1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How did you purchase your first BJD?

Nov 10, 2013

    1. Sold items from an old hobby of mine to afford this new one! From one addiction to another ;P

    2. No layaways in 2004... no credit cards (although that was coming soon), not even international Paypal! (I had to bank wire-transfer money.)

I just saved up. No other choice, really.

    3. Layaway also wasn't an option for me. Iplehouse didn't do layaway back in 2005. Thankfully they did accept credit cards so once I had enough money, I used my mom's credit card and paid her back in cash. I was only 16 so I didn't have my own credit card yet...

    4. They're so expensive, I never thought I'd get one. Then I got a really amazing job with good pay. I didn't save up before buying a doll, but my bank offered me a credit card with 0% interest for a year and and $8k limit. XD So I asked my wife if she'd like to get dolls finally, since we'd both been interested in them, and I charged them to my first credit card. Since then I've been able to buy a few dolls without charging but overall that card has been a nightmare for me and I probably would have been better off never having one. lol

    5. I saved up enough money to pay for her in full. I only had a summer job at the time (I was going to college), so I didn't want to risk not being able to pay off credit card debt later.

    6. I bout my first second hand, and I saved up for her sorta. My second doll who I got from DDE I got on Layaway, which I think is a great option if you cannot afford to pay for the doll all in one go ^^

    7. I got my first BJD at the end of 2006 from Japan yahoo auction. She is DD-白河さやか. At that time, I was a student and saved money desperately. Some times I did not eat lunch... This situation continued for about half year *_*

    8. This period I was really crazy, no lunch, no shopping, selling some toys.... Until now, I never regret to get my first doll, she is really petty & beautiful doll. I love her very much. :)

    9. I saved up for a very long time. I was 16 and the only money I got was from doing a small paper round. I must've been saving for about a year. I also used money that I got from relatives at Christmas and my birthday. And sometimes I was really naughty and skipped lunch at school so that I could keep the lunch money my mum gave me (if I did this every day I could double my income for the week, but shhh don't tell my mother!)

Yeah, I really don't know how I saved so much. I must have really, really wanted it because I'm pretty rubbish at saving nowadays xD

    10. I used to have savings......:doh

    11. I had saved up for maybe a little over two years, plus I sold a LOT of my old American Girl Doll stuff, PLUS I ended up using a large portion of my life savings! (which was about $600, since I was almost 13 when I bought my first doll...) I was planning on buying a doll directly from the company (migidoll Ryu head + unknown body at the time) but I didn't have paypal or a credit card, so basically I was allowed to use my mom's paypal for the transaction with her help and she would transfer the money out of my bank account. Of course, that's not quite how it went down. I ended up falling in love with a secondhand doll on eBay (Elfdoll Soah) while at my grandma's house and so after asking my mom and grandma, I used my grandma's eBay account to buy her, and my mom sent my money to my grandma shortly after. Because of this, the doll was shipped to my grandma instead of directly to me, but she was happy to deliver the box to me and watch me open my first doll, as she was (is) a doll enthusiast as well, though only with fashion dolls at the time. (Now she has two BJDs, one I helped her buy and one that I gave her as a gift.) It was pretty great. Since then, I have mostly paid for dolls using my mom's paypal (as I am still a minor, guh) or with cash at doll shows.

    12. I had a credit card sitting around doing nothing, I used it to buy my first doll direct from fairyland. As soon as I had paid off enough of it I then ordered more, now I have four dolls and a larger credit limit. I just have to pay it all off again before I add anymore ladies to my collection. If it wasn't for my credit card I couldn't have started this hobby, am terrible at saving money.

    13. I was 13 when I got my very first doll so I couldn't pay for it myself yet, so instead my mum paid for the doll and I had to pay her back. But before that I'd been saving for a really long time and giving all my money to my mum was kind of painful, haha.

    14. I had enough to pay in full, so I found one that I liked and bought her.
After her, I've just been saving. I don't start actively looking for a new family member until I know I have enough saved up to probably either pay in full, or do a short layaway. I've never put a doll on a credit card, I prefer to pay all at once when possible. c:

    15. I had to save up about $100 before I bought my first doll. I already had quite a bit saved up before I even got into the hobby.

    16. Avalon my RS MSD was my birthday present from my mom for my seventeenth birthday...He means even more knowing that it was all her who paid for him...My father spent unknowingly to me over ten thousand dollars and didn't give a darn that my birthday nearly was ruined...Avalon was my only birthday present along with a couple of small things excluding the sewing machine my uncle bought me. Avalon means the world to me because of this..I got him on the DOA marketplace on layaway. My second RS doll a Yo-SD is my Christmas present this year from my mother.

    17. I have yet to officially buy my own.....my MIL has given my four but I just sold one to pay for part of a new doll.....I feel like a spoiled brat lol

    18. I cheated & bought my first doll with a credit card from Dolls & Friends, who had her in stock. They were a great store & I miss them greatly.

    19. I bought my first doll from FairyLand's authorized dealer Denver Doll Emporium.
She was in stock and I happened to have more money to spend than usual so I bought her.
I also had eyed her for couple of days so I was glad she was still in stock.
I knew I wanted my first doll to be FairyLand doll so I was happy I didn't need to wait long to get her. xD

    20. I just bought her in full on ebay from Dollmore's ebay agent at the time. I didn't really save for her, just used part of my paycheck through Paypal.
