the extremely excited as I wait for my first doll!

    15. I didn't know that. They really change through the years. They don't sell any more doll furniture right?? I only have seen their clothes and dolls but no more furniture. So far they are the only company i have seen with BJDs that looks more realistic.

WOW how do you resisted buying your 1st BJD for that long?? I have to wait like 3 more months to order my 1st one and I feel so anxious. I wish the time would go faster. Well only for this occasion

    16. I blame my friend J. We were playing Unknown Armies when she came in with this long bag and set it carefully down on the desk in my living room. Anyway we played through the story and sat down and talked about who would be doing the next one and waiting for parents to pick them up. When sometime in the middle of all of this J gets her bag and sits it in her lap and as she opens it I see a doll with red hair. To me (because at the time I was obsessing over it) he looked like Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho. I started flipping out and Spitting questions out at her. and that was how it all started. This happened a few years ago in freshman/sophomore year of high school.

    17. I was at a convention and a friend of mine brought her doll (back when she only had ONE... lol) and I was fascinated. This was a year ago. I went to a couple local meets and I liked them, but I didn't want one necessarily. Then, a few months ago, another friend of mine bought a doll- a B&G Elf Nailo- and it wasn't what she expected. She was really disappointed and was going to put him up for sale. But the second I laid eyes on him, I knew that I had to have him. So I bought him. And that's the story of how I bought my first doll! Lol

    18. Uh... I don't remember in detail how it happened, but 5-6 years ago a friend of mine linked me to eluts to show me something and I was like O.o
At first I thought like 'woha, those look incredible realistic' (she had superdolfies or smething on) and I loved the outfits so much, I saved pics into a folder on my desktop.
Only after that did I spot the prices and was like -.- Wt... Who the heck would spend so much money on a D O L L?!

It was a lot for me and in my family money was as good as always a bit tight.
I liked to look at them anyway, but already there was a rift between them and me, cause I distanced myself thinking I'd never be able to afford one of those ...

They were off my mind for years after that only popping up again 2-3 year ago. I was in the 'OMG T^T I want one... but... so expensive...' mood then and looked for pages that actually gave instructions on how to make it.
Never got around trying it in the end.

Now I got a halfway secure job, regular income and while I'm saving up to buy more furniture for myself and finish the upper floor of the house my parents and I built, I've decided that now I'll spoil myself and go get one for myself after coming accross them AGAIN on a convention.
I had a concept in mind on what exactly I wanted already. But while searching for that, I came accross two more dolls and now...
I'm waiting for the doll I had in mind from the start to come home, along with my originally planned 'number 3', who happened to be on sale the other day...
And in planning stages for the fourth one ^^° (Number 2 will be ordered next month ^^°)

    19. When I was younger I saw them and the creeped me out. Then I saw a beautiful photoshoot with an Iplehouse boy. It was love at first sight. Now I have one and two on the way.

    20. Ebay! I wa looking for Dollfie, or something, and found BJD! At first I saw the prices and thought I'd never afford one. But I started aving for DragonCon...then 7 months after saving, realized I had enough, and bought my first, a Delf El. (I wanted a DES, but the one I wanted was LONG sold, and that Korean artist paints gothic now, but back then, 2004, she painted more normal, so the DES was just...wow...)
