How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. I found out about BJDs through the typical story of collecting Pullips then seeing BJDs on Flickr. I still remember the first picture I ever saw of one. :)

    2. I saw Limhwa Mono and fell in love and discovered BJD!

I hope to get my first dolls soon but they are costly!

Now I am confused over soo many beautiful dolls on DOA but now my heart is loving Iplehouse dolls because they look like real
      persons!

But I still like mermaid dolls and in pink color!

    3. I found bjds by accident. I was scouting around on the net looking for different sewing patterns for American Girl dolls. I found a site (MHD Designs) and saw she had all these lovely dolls modeling her patterns. I didn't even know dolls could be so beautiful & lifelike! My only exposure to dolls was Barbie, Cabbage Patch dolls and just a few years ago through my Heirloom Guild, American Girl. I was immediately hooked. So now I have 2 dolls on order and am itching to sew for them. I also have a long list of dolls I'd like to purchase in the future.

      Pretty funny, eh?

    4. Mostly through dA. After that I did some research on it. But that was years ago. I just started getting into the hobby now, with the push of seeing my friend's bjds in real life.

    5. First time I saw a BJD was at Japan Expo in Paris, in 2006, but I had no interest at that time. Then, in 2011, while browsing DA and looking for model to practice drawing, I found BJDs, and this time, I felt interested. 3 months later, I bought my first BJD, an Eva Iplehouse (now sold), than a Luna Tamer Iplehouse (Sold too). I have now a little Yu from Resinsoul and a Scratch the Cat from The Mushroom Peddler :) And I'm saving money to buy 4 JID Iplehouse :)

    6. I discovered BJD's at aftercare at my school when I was 7! xD My favorite school councilor who always brought be anime, manga, and japanese movies brought her doll to aftercare. He was just gorgeous and amazing! I wanted one but obviously at that age I couldn't have on! TTATT But it was ok because I got to help her and play with her doll and carry him around!~ She only let me take care of him and I got attached! I moved away and didn't think about him again for several years! But then I remembered and I looked and looked for years! Until finally this year I got my first doll! >w< super excited and I can't wait for her arrival!~

    7. I got interested by the BJD world in 2008, because one of my fashion school mate had an MSD size boy that she was always bringing with her in our classes. I've always been fond of dolls and had always looked for articulated ones that were not in porcelain that I could customize and take pictures of. Totally fell in love with her BJD and asked her more information about them. :) Took me a long time before having the money to get one that I really liked but finally I was able to get my first two about a month ago.

    8. I first saw one of Marina Bychkova's bjd's on Pinterest last year, and that photo resulted in a huge bjd search- now I have a Soom Rosette Camellia on lay-a-way and I can't wait to have her! I'm hoping she'll be here by Spring.

    9. Well here it goes. Lol. So back when I was in middle school; around seventh grade (back in '09). I was looking up off-topic dolls and suddenly I see a BJD. (back then I didn't know what it was). so i clicked on the image and it took me to the LUTS website. And ever since then I've fell in love with BJDs and I'm saving up for one; the one that I first saw that lead me to this hobby; a LUTS Senior Delf Frey. As soon as I saw the BJDs I instantly thought that I needed to have one! haha. Well, that's basically how I found out about these fine dollies. ^^

    10. Well my story is a bit of a two part-er. I first came across BJD's when I was a freshmen in high school. It was first period (computer graphics) in September 2003. We were starting work and the teacher told us that for our first project we could only use images that we could find on google, to create our own image. And I've always had a thing for eyes :P So I searched for something eye related. One of the first pictures to pop up was this AMAZING image of this doll with these breathtaking eyes. I was in love... with a doll lol. I ended up clicking on the link and looking threw this girls page with images of all of her dolls for the rest of class that day. I went home and told my mom about what I had been able to find out on the site. And then my mom and I went into research mode (my mom is always so supportive of the stupidest of things lol). From what we found out they were called dollfies. So we went full on into looking for those. A little ways down the line, for my sixteenth birthday, my mom got me two dollfies. One boy and one girl. I said thanks and smiled... but I couldn't have been more disappointed with them :( I was picturing these large beautiful resin things with changeable features and string jointing. And I ended up with two plastic barbie sized dolls with screws holding them together and the boy didn't even have holes where you could put eyes in :...( Yep, I was sure the internet had fooled me.

I gave up on the things of wonder I had in my mind for a good while. Then I found an old copy of the very art project that had started the love years before. As I looked at the eyes I had used in my image, I had a strong desire to take another look. I ended up on what had become one of my favorite sites (wiki) and couldn't believe the mix up my mom and I had made. I ended up looking around more online and found that they were even more money then I had first thought. So I save for about a year and then I ordered my first one... and then a second one a week later when I saw I had enough left over for a tiny little 3 inch fox BJD I had seen. He was on sale for only 60$ So how could I say no, right? They both got here. And I was so afraid of opening them. The first to get here sat for a whole 2 hours before I talked myself into opening it. I was so worried about being disappointed all over again. Especially after how much I paid for him. But I did open it... And so glad I did. I was in love all over again. These were the things of beauty I had dreamed of back in high school. I currently have 6 BJD's (not counting the 2 dollfie I still have) and I'm saving for more :)

    11. I first saw BJDs on a My Little Pony forum. I was certain that I wanted a Pullip for a while, then people posted pictures of their BJDs and I fell in love.

    12. I first saw BJDs on Deviantart. In fact, my first doll's head was purchased second hand from a nice person there.

    13. I received a collectible toy and doll catalog with Pipos Baha and Heero in it and I feel in love with their sweet faces and the poses they could do. I soon ordered both of them, for my sister and me.

    14. I first saw bjds in Shojo Beat lol I was so fascinated, I couldn't believe how beautiful they were.
So I went online, found Volks, and the first one I ever obsessed over was SDCB Ryu. :3
I always made that mistake of calling bjds "dollfies" because I didn't know any better lol :sweat
That was around... 7 years ago, I think.

Then I went to work in 2011 and met my sempai, who goes by "mana" on here.
She taught me all I know about bjds and then some :3
Heck, She's still teaching me stuff lol

Before that I had no idea what anything was, or even how to order them :doh

Then eventually, with my new found knowledge my mother bought me Eiruru (Angel of Dream Min)
in Spring 2012. I immediately fell in love with him, he just caught my eye :)

Now I'm planning on expanding my doll family and even making them a giant dollhouse :D
I'm super absorbed in this hobby and I love it!!! It's better than anything! >w<

    15. I was researching parts on cars and an image of a doll popped up in the search. I can't remember the sculpt or anything, I just remember thinking 'what the...?' and clicking on the link. The rest, as they say, is history.

    16. I went to japan on a year long exchange in 2011. My roommate at the time knew so much about japanese culture. At one point, they came up in discussion and she told me a bit about them. She was freaked out by them though, and didn't really know all that much. One time, we went to Mandarake, and there were some for sale there. I thought they looked beautiful! But being a poor uni student at the time, and having to make my funds last for my entire trip.... they were outrageously priced in my opinion, and I promptly forgot about ever owning one.

Coming back to Australia, I finished uni, went to conventions and made friends. One such friend is really into photography, and had two bjds. No longer a poor uni student (just a poor young person lol ^_^) I decided i could no longer deny how much I wanted one. And now the family just keeps growing.... ^_^'

    17. I discovered this hobby through an anime convention. Since about 2005 I have watched all these people and their beautiful dolls, then, last summer I finally bought one second hand from a friend of a friend. And she was a doll I never would have bought if I looked online. I couldn't be happier!

    18. I went to Anime Expo one year and someone had a Pocket Fairy May with her - that was the first BJD I had ever seen, and I fell in love instantly. She was just so tiny and cute! I asked her what the doll was, and she helpfully told me about BJDs and wrote down DoA's address for me to check out when I got home. And that was my intro to a long and expensive obsession with resin!

    19. Rozen Maiden! I was really into that show and I really wanted a Souseiseki doll which lead me to buy a Pullip. I collected them for a while (and ended up with a few more than planned) and at first I couldn't imagine buying a BJD because 1) I had yet to find one I really loved and 2) they seemed waaaay out of my price range. Then one day I thought "hey, so many people like both why don't I look into BJD's as well?" and I came across a few that I really liked and started my savings plan. I was about $50-ish away from affording my first doll when my birthday came around and my parents got me my first girl as a gift. So yeah, Rozen Maiden->Pullip->BJD:aheartbea

    20. I was browsing deviant art and I saw a picture of a doll. I was so mesmerized, and I kept coming back to study the picture day after day. After that I consider it a hobby of mine, but I am very new to the hobby still.
