1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. An anime convention. I didn't think another thought about them the first time I saw them. I also saw them on deviantArt now and then after that, but didn't look into it. A few years later, I decided to look more into them after seeing them at the convention again and then ended up ordering my first one a couple months later.

    2. On Super Dollfie Dreams. This was way back in the day before Aimee, Janie and Helene started Den of Angels.

    3. Good friend of mine showed me the first doll. It was one of minifee girls, I can't remember the name. It was cool, so I decided to buy my first doll. Now I have many dolls and love them)

    4. When I first signed up on DeviantART when I was 14 I saw a lot of photos of Volks dolls and other companies that were around that long ago. (we're talking not quite a decade ago) I fell in love with them because they were so beautiful and seemed to have no bad angle in the photographs. I looked, but never had the money because I was just a kid. Then someone introduced me to DoA and shortly after I had my first and got hooked.

    5. On VampireFreaks, I saw a profile with a picture of a gothic looking doll. The person also commented about them in his profile, I looked them up at the time thought BJDs to be far expensive but came back to them a couple of years later before buying my first.

    6. I think I saw my first BJD on DeviantArt while browsing the forums and thought that it was really interesting that you could just change out the eyes and wigs. I happened to walk by the single booth at DragonCon that sells ball joint dolls, and I bought my first one from them the next year at the same convention on a whim without having done any research. I thought it would make a great artist's muse, and it did! Fortunately I've gotten smarter about how to shop for them after a few years.

    7. I saw them on someone's blog and immediately fell in love with them.

    8. i saw them on deviantart and fell in love :D

    9. My friend was interested in them but I had no idea what they were. Our first encounter was with a group sitting in a corner playing with theirs at an anime con ( also our first time ) and a girl was nice enough to let me hold hers. I knew then that I had to have one! At the time all we knew was the term "Dollfie" which of course lead us to Volks. She liked them but I'm not fond of Volks ( or their prices xD ) it was a couple years before I discovered other BJD, eventually was invited and got two of my own. She still has none ( because she's SUPER picky and nothing is "good enough" ) but pouts because I got two without her and she doesn't understand where I got the "Extra money". Saving! It's slow yet rewarding.

    10. I saw BJDs when there were lots of DOD spam on my facebook wall. I never really became interested in them until I googled a reference picture for a japanese-inspired make-up and saw Iplehouse's Asa Tokyo Story. I immediately fell in love and has been lurking in the BJD community for months since then (I think that was november 2012)

And now after several months I finally got the guts to buy my own BJD :3 Asa, of course. hoho

    11. I started collecting fashion dolls and stumbled upon a BJD and was hooked. The rest is history. Lol

    12. Back in 2010 one of my favorite singers at the time, Kerli, came out with a music video called Tea Party, and at the end of the video all of her guests are turned into bjds. I thought they were so pretty, one thing led to another which led to MOC which brought me into the world of bjds and my huge love of them.

    13. I discovered them online about 5 years ago. Started seeing them popping up on the fashion doll boards and went to find out more about them. Honestly they did not appeal to me at first because most of the dolls I saw looked like little kids or cartoon characters. It wasn't until a lot of the more mature dolls started coming out that I got interested. Also, a lot of the doll makers started articulating my favorite fashion dolls. That got me wanting even more articulation and let's face it BJD's are as articulated as you can get.

The adult fashion oriented BJD's they got got me very interested but they were so expensive I didn't feel like I could go there. The prices on a lot of BJD's have dropped a lot recently compared to when I first started looking and reading about them. I never actually thought I'd have a pair of my own because I never thought I could get a resin doll for under $200. Even the vinyl ones (OT) I finally got were very pricey and resin just seemed to be out of my range completely.

But then I saw the Miro bodies one sale for like $55 and I realized I could. Now I've seen some inexpensive heads and I'm going to do it. I've got the bodies coming and I'm just trying to decide on which heads. I've got the female I think. At this point it's just the male head that's giving me grief. I'm having trouble finding a male head that I can afford that's old enough for my taste to go on that body.

I'm admittedly not like some of you on here though. I can't afford to buy dolls that equal several months rent, not even on lay-a-way. I totally covet a Lovely Luo, but I seriously doubt I will ever have one. Iple dolls they're just dreams for me. I can however afford this one 1/4 sized pair and I do mean to enjoy them. Only being able to afford two, they will be precious to me. They will likely be the most spoiled BJD's in history as a result, laugh.

    14. I didn't know about BJDs until a friend of mine told me about them. I'm a model builder who has built a lot of resin kits (everything from dinos to anime figures) and last year I began to consider finding some way to make some of my fictional characters look more real to take some pictures and such.

As a result of talking with my friend and looking at several of the BJD companies websites I got the idea that maybe a doll would work for what I wanted to do. I did some research, decided on which doll I wanted (that went surprisingly fast and I haven't regretted my choice) and then begun to sell some old items I had no use for, saved up and bought my first doll about a year ago ;).

I'm done with sanding, shading and painting his eyebrows and such but am still working on making wigs to suit the character. I find that me and my dolls get along real well and I'm very happy I decided to start with this hobby :).

    15. Let's just say that visiting japan did it's magic. Visiting Volks store especially. My friend bought his first doll that trip :3

    16. I saw a picture somewhere, when I was a teenager; probably on someone's blog.
And then, it only took a brief research to know where it came from, and what BJDs were.
I think the first doll company I found was probably Luts... And then, the prices scared me away for a few years :v

I also love Kerli! She's great xD
Doesn't Walking on Air also feature a BJD? Both videos are great!

    17. I was sitting in a classroom during lunch with two of my friends, and one of them was on DOD looking at dolls. My other buddy and I pestered her about what they were and which ones to look at. Two years later my first doll comes in the mail <3

    18. I'd heard about them some years ago but passed them off as "ugly" because I thought the ball joints ruined the aesthetics of what could otherwise be a beautiful doll. Then in December 2007 I purchased a magazine called Haute Doll and in there was a story of the DIM Minimee and it really introduced me to how versatile these dolls are and that you can personalize them in so many ways. It fascinated me and I was "IN!" It took me a few months to find my "perfect doll." But naturally it spiraled from there. I've recently downsized but still have 23 dolls and 3 floating heads.

    19. I saw the in person at the local and one of the away anime cons I went to a few years ago, each time I went and talked with the owners to find out about the dolls and where to get them. Its taken me years to finally commit to one, and shortly I'll have three X3

    20. I didn't know about BJDs untill around early 2012. My sister and I were in our last year of school and she had been online a lot. I didn't know what she was doing until one day she told me she bout a doll online. She would talk about it and talk about it, so much so that it got on my nerves lol. When Alice came in (My sister's first BJD) I kind of liked her but still thought that it was strange. But half a year ago I started to like them and now I have my very own dolls a DollnDoll Heart Zinnia "Nunnally, and a OnlyDoll ChiYao "Pepper."
