1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. I fell in love with a friend’s collection of custom Volks’ Neo Eb-Go (male-dolls).
I wanted some of my own and was directed to Volks’ web-shop. As always,
IE failed me; it didn’t redirect me to the English site, so not being able to read
Japanese I ended up thinking that Shirou Tachibana was an overpriced 1:6 Dollfie.
Of course later that day I was pointed to the right dolls and in the process discovered
that Mr. Tachibana was a LE Volks’ Super Dollfie and was from then on captivated
by the BJD hobby, all by accident. (:

    2. I was messing around on Etsy and saw an Alice Cherry Blossom modeling a dress that was for sale. I showed everyone, I was like, what is THAT and it's so CUTE!!! It took me 3 years to find one for sale, and once I got her, I started to hang out HERE, and once I started hanging out HERE, well I saw all kinds of fun things!

    3. Thank you everyone for sharing these stories : D It's a lot of fun to read them all!

    4. I first saw an article in Haute Doll magazine for a pair of their special editions. While I was a doll collector, they did not appeal enough to get me past their prices.
Then I trotted off to a re-enactor event and there were two people who had dolls. (both Volks) I was gobsmacked! Had never heard of DOA, but I did haunt ebay. Noting company names, I started researching sites, and on a Memorial Day 7 years ago, my first BJD was delivered by the postal carrier. Katja is now one of 7, but she is still one of my favorites. (Katja is a CP Lishe from Luts)

    5. I remember seeing a beautiful picture on Deviantart, and clicked on the user's page. There, they had a link to their FAQ and explained what a ball jointed doll was. At that moment, I kind of fell in love with BJDs. However, it came in "phases," seeing as I was going through such things XD However, I am sincerely interested with BJDs now, and am currently saving up for my first doll.

    6. I have a friend that has a doll, and when i saw it I knew I had to have one. And then I start stalking around DA, and some of the sites for dolls, especially Luts. I still want a luts doll more than anything else. I love all of their sculpts.

    7. I was stalking their site today, looking at the sculpts : )) They really are amazing.

    8. my favorite artist on deviantart started posting pictures of these gorgeous dolls and i fell madly in love and decided i hd to have one!

    9. By complete chance really.

I saw someones BJDs in their livejournal profile (I have later discovered after seeing their dolls on DoA that it was timchener) and was so intrigued so I snooped around a lttle bit and discovered LUTs (of course) and then found DoA.

And the rest is history xD

    10. I was a senior in high school, and I just happened to see photos of them on Deviant Art. The user had a FAQ regarding them on her page, so I looked it up. I found Luts after that and spent weeks just admiring them. After looking at more galleries of BJD collectors, I finally decided to join DoA and begin saving for my first doll.
Sadly, I had to use my savings for more important things (college is a cruel thing sometimes), so I'm resaving for my boy. Hopefully this time, nothing will come up and I can finally order him.

    11. Wow I'd love to see that photo!
And haha, seems like DA is also a major source of BJD first encounters ^^

    12. VulpesPraedatum ... she started it all. xD

    13. Well, like someone of you,I fell in love with BJD world because I see some of a frind´s collection,so I asked her about them and started to read a lot from this world in a spanish forum...and some months later,I bought my first doll :)

    14. In my case... It was all thanks to Flickr! ^___^

    15. Being inspired by a friend sounds wonderful : )

    16. My cousin, Rosslyn, got me interested in these wonderful dolls a couple of years ago. She brought one to a family party and she told me all about them. A few months later I had my first doll, a Soom Super Gem girl. At the time I told myself I was only going to get the one, but now I have 13 soon to be 14. They have turned out to be quite therapeutic for me.

    17. I found out about them through a movie I saw one of the main characters had one and on the lolita wikipedia page there is a picture of a girl holding one.

    18. I had been searching online for something to help me with a project I had in college and stumbled onto a blog called Fully Articulated, which is narrated by a bjd. I was instantly drawn in, read the entire blog, and thats when I discovered Mistula and all their wonderful music and also when I thought to myself that I had to have dolls like these too because they were just breathtaking to look at.
That would have been 5 years ago now.
Two years ago after much saving up and company trolling I bought my first boy, and soon after my demon twins followed and I'm currently waiting for my 4th to arrive ^_^

    19. Like seven years ago.. I came across Volks online. My reason for not getting into them then was, while I thought they were a neat concept, I didn't find Volks aesthetically pleasing and far too expensive for my teenage self. I pretty much put them out of my mind entirely until four years ago. I started looking at them on DeviantART and image searches again because I was impressed by the variety of companies there was. I tried to learn more about them and kind of wanted to get one until I read someone's blog on FAQs. They were just, frankly, rude and downright mean about all of their answers... They essentially said 'if you have to ask, you can't afford it' when in fact I could and I had looked around a little bit at ones I liked, but I was so irritated by the behavior of that girl and several others that I had came across that I decided not to get any for another three years. At that time I still wanted a doll and I decided I would get one regardless of rude people, joined here and discovered not everyone was nasty as that girl, though some are seeing as she's on here too, but she's much nicer on here. The reason it was such a big issue for me is I wanted to be able to participate in some sort of online community to share with other people that liked dolls, I didn't feel I could do that if everyone was going to be disrespectful. Anyway, overall I found people to be very nice and I got my doll when after months of searching I found the perfect one... and now I have several more.

I'm so happy I joined the hobby. It's a real shame that I put it off for so long because I was given the impression that a lot of the people in it were nasty, when, in fact, there is a lot of good people that just want to enjoy dolls with you. I wish I had found this place back four years ago when I first grew really interested in getting a doll.

    20. I'm really happy that after a lot of bad experiences you still came back to it : ))))
