How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. I discovered BJD, because a friend had a Pullip Nina in her profile picture and I searched "doll pullip" with google. I found pictures of Bjd and fell in love. :love

    2. I was doing RP on Tumblr, and someone wanted to make one of the characters in the fandom into a BJD and they were asking to help them decide which one out of the two they showed, so they published official pictures with the links on them, and I went to see what they were about. So one of the tags was BJD, and I checked that too, and well, yeah... :)

    3. About two years ago I had a room mate bring an internet friend home to stay for a week, and the girl collected Monster High Dolls, which I thought were terribly cute and I bought a couple. Well then she showed me some BJDs online, with no real income she said she couldn't afford them but always wanted one. I've done off and on research since then, but because of expense and roommates coming and going it wasn't really an option. Until this year, I'm proud to say that I've ordered and am waiting on a minifee Celine who will be by first doll!:dance

    4. I first found out about them at an anime convention

    5. Hi :3
It was 2007 were I stumbled over a picture someone made on Animexx. And this picture of that doll was so breath taking, I googled BJDs and found D.O.D.s Shall. At that time I was still in school, but I could have had the money for Shall, if I didn't thought, that this money can be useful in a difficult situation. So I looked her up a whole week and then put her in a box far away in a dark corner of my brain, so I won't have a chance to buy her. Years later my best friend talked about them and I thought: "Man, she really wants to spend a lot of money on one doll?!" We searched through the web, for fun and then I saw my long lost love, Shall and BAM three days later I ordered Elf Jamong by Luts, because I couldn't resist anymore. Then they released Minifee 'Queen of Hearts' Mio and while I fell in love with Mio, I found more and more. Now I have 2 dolls and aaa looootttt of rolling heads. And they all will get a body :wiggle:lol:!!! I'm so incredible happy to be an adult and that I can work overtime for more money! Because of this, I can buy everything I ever wanted as a kid, without feeling guilty to maybe have spend too much money on something!!!

    6. My journey into BJD is a round about one. I first off discovered blythe doll. I bought a bag whilst on holiday which had pictures of blythe dolls on, I feel in love with them via my bag and had to look them up and buy one. Then from there I met some lovely people who brough a few little different dolls to meets. So I fell for those too, and after I bought my first 2 blythes I bought my first BJD. My little Lati yellow leah is my first BJD, and has been with me almost 4 years now. and thats where I left my BJD collection..... for 3 years any way. I contunued to collect my blythes and other dolls, then for my birthday my boyfriend bought me a Hujoo Lily in ABS plastic, and she aparked something, I now have a Resinsoul Ya on her way and I am saving up for Minifee Celine and Iplehouse Tania. :)

    7. I was into anime a long time ago, and saw Dollfie Dreams! I liked them for awhile but didn't have enough to actually buy one. Years past then I found them again. I researched a lot and discovered the more realistic bjds, and it was love at first sight :love

    8. I dont remember what I was looking up, but at the age of twelve, I discovered elfdoll somehow.
All I remember is google then BAM! Doll.

    9. I was on ebay looking for Barbie clothes for my daughter's dolls and all these other dolls were popping up, Blythe, Momoko, Azone, Obitsu etc., so I started using those as search terms because their clothes looked nicer than the Barbie stuff and BJD were mixed in the results, also. I got an Obitsu and a couple Pullips before getting into the resin dolls, though.

    10. I saw by pure chance Marina Bychkova's webside and saw her porcelain dolls and found them incredibly beautiful. That was my first encounter with BJDs. It was several months later that I saw them again and began to look for definition and a community about BJDs, and fell in love with my first doll-to-be.

    11. I was looking for dolls to people my dollhouses and came across Pukipuki's. They are so cute I had to have one....or two.....or three LOL

    12. I've been comfortable with dolls all my life- when I was a little tyke I even preferred playing with my elder sister's Barbies instead of my G.I. Joe action figure. (I was a strange child.) I didn't develop any particular affection or care for bjds in particular until my freshman year of high school? I believe it was. I really got into the anime Rozen Maiden and thought it would be really cool to make my own, but I at the time assumed it would've been way too expensive and it kinda drifted to the background of my mind.

Fast forward several years to sometime in late 2014 I learned of Volks*. Curious about them after hearing about those other dolls with the chip in them (I forget the name) I decided to look at their SD line...and promptly closed the window shouting obscenities and stuff like "rip-off artists!" Even so, I knew I was hooked and hated myself for every minute of it . I have a lot of costly hobbies, last thing I needed was another one. So I decided to do the smart thing and do as much research as I could possibly find, and as I grew to understand WHY they cost so much I calmed down and accepted it for what it was- something I'd enjoy and end up spending a lot of money on. I looked around and saw not all dolls cost 500+ and that they come in all different shapes and sizes- and got quite the surprise when I saw some of the er...fantasy sculps? Mermaids, centaurs, elves, whatever that odd long thing that reminds me of a worm...I dunno what was going on with that one.

Right now I'm saving up for an Obitsu, but I really can't wait to find a stringed doll that I can enjoy and call my own. Well, a second one. I had bought a cheap (off-topic) doll on ebay to get my feet wet so to speak for an amazing deal- I'm talking $18.50 (bid wars ftw!) here- I was thoroughly convinced the odds it was a recast were like 95%- (it's not, thankfully). Having a ball jointed doll in my hands that I could play with and pose solidified my desire for a larger doll.

tl;dr, I blame anime and the internet.

*I finally remember where I heard of (off topic company) and Volks and I definitely blame the internet, I was reading /v/'s "So You Want To Be A Buy***" guide and section j. mentions asian ball jointed dolls. they bolded the word "customization" and I was all over those links they provided. I read the guide for GKs and ended up walking way wanting some of these dolls. Life is strange but fun like that.

    13. This is going to sound weird, but ...

      The MLP Arena forum. :P

    14. Start on a forum include bjd, and then just keep looking at it. Even computer lab in school I kept watching bjd companies page!
      Internet your drugs.......*_*

    15. No idea. But it was years ago, I think I came across dollmore somehow and it all took off from there.

    16. I'd found a random DOD company photo, while looking for some manga and anime related fanarts (google never ceases to amaze me). Because I was charmed by that doll, I've started to looking for more. And here I am^^

    17. I've always liked miniature things as a kid and so it was natural that I would get into dolls. I saw BJDs in Deviantart as part of the all-time favorites at one point and I found them really cool, but had no interest to buy one. A few years later, I stumbled on this Tumblr post with a BJD making another BJD and I was in awe about how detailed it looked and I wanted to see if I can do something like that, but forgot all about it. That is until a few months later, a friend wanted to sell her BJD on Facebook. After seeing the ridiculous price she set it at, I got curious and decided to do research. Later, I found myself joining the local BJD community forum and before I knew it, I now find myself purchasing and waiting for my first BJD.

    18. I have been interested in Lolita fashion for a decade now. In the course of tons of research about the fashion in order to get started I came across Lolita style clothes for Ball-Jointed-Dolls! I additionally found Lolita's that had and would twin with their dolls! How adorable! A long time fan of dolls in general, I admit I was intrigued. I was able to make an acquaintance who gave me some information about the BJD hobby, for which I am still extremely thankful for.

The price at the time however put me off of the hobby. I decided that, only after I was able to start building a Lolita wardrobe, would I entertain the idea of getting my own doll. I am now looking into getting my first BJD!

    19. I think I first saw a bjd at a cosplay event, long long time ago. I wasn't too sure what they were, and I didn't know why they had to put up a sign saying "No Flash Photography Please!" at that time!! But I sure fell in love with the beauty of those dolls. And I went home to mr google, and I searched for beautiful dolls hahahaha.

    20. I must have been looking for something on the web 3 or 4 years ago and stumbled across images of some random bjd. I did not know anything about the dolls or anybody who had them, the prices seemed oddly high and also the size of the dolls made me wonder who on the earth would want to have these giant things at home... Turned out a lot of people do and I am waiting for my first doll to arrive now too
