How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. I found Dollfie Dreams b/c I really liked Gurren Lagann. When I realized there was this huge Yoko doll/figure thing I was like "yep, I need that". Till I saw the price on Yoko lol. So I decided to just make a custom girl myself. Volks is having a body shortage right now so Power Girl currently only has a head. Browsing ebay for Dollfie things, I came across a AOD Meng Li with this awesome Alice in Wonderland face-up. And well in a month or so I'll have myself my first bjd.

    2. I first discovered bjds when i attented a book release at midnight in borders,my neice had odered a harry potter book. We were wating for the cashier to start calling everyone by the the color of the bracelets they were givin, while we waited i wondered off and saw a girl putting a stand ontop of one othe the manga bookshelfs,i remember thingking" is that a drink hilder??" Lol. She then started unwrapping her sweater and bam!! There it was,my first look at a bjd. Her bjd was about a 50-60cm because i remember saying" is that a new type of porceline doll?" Until she made her pose, her bjd was Hermione, she had the whole griffondore school outfit was pretty cool! Everyone started stairing once she was up,a guy dressed as itachi from naurto said" your wizardry wont work on me!" He then procceeded on doing some hand gestures at the bjd lol the owner gave her bjd her wand hehee, then i left, got home and didnt find out exactly what she was until 3-5 days later after searching. Really glad i saw what i saw :)

    3. I looked at them as well when I was younger and forgot about them. But then, some years later,my friend started talking about bjds. She showed me a picture of her favorite doll DollZone megi. This ignited my passion. Then I started to look more into all the other kinds of dolls and really couldn't stand just looking at pictures.I really like bjd,I have three bjds at the moment.

    4. I also found out about them on DeviantArt. I would constantly see them on the front page of the site and I was curious what they were. I thought they were real people until I read the comments and found out they were dolls. After that I started searching online abut these dolls and I fell in love with the way they were designed and how beautiful their faces looked. I still don't own one but I would love to in the future.

    5. I first found out about dolls about 8 years ago because of a famous cosplayer. I got curious and decided to do more research on them, and found a world of beautiful resin people. :aheartbea At first I thought I would never get one of my own ("impractical" since I come from a third-world country, and I was a high school freshman with no means of making money), but when I entered college, I met someone from the local BJD community who actually trusted me and let me babysit her darling little BJD for a while!

Ever since then, I felt that adopting a BJD was within my reach. I knew it would take plenty of work (saving up bits of my allowance, working on commissions, taking on photography assignments), but I badly wanted one. Now I have my very first girl, and 3 more dolls (and 2 floating heads!) on the way. :aheartbea

    6. My hobby was Pullip/Taeyang photographic 1 year. Then i think lets have little challenge and buy 1 bjd because photos. Now i have 2 heads and 1 body and coming 1 whole doll and 1 head :D. Lets have 1 bjd, haha. I think bjd`s magick is that you can made goth doll if you want and that is unique :).

    7. I first saw a Bjd doll in an italian doll collector magazine: there was a picture of Volks Lucas and a really fell in love with him (he seemed so different from all the dolls I knew, so realistic!), so I began to search for other information about this kind of dolls. I have never owned a Lucas, even though I still appreciate his face mold.

    8. I was at an anime convention in about 2005 or so. A girl there had a dollfie (not a dream, just a regular). I thought it was the coolest thing ever, but when I asked her about it she was kinda abrupt. I think she may have thought I was going to steal it or something. Either way, I was shooed off still not knowing what the heck it was other than a "dollie" (totally misheard what she said).

In 2010 I was looking up lolita costumes when I stumbled across a lolita who had taken a picture with her "super dollfie" (I believe it was a volks limited something or other). I immediately googled that and found a "what are Asian ball joint dolls" explanation on one of the "how to" websites. I took a head dive into the hobby and have been drowning ever since.

    9. Uhm, my friend started talking about the hobby around 2008, I guess, then she got her first doll, and I still hadn't quite understood what the big deal was... Being absolutely terrified of dolls it took me another year or so to accept that maybe it was okay that she was doing this to me (trying to cure my phobia, which of course wasn't the point with her getting the dolls, but she took the opportunity), and then it wasn't until last year that I'd say I discovered it, when I finally started looking at dolls of my own accord and think "hm, that one's kinda pretty, actually. Maybe..." ;) So it was a long and slow journey, but there it is, and now I'm stuck :)

    10. I probably first saw them on a anime forum years ago. I found some of them very pretty but too expensive, so I passed over actually getting one until I got an actual job. Between discovery and getting one, I did do some casual looking-up about them and stuff.

    11. I'd seen them before online, but hadn't paid much attention to them. It wasn't until a few months ago while attending a gaming convention that I met a lady who'd brought her doll along with her. When I saw her posing the doll and realized they were able to stand up by themselves, hold things in their hand, etc.....all while looking surprisingly human, I was impressed to say the least. I asked her about the doll and she was MORE than happy to launch into a "BJD tell all" lol; it was quite amusing to see the excitement in her face. After spending a couple of hours with her I knew I had to had one. Her doll in particular was very pretty (ResinSoul), but he was more fantasy character looking than I would normally be attracted to. She told me that the possibilities were pretty much endless in terms of the looks/characters between the different doll manufacturers, so not to worry. She wrote down the names of a bunch of websites and stuff for me to research when I got back home, which I did, and finally I found the perfect doll for me.....now it's just about waiting to get him home.

    12. I want to get a BJD for helping with photographing , bought Jessica rabbit tonner doll but it doesnt pose very well so on here to try and get a better one , esp as live in the UK its very hard, well i am finding it

    13. I found out about the bjd hobby after I started collecting Blythe. I would look at photos on Flickr of other people's Blythe dolls and then wander into their photo streams and started to notice the bjd's.

    14. Hmm, a few years ago when I had entered the cosplay scene, I'd see people carrying around these really pretty dolls or they had them set up at their booths. I asked one of my friends what they were because they were so pretty and I wanted one. Well after a very very long time of searching I came across Iplehouse. I pretty much fell in love with their Tatiana doll the moment I layed my eyes on her but I gave the rest of the site a shot and looked at other dolls but none of them held me like she did.

I'm happy to say that if all goes well (and I honestly can't think of a reason why it wouldn't, but things do happen) I will be getting my baby within the next few months!

    15. About 3 years ago I was browsing in YouTube and checking out this japanese robot and you know how it goes, next thing Im looking at a barbie like doll that has silicone breasts. One thing lead to another In the Volks site and at first didn't care for their joints. But I couldn't peel away and in less than a week, I was hooked! I just Ordered my first BJD from Iplehouse; JID Leona. Im so excited!

    16. i found out about these dolls around 2003, but at that time i had just had my little girl and money was very tight, there was no way i could have afford one, one day not too long ago this very same year i remember being very bored and started to browse e-bay. i came across the BJDs again and finally decided that it was a good time to get one. i didn't know which model to get, so i thought i'd start by looking for a doll that resembled my beloved character giselle. i looked through a lot of websites, the few i knew until then lol until i came across the michelle-A from LoongSoul. she was perfect to fill up the role, after 3 long months of wait she came finally home in june <3

    17. From the Japanese cartoon.. RozenMaiden...

    18. In 2007 I attended an Anime convention, which had a Junkyspot booth. I thought they were gorgeous, but scoffed at the price tags (I was a very broke 21 year old at the time, haha).
A few months ago, my interest was peaked again when I was reading an article on Japanese lolita fashion, which mentioned BJDs.
It was pretty much after that, that I became fascinated with them all over again. c:

    19. About 5 years ago (2007) at DragonCon. I was wandering around the Tolkien area at the Marriott on Monday, being sad & looking for a last panel, when I saw a group of cosplayers (in Shinigami outfits) w/these long cases. I sat down a little away from them & watched as they took these INCREDIBLE dolls out & posed them, etc. I was impressed.
I did run across a booth selling shoes, wigs, hats for BJDs later that day (my last trip to the dealer's room so a bit rushed) & saw the prices - for just the shoes - & decided NOT to research the dolls just yet.
But last year, my whole financial situation changed & I started looking for the dollies - went for Bleach cosplay (they WERE dressed that way!!!) & found some pics which led to Deviant Art & to Volks, Soom & Iplehouse....I saw Bichun & that as they say sealed that....

    20. I was looking around google and saw a lot of people with pullips, which eventually led to bjds.
