1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. How did you discover the BJD hobby?

Apr 8, 2011

    1. I blame this obsession on ChibiJaime! She discovered them first and had been showing the sites to me. At first I was casually interested at most, but did not have the interest in putting out that much money. After she purchased Sakio (soul doll Clara) and showed her to me face to face I really started to appreciate the beauty of these dolls, not to mention the artistic possibilities, I love to make things for them. I purchased the Volks dollfie kit doll she'd gotten from a local convention from her at first and within a year had made my purchase of my first actual BJD. Since then I've allowed myself one doll per year (since I tend to fall for the little ones this is usually cost effective as well). This year she brought me a surprise in the form of a head thus encouraging the next step toward larger dolls, and learning to do faceups.

    2. I was interested in a doll called Hitty at the time I discovered bjds. A few people posted pics of their dolls with links to flickr and from following links to links to links....another obsession was born! I have sizes from msd to tinies, have to say though that Fairyland has recently captured my heart (and wallet)

      Barb.

    3. Mm, it's true that when you see them in person it is a lot more convincing than looking at them off promo pictures and even user-submitted pictures D: I got to see two dolls owned by a senior at my High School and it pushed me a little closer to deciding : D

    4. Completely and totally by accident! I was actually researching costume information for the outfits worn in "Curse of the Golden Flower" movie a couple years ago. I noticed most of my image searches kept bringing up beautiful dolls wearing similar costumes to the ones on the movie; and before I know it I was looking more at them than the clothes. Lets just say that once I found out what they were and I typed "ball jointed doll" into the search engine...... that was it! :sweat

I became obsessed in finding out more about them (they were so pretty and the outfits your could make/buy for them were amazing!!!), and the more I found and realized what I could possible do with them, the more I wanted one! After that, I have my younger sister and my now good friend Erin to blame for being enablers and helping me get my first doll! That will be one year ago from this June, and I've ordered my second at the end of 2010, and am already saving up for my third and (hopefully) final doll this summer! It has definitely been a whirl-wind adventure in BJDs, and I'm still somewhat new to it all:? But I'm loving it!!:)

    5. Heh, I guess there's always more to discover ^^

    6. I sure do, sorry I didnt see your post until now :P

My girls aren't the best examples, since the really nice ones are too pricy.
Lately Ive been focusing more on ABJD's, since they're a lot less fragile:sweat

    7. discovered it through internet..I was browsing something (forgot what is it) and stumbled upon the site of DOD and I was, wow they're gorgeous.. must have..:D

    8. Heh, was your first doll a DoD doll?

    9. When I first joined Etsy, I searched for other fellow doll artists and found Sleeping Elf (TinyBear). I was really fascinated by Moona and would periodically check into her shop to look at her dolls. I eventually ended up buying a Thistledown human from her as a birthday present to myself and I fell in love with BJDs.

    10. I blame it all on flickr ;)

    11. The earliest sight of a ABJD for me was on the stationaries. I was in boarding school back then. The only entertainment would be finding all sorts of funky stationaries at the corner shop near school. I could still remember they had all the Japanese animate characters on pens, notebooks and almost everything, including pictures of ABJDS. The girls at the shop told me it was some dolls from Korea and Japan, and she call them "SD dolls". Last year when I searched for a suitable Xmas gifts for my twin nieces I thought of those "SD dolls" and googled it, I know that they are actually ball jointed dolls and SD dolls is only a part of it. Of course I didn't buy them for my 10 year old nieces (they are way too young for such expensive things), but I fell in love with them after getting to know more about them.

    12. golgy_body Oh wow this is an interesting story o:

    13. The first time I ever saw a BJD was in a train. It was 2005 and I was sitting in the train and a little girl with her mother, was sitting next to me. The girl (12-14) had a beautiful doll in her lap. It was so beautiful that I just had to ask about it (and I am a very shy person I don´t just start talking to people in trains). The girl told me that the doll is an Asian ball jointed doll, and they are very expensive and you can only get them from Japan. I was a bit off taken by her comment, I mean she wasn´t exactly being polite, so I just thanked her and carried on with my own business.

For a while I tried searching these dolls from the internet, but since I didn´t remember the name of the dolls anymore I couldn´t find anything. For sometime I just forgot about them and just dreamed that maybe, one day I might have one. Then I cam a cross a doll called Ellowyne Wilde and I just had to buy her. I thought that this was maybe something like that BJD doll that I saw, which ofcourse it wasn´t. So few months ago, I was searching pictures of Tonner dolls and there it was, a perfet little doll called Riz (from Planetdoll) and I knew I have to have her. First the price shocked me and I thought I must me mad to want her. But alas, I did buy her :)

Meanwhile I was waiting for buying my Riz I found one beautiful doll from a Finnish page where you can sell anything you want. This doll was Dollmores Lilis Liv. The cost was higher then the cost of Riz, but I just had to have her. And there she is, sitting on my shelf :D And I love her so much. I can´t believe that a person can really have such love towards an object. She is having her face-up done at the moment, and I just can´t wait to get her back :D

But this was my story, of how I found these dolls, already years ago. Finally I have one at home and it is just as beautiful as I imagined :)

    14. Okay first off, thank you for sharing ^^ It's long and interesting story to read O: ! The beginning was especially interesting haha, the whole little girl with a doll on the train scene is kinda romantic <3

And second off, are you possibly talking about huuto.net? haha : )

    15. At a convention a long time ago, I saw a girl who had a doll, who was dressed up as Edward Elric from FMA. He was so adorable, so I asked the girl what it was, then google became my best friend as I began an endless search for a doll~ <3

    16. Watching the film the Doll Master my jaw dropped when I saw all the bjd's!!! Still makes my eyes water with the hope of having a full room of them!

    17. Okay that's it, I'm downloading it.

    18. One word, internet.

I was looking at gothic lolita outfits; found candy violet, looked through the website and discovered bjds. XD About a year later, I went to HK w/ my family and saw my first bjd w/c I, somewhat regrettably didn't buy. >.>

    19. Deviantart was how I discovered the hobby. I saw a couple different users with BJD's, and since then I've been hooked.

    20. I wonder how many votes Deviant will get if I post a poll.
