1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

How did you purchase your first BJD?

Nov 10, 2013

    1. I just bought him off eBay and paid via Paypal. I have a good job so I had enough funds.

But, I had never ever imagined paying more than a hundred dollars for a DOLL before.... it was 2005, I'd never seen anything like these dolls before, and had a hard time imagining myself as an owner... so I did go through mental gymnastics to get there! So, for my first doll, I picked a 45cm SD Cute, instead of the big SD13 LE doll I was really gunning for, to get my feet wet paying hundreds of dollars for a toy (before venturing into paying more than a thousand).

And it went so smoothly that afterwards I dove right into chasing down those rare SD13 fullsets and dropping 4 figures on them. It was almost disturbingly easy to go from getting one's feet wet, directly to wading in hot lava.

(But I still have that first little doll. He's in charge around here!)

    2. Second hand here on the MP. :)
      Paid via paypal.
Ryo was just a head at first, then brought him a body later.
I still have my first doll, he's my for life resin-companion.

    3. From the company, used Paypal. Did not realize that it would be FOREVER (well, it felt like forever) before she would arrive.

    4. I bought a second hand Jodie on ebay. Since he wasn't all that expensive anyway I got him right away. All my others now... Different story.

    5. My first doll was a birthday gift to myself and bought with my credit card. The rest since have been a combination of brand-new and second hand (at this point, it's about 50/50) but all except one were bought outright. I've only done layaway once, and that was only because the person lived in my city.

    6. My first doll was a pre-order from MintonCard as I didn't know how to buy dolls back then (last year). It was a 21st birthday present from my dad and I used a prepaid visa card. My recent doll was a layaway, and that was done with DenverDoll. That was easily done through paypal.

    7. I bought my first doll from my first paycheck of my first summer job. Wow that almost sounded romantic :sweat Fun fact: I found the perfect doll I wanted to buy right before I started to work. So I knew immediately what my first purchase would be.

    8. I saved. I managed to get most of the money I needed, and then went on ahead and started layaway payments, simply because I wanted to cement my order. As for how I made the payments, I used my credit card via Paypal.

    9. I've slowly been paying for my first doll in payments to the owner through Paypal since she is secondhand. The wait is awful since I only get paid every two weeks, but I'm almost there! I wish I could use my credit card lol

    10. eBay! A Lati White Sp. Belle with certificate, clothing, hair, and eyes. I had seen a lot of my Flickr friends with Latis and was so intrigued, I didn't know where else to find these dolls so I decided to casually browse eBay in hopes of finding Lati. Almost instantly, little Belle tugged at my heartstrings and I bought her right then. I had zero intention of adopting a BJD before I saw her listing. :aheartbea I used funds from selling off my massive army of dolls-that-aren't-relevant-to-this-forum and had money just sitting in my PayPal.

    11. The first I get was paid by my father on the Volks Website. The first I paid by myself was a secondhand I bought from a figure.fm seller with a supra layaway xD.

    12. I've ordered my first doll through a dealer from Europe. I used my student loans... Maybe not the smartest way to go about things, but I'm pretty impatient.

    13. I was actually supposed to order from Luts, for the summer event. I was going to get Berry after I got back from A-kon, and I had everything in my cart ready to buy. On the first day of A-kon, I popped into Dollakon to see what was what, and after taking their little faceup class I went next door to look at what they had for sale. I saw a beautiful doll lying in a box and had to have her, and after running around trying to find the friend who had my wallet, I ran back and purchased her from Mint on Card right then and there. I actually sucked two of my other friends into the hobby a bit and now one of them is very interested in dolls and would have loved to get one if she had the money.
I was saving up money to move into an apartment, but my plans have changed so now I can afford to spoil her, and once I get my market place access I hope I can find some cool stuff for her :D

    14. I saved up a bit, and then actually went right to the store.
I live in Beijing so I was able to take out the yuan from the bank and pay for my doll in cash and have her that day. I was very lucky to be able to bring her home after paying for her considering they had exactly what I wanted in stock. Before I leave Beijing I will probably buy another one, but I'll have to order him since he will be tanned.

    15. I asked my partner to buy me the first one as a Christmas gift. The rest I have paid with a credit card, as I'm terrible at saving money but good at paying off debts :sweat

    16. For my Tiny Delf I saved up and used Paypal to get her directly from LUTS :) my other two girls I adopted from sales on the Chinese BJD forum!

    17. I saved up for my girl and paid in full via paypal, but it took me quite a while to save up for her. I'm studying at the moment so I literally had to save any spare change/cash I had. :sweat
I changed up all the coins I had in my house. I also made jewellery to sell, and saved up any money I got for my birthday/Christmas.

    18. I got my first bjd as a gift :) Actually, the second one was kind of a gift, too. We ended up returning a telescope that I got as a Christmas present (because it didn't magnify worth beans, dash it all!) and spent the money from that on a new doll :P

    19. I went to my local BJD dealer, and asked if they had any dolls that had minor flaws, such as cracks, yellowing of the resin etc. and they had a small selection. Since I did not have all of the money at that time, they let my do layaway.

    20. I got a credit card just to purchase a doll from Mint on Card (ok, I wanted a credit card for a long time but now I had a real reason)
I'm currently paying my layaway and no, I didn't save, I use the spare money I have from my job when I paid my rent and invoices.
