1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. first time I have heard about this hobby from a friend of mine and I didnt get in to it untill she actually showed me the doll. I had the doll in my arms, it was so heavy and it looked totally different from all the barbies i have had =)
Then another friend o mine, who was and still is a huge bjd fan and collector, she posted pics of her dolls and told me a lot about them. After long time thinking I finally got my first one =)

    2. A friend of mine who has a BJD began posting photos of him to LJ. So I became curious. I registered here a while back to learn more about BJDs but kind of lost interest... then life happened.
Now, having found Marina Bychkova's Enchanted Dolls, I'm very interested again... someday I'd like to make my own dolls, but I have a long way to go to get there.
So I'm just kind of here for research, to make friends and get to know the hobby. :)

    3. I knew a girl who would come to our monthly anime Meetups locally every once in a while with her doll (which I believe was a VOLKS doll) and she was so persnicketty about people touching her or anything. I actually thought they were really creepy at first so I really paid no mind... but then my roommate ended up getting one and I slowly fell in love with it. The concept of it and everything, So not long after I bought my first doll :)

    4. I found out about the hobby because of BlueRoseArkelle on youtube. I watched her videos for her art, but then one day in one of her videos she pointed the camera at the most adorable looking thing I'd ever seen! (Her first BJD, Shu, a Crobidoll Camille boy) and I was smitten! I wondered what on earth these 'BJD' things were, so I did a little research, watched a few videos, googled a few things, and knew immediately that I needed one. Aaand about a year-and-a-half of endlessly scrolling through the BJD tag on tumblr and checking out new sculpts from various companies I'd come to love (and yearning for every single sculpt they have) I finally ordered my very first doll! I'm so exited to get him home I can't even contain myself!!

    5. Hahaha mine is really weird. Whenever I read manga online, on the translator's page they would have pictures of BJDs on it. At first I didn't know what they were, and then I was playing an otome game called Nameless where the boys were all Crobidolls. I looked them up and fell in love with them immediately, but the price punched me in the gut. Then months later, I forced myself to start saving up.

Here is the game that changed my life (It is in English) THANK YOU NAMELESS!!!:aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea

    6. I was walking past a shop in the city and there was a bjd in a shop window, later that day I looked them up on ebay and eventually found my way here~

    7. It was many years ago, my close friend sent me a photo's link which is BJD from DOD to help me get some inspiration for writing my novels. And that was the beginning of my BJD hobby, even though at time I hadn't owned any doll yet until last year. :)

    8. I first found out through DeviantArt. (Like most cases) I was searching through model photos for inspiration, when I saw a picture that caught my eye. The model looks very real to me, but upon closer inspection, I found out that either it was photo shopped, or it was a doll. Turns out it was the latter, then I started looking around for dolls similar to it. I scanned websites, shops, and asked questions. That's when I found out about BJDs. I fell in love with their posing abilities and their customization perks. :)

    9. I'm not sure any more... I know i found it about seven years ago, but the earliest solid bjd memory traces back to using the DOD priest outfits to illustrate a school uniform in a magic RPG. Beyond that, i don't actually know, how I found them. I do remember seen an Otto Dix - Glenofobia video on youtube that BJD's in it, but I'm pretty sure the actual video came out after I found out about them.

    10. I was subscribed to the manga magazine Shojo Beat, where I first saw a short article on BJDs. I'm an artistic person, and was intrigued by their eerie beauty. Of course, at this time I was just a young teen without the funds for such an expensive hobby, so I put it from my mind.Flash forward to college, where I met a few other artsy friends, one of whom was a BJD enthusiast herself and had a few dolls to show me. More recently, this same friend was kind enough to send me an invitation to this site. I look forward to learning more and expanding my sparse knowledge of this hobby, and applying it to the dolls in my possession. Myparents got me a Hujoo Nano Freya for Christmas, and I highly anticipate the arrival of my first adult-proportioned resin doll. :>

    11. I was going thru videos on youtube and found nicole dreams doing face ups. So I put in the search engine bjds and all these photos, dolls, companies popped up and I feel in love.

    12. Aaa... Uncle Google told me.

    13. When I was grade 6, i must do my presentation, so i google: "Beautiful scenery" and google gave me a poster of DOD :)))It's about 4 years from that time, and I already got my first BJD XD

    14. I was serching for photos of "beautiful dolls" and Google gave me a link to an album of bjd-pictures. The first one I saw was DOD Black Ducan. It happened in 2007. I was not upset I can't buy a doll right at the moment. I was searching for more information what these bjds are to consider whether it's my hobby or not. I got an opportunity to buy a doll in 2009 and it didn't seem a long waiting at that time) But now I'm more impatient)))

    15. I had seen a photo in a doll magazine back around 2008 of the "ball-jointed dolls from Asia." I thought they were amazing but had no idea how to get hold of one - plus, the idea of having to buy a wig and eyes and paint the faces was intimidating at the time.

Fast forward about five years and I had just finished my little OT travel doll and started blogging about her. While browsing some other doll blogs online, I came upon a link to one that featured a group of small BJDs. I was enchanted. I became friends with the girl who wrote it online and, about a year later, when she downsized her group, the doll I adored the most came to live here with me. :) She has a lot of resin company now, but she was my first.

    16. It was kind of silly for me. I was in the craft store and saw a magazine with these gorgeous dolls on the cover and had to know what they were. I flipped through the pages and they were talking about casting and making your own dolls. I love to make things myself and so decided that hey making dolls sounds like fun! They are what? Made of clay fired in a kiln or something right?

Went home did the research decided I was NOT making one. Ever. But I did really want one. So off I went to explore all the sites. Got the big names (Volks, Luts, Soom) and from there kept wandering further and further down the rabbit hole till I crashed into my Grigoriy and brought him home.

The funny thing was that as soon as I mentioned these dolls to my friends they all seemed to know what they were. I felt like I was living in some sort of vortex where dolly information kept flying over my head. Someone directed me here to DoA and now I feel very silly for not knowing these things existed.

    17. Once upon a time I saw nice bjd picture and I decided to get it. It was love from the first sight.

    18. I discovered the BJD hobby back in about 2003 or 2004 with a friend going by the handle of Jibrille/Jibby. I thought they were beautiful but way out of my league. Aaaages later and I get to see my very first thanks to Sharsannon and Adarhysenthe. I started entertaining the idea in the back of my braine of maybe possibly getting one. Then my tax refund came and I used it to buy a modest JID boy who I'm still waiting for but anticipate getting by before my birthday in June. XD

    19. I was in a non-bjd tag on tumblr and saw a picture of one with the non-bjd dolls. It was tagged bjd but I didn't follow through until sometime last year and I've been looking at them ever since. :)

    20. honestly, by chance, because I was looking for clothes for my dolls blythe and found photos of a Pukifee Ante, which as you know already was a crush, and started to investigate youtobe, forums and blogs .... and till now
