1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How did you purchase your first BJD?

Nov 10, 2013

    1. I also bought my first doll with my tax return, and I got one that was in stock at Denver Doll Emporium because I am impatient. :XD:

    2. Layaway although I like to pay back early. I'll be finishing the payments at the end of this month :)

    3. I really enjoyed reading through this thread. Kudos to all those that saved up. That's so hard to do.

I'm still waiting for my first one. I'm adult with a decent paying job (no way could I have afforded the hobby in my 20's), but still, bjd are a lot of money that I should put towards other things. I was planning on using my refund, but when I found out how long it could take to get the doll, I chose layaway though Mint on Card for Angell Studio Victoria full set. I'll pay her off when she comes in, but I don't like idea of paying so much and then waiting so long for something. I had looked at bjd for quite a while, but never checked out after filling my card at many different websites. I knew, though, that she was the one I was meant to get. No hesitation. Sadly, I'd originally been looking as Dollzone Rosemary, and then Vita, and ended up getting them on layaway too. It was a slippery slope and layaway made it so easy. I'd been looking Rosemary for months, but hesitated at spending nearly $400. Somehow, though, I didn't hesitate to spend more than twice that on Victoria. That's how I knew she was the one. The price seemed totally reasonable. I consider her my first since she the first I ordered, but I'm not sure if she'll be the first I receive. I hope so. Somehow she's already special to me.

Oh, and I have since ordered other bjd related items, and I'm paying for them by not eating out and eating oatmeal or eggs for most of my meals these days. These things are so addicting...

    4. I purchased my first doll through DDE and she was in stock. I don't remember what form of payment I used (either PP or CC) but I paid in full at the time of purchase and it was definitely a splurge.

    5. I saved up for mine and paid them off all at once. Ragrettably, I went through a distributor, and didn't realize until much later that I overpaid and was forced to wait way too long when I could have ordered direct. Ha ha. Oh well!

    6. I didn't save, I just saw that boy Giyom by Supia doll, and was all like,
DO WANT HIM, NOW !!!11 :o
Instead of ordering him immediately though, I had to figure out the payment method first, I messaged on Supia board, then waited for the reply, and then my boyfriend made me make my own paypal account rather than using his. When it was done, I paid in full right off. But! It was stated on Supia site that the process of the doll creation may take up to 3 month, and I got my boy after just a 1 month of waiting :] Awww, my very first doll made me so very happy <33333
If I had to save or cut down on anything, I would have surely saved and definitely cut down, because this boy is phantastic, he is worth every dollar spent.

    7. I was planning on saving for my first doll, but then I discovered the joys of company events and put her on the credit card to not miss out on that. :sweat
Since then it has been layaway or saving up/selling things to get the money for them. I <3 layaway, and even more so now that there are so many US dealers that will do layaways with some of my favorite companies. :)

    8. Actually, around the time I got my first doll I had recently gotten an inheritance, which while not enough to make me rich, was significant, so I just went ahead and bought him! It was my only splurge from that money, the rest went to tuition and later as part of a down payment on my house. The rest of my dolls I've saved for slowly, over time.

    9. I used my very first paycheck from the very first job :) thankfully I had enough to her in one go!

    10. I saved for a good while and paid off my boy in one go, even though I nearly had a conniption doing it! If I ever get more dolls (which let's face it, is likely) I'd have a strict policy of having the full amount on hand FIRST. Once I get into layaways or whatnot that's just a slippery slope I'm not willing to slide down. Same reason why I never want a credit card and am sticking to my debit card for as long as I can.

    11. I saved up with the good intention of using that money for my first BJD. But life is unpredictable and I ended up purchasing my first BJD with the credit card.

    12. I used money that I had saved, although I wasn't thinking of buying a doll at the time I was saving. I do layaways not because I don't have the money, but because it actually saves me money as I won't buy anything else when something is on layaway. It just reminds me to space things out.

    13. I ordered my minifee directly from fairyland by debit card. I had half saved from selling on ebay and saving and the other half came from my tax refund.

    14. I've taken a second job to pay layaway rates :)

    15. My first doll was purchased through E-bay from a user who was also active here on DoA. She quit the hobby and listed her dolls for sale on both E-bay and here. I still don't know why I chose my Littlefee Leah over the Littlefee Ante she had for sale. Ante is the sculpt I absolutely adore, back then and now still. Yet I chose Leah and I don't regret it at all. She has the cutest little face and button nose. Ante will still be a part of my family in the future but not sure if it will be in Littlefee form.

I bought her from the money I saved up from working full-time. I still had to save about a year before I had enough, now it's even harder since I also have a loan running on something 'more important' than a doll. Someday however I'm pretty sure I'll purchase another doll.

    16. Im looking for my first doll to buy. Considering layaway if i dont need to then ill just pay for the whole thing.

    17. I saved up money and bought my first doll off Alice Collection with layaway. Bought all her clothing secondhand and off taobao and ebay.

    18. I was a student back then and made some extra cash from selling custom clothes for Pullips :)
After saving up for almost half a year, I purchased my first BJD from the second hand market.

    19. I spent weeks of looking at all the websites, shops, forums, and reviews, before buying my first doll. And I thought good and hard about it too. During this time, I was putting money aside. When I had the money and was comfortable with my decision of who to buy, I bought her from the manufacturer.

    20. I got my first BJD on EBay, a Littlefee Rolly........now I have 15 LTF's!
